Lucknow Metro

Operational Operator: UPMRCL Length: 22.878 km Official site ↗

Lucknow Metro, run by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRCL), gave Uttar Pradesh’s capital its first rapid-transit line – the North–South Red Line linking the airport to Munshipulia across the city. Built largely elevated with an underground central section, it was completed unusually quickly for an Indian metro of its size.

A second East–West corridor received central government approval in 2025, setting up the network’s expansion into a two-line system.

Why it matters

Lucknow set an early benchmark for construction speed among the newer UPMRCL metros, and its North–South line became the model UPMRCL later replicated in Kanpur and Agra. The approval of the East–West corridor makes Lucknow a marker for how quickly a single-line metro can be greenlit for expansion once ridership is established.
