Kanpur Metro

Operational Operator: UPMRCL Since: 28/12/2021 Official site ↗

Kanpur Metro, built by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRCL), is bringing rapid transit to one of north India’s largest industrial cities. Its Phase 1 plan comprises two corridors and around 30 stations, with the Orange Line’s priority section between IIT Kanpur and Moti Jheel opened in December 2021.

Construction continues on the underground central stretch through Kanpur’s dense commercial core and on the second corridor toward Naubasta, financed in part by a European Investment Bank loan.

Why it matters

Kanpur illustrates UPMRCL’s now-standardised delivery playbook – the same corridors-plus-priority-section approach, shared rolling-stock procurement (its trains were tendered jointly with Agra’s), and EIB climate financing seen across the corporation’s projects. The tunnelling beneath Kanpur’s congested old commercial districts is the current engineering challenge.
