Kochi Metro
Kochi Metro is the rapid transit system serving Kerala’s commercial capital, run by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). It opened in 2017 and stands out for how tightly it ties into the rest of the city’s transport, including the Kochi Water Metro, so a single journey can move between train, boat and bus on one ticket.
The network
The metro runs about 28 km along an elevated corridor through the heart of Kochi, linking Aluva in the north with the southern parts of the city and its major transit points. Extensions push the line further toward Kakkanad and the IT corridor. KMRL also runs the Kochi Water Metro, and the two systems share ticketing so riders can switch between rail and boats without friction.
Operator and what comes next
KMRL builds and runs both the metro and the water metro, and the agency is known for its social hiring, including a large workforce drawn from the Kudumbashree network. Current work covers line extensions and deeper integration with feeder services. New sections, contract awards and tenders arrive as construction continues.
