Kochi Metro, operated by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), is among India’s most socially distinctive transit systems – known for employing a large workforce of women and transgender staff, and for integrating its rail line with the city’s water-transport network under a unified mobility authority.
The elevated Phase 1 line runs along Kochi’s main north–south spine, and its extension toward the airport and a second corridor extend the network into new districts. KMRL’s integration of metro, feeder buses and the Kochi Water Metro under a single authority is its defining institutional feature.
Kochi pioneered the “integrated urban mobility” model in India – one agency coordinating rail, water and road feeder services with a common fare. Combined with its water metro, the first of its kind in the country, Kochi is the clearest example of a city treating public transport as a single network rather than a set of disconnected modes. That model is now studied by other mid-sized cities.
