How hyperloop works
A hyperloop system pulls together three ideas. A sealed tube is held at very low pressure to strip out most air resistance. A pod levitates on magnetic or air-bearing systems to remove rolling friction. Linear-motor propulsion then accelerates and brakes the pod. In principle that delivers airline-beating speed at ground level with high energy efficiency. The engineering is hard, though. Holding a vacuum over long distances, keeping passengers safe, managing thermal expansion of the tubes and controlling cost all remain unsolved at scale, which is why hyperloop everywhere is still pre-commercial.
Hyperloop in India
India’s most concrete hyperloop work is academic and railway-led. IIT Madras, through its student team and the Ministry of Railways, has built a hyperloop test facility, including a test track meant to validate pod, levitation and vacuum-tube technology on Indian soil. That places India among the countries actively experimenting with the concept rather than only proposing routes.
Proposed routes and the Virgin Hyperloop chapter
The best-known Indian route proposal was a Mumbai to Pune hyperloop, promoted around 2017 to 2019 with Virgin Hyperloop, alongside ideas for corridors such as Amritsar to Chandigarh and links around Bengaluru. None moved past the concept and feasibility stage, and global hyperloop companies later scaled back. For now the momentum sits with home-grown test-track research, not commercial route contracts.
Hyperloop next to high-speed rail
People often compare hyperloop with high-speed rail, but the two are at very different stages. High-speed rail is proven, under construction on the Mumbai to Ahmedabad corridor and already running commercially worldwide at 320 km/h. Hyperloop is experimental, unproven at scale, and years away from carrying paying passengers. For the foreseeable future, HSR and RRTS do the heavy lifting on fast rail, with hyperloop as a research frontier.
