Patna Metro is bringing rapid transit to Bihar’s capital for the first time, with a two-corridor Phase 1 combining elevated and underground sections. The first 3.2 km section of the priority corridor, between Zero Mile and ISBT, opened in October 2025, marking the start of metro operations in the state.
The remainder of Phase 1, including the underground stretch through central Patna, is under construction, with full completion targeted for the end of the decade.
Patna represents the spread of metro rail into India’s eastern heartland and lower-income states, where the ridership and financing case differs from the wealthier metros of the west and south. How Patna’s early operations perform will inform the debate over whether full metros – versus lighter Metrolite or Metro Neo systems – are the right fit for cities of its size and density.
