DELHI (Metro Rail News): Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways of India, informs that 1,340 railway stations across India are in the phase of redevelopment to meet the future demands after 50 years. Lately, 400 stations have already witnessed the change in its platforms. The project aligns with the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) that targets to revamp the stations to make it equally accessible for all by incorporating modern facilities.
However, he acknowledged the fact of how difficult it is to carry out redevelopment work across railways stations when the majority of the Indian population rely on railways for transport to ANI today. While accepting the heavy dependence on railways, he said that services across the country will not come to a halt. In other foreign countries, where the railway services come to a standstill when the construction work is progressing, the same cannot be undertaken in India whatsoever.
Necessary arrangements will be made so that the redevelopment of stations continues while serving the passengers. Safety of the people will be the main priority while the stations undergo a transition phase.
Amrit Bharat Station Scheme promotes regional architecture
The railway stations across India are witnessing the heavy construction work to expand their capacity to accommodate the growing population and reflect the local architectural culture of its residence. While speaking to ANI, the Railway Minister made it clear how the stations would reflect the famous local building designs in its architecture. To clarify accurately, he mentioned that Jaipur would reflect the local architectural style that is in the tradition of the Pink City for years. Similarly, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad would reflect the architectural style that has been in their norms since ages.

The ongoing development is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) that was introduced by the Ministry of Railways in December 2022 to redevelop the railway stations into modern city centres. Being one of the largest station-modernisation projects, it involves improving facilities to make the railways accessible for people with restricted mobility (PRM) along with other steps to make it more passenger-friendly. The steps to improve railway stations include:
- Upgraded station buildings and waiting halls
- Better circulating and parking areas
- Wider foot-over-bridges (FOB) and air concourses
- modern signage and passenger-information systems
Reflection of the city’s architectural artists and the origins of structural styles across the foundation and supporting pillars of railway stations would serve as a great step towards accepting the local culture proudly. Railway stations that have witnessed great inclination towards the Western style and influence, this recent change would bring in originality and architectural culture preservation, thereby respecting local artists and architects.
