India’s Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) carries passengers under the Namo Bharat brand, and it is unlike anything the country has run before. It sits between a city metro and true high-speed rail: trains built for up to 160 km/h, limited stops, and a reach that ties a metropolitan core to satellite cities across a whole region. RRTS corridors at a glance

The National Capital Region hosts India’s first generation of RRTS corridors, planned and delivered by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). Each corridor links to its full Metro Rail News profile with route, stations, cost and current status.

How RRTS differs from metro and bullet trains

A city metro handles short, frequent hops within an urban area and usually tops out near 80 km/h. High-speed rail, like the Mumbai to Ahmedabad bullet train, is built for 300-plus km/h intercity travel between distant cities. RRTS takes the middle ground on purpose. Distances run roughly 60 to 200 km, trains hold 160 km/h point to point, and services stay frequent enough that you can walk up and go.

The rolling stock is purpose-built for that role. Namo Bharat trains, first previewed as RapidX, come with aircraft-style seating, wide doors, level boarding and a premium coach. One more thing sets the system apart: the same track can host two tiers of service, regional Namo Bharat trains running limited stops end to end, and local metro-style trains calling at every station through the denser urban stretches.

The Phase-1 NCR corridors

Three corridors were prioritised for the National Capital Region:

  • Delhi–Meerut RRTS. The flagship, a 82.15 km line and India’s first operational RRTS, connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut. It is opening in phases, with priority sections already carrying passengers and Namo Bharat trains extending across the alignment.
  • Delhi–Alwar RRTS. An approved corridor of about 199 km, heading south-west from Delhi through Gurugram and the SNB (Shahjahanpur, Neemrana, Behror) node toward Alwar in Rajasthan.
  • Delhi–Panipat RRTS. An approved corridor of about 103 km, running north from Delhi through Sonipat toward Panipat in Haryana.

The network is growing beyond those three. A Ghaziabad–Jewar RRTS is planned to link the network with the Noida International Airport at Jewar, and cities such as Patna are studying their own RRTS corridors as the model proves itself.

Who builds and runs the RRTS

NCRTC delivers the NCR corridors. It is a joint venture of the Government of India and the state governments of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, and it handles design, construction, systems and operations. Along the way it has brought several firsts to Indian rail, from the Namo Bharat trainsets to advanced signalling and a common mobility ecosystem across the corridor.
