Seven out of Eight RRTS stations of Ghaziabad to make pedestrians friendly

GHAZIABAD (Metro Rail News): The Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project passing through Ghaziabad will have a footbridge facility for passengers as well as regular pedestrians at seven out of the eight stations in the district.

Eight RRTS stations in the area are currently in advanced phases of construction before the 82-kilometer-long project gets commissioned in March 2025.A high-speed train network with a planned speed of 180 kilometers per hour (kmph) will connect the three cities of Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut as part of the project, which is estimated to cost Rs.30,274 crore. As a part of the project, a 17-km section in Ghaziabad with five RRTS stations is being planned as a “priority section” and will be the first RRTS section in the nation to be operational in 2023.“Ghaziabad has eight stations including the one at Duhai depot which is not located on any major road and is at a considerable distance from the Delhi-Meerut Road. Of the eight stations, seven elevated stations are getting developed with entry/exit points on both sides so that the stations are accessible to passengers from either side of the road,” said Puneet Vats, chief public relations officer, National Capital region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the agency that has undertaken the RRTS project.“The entry/exits at seven stations in Ghaziabad are getting designed on both sides of the roads. This will help passengers to cross over busy roads such as the Link Road and the Delhi-Meerut Road. These entry/exits will be accessible not just for RRTS passengers but also for pedestrians who can use them to cross major roads without entering the paid area of the RRTS stations. We have incorporated a pedestrian-friendly feature and it will help in the safe movement of pedestrians and also help in crowd management at stations,” Vats added.Sahibabad, Ghaziabad City, Guladhar, Duhai, Duhai Depot, Modinagar (north), and Modinagar (south) are the eight stations in Ghaziabad.According to NCRTC officials, the RRTS project will carry a ridership of 800,000 passengers daily once fully operational.

Fourth Vande Bharat is likely to start operations between Delhi and Una

GUJARAT (Metro Rail News): The fourth semi-high-speed Vande Bharat train after Gujarat, which will depart from the railways’ Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, is most likely to be pressed into service for poll-bound Himachal Pradesh. Within the next two weeks, the trainset or rake will probably be prepared.According to sources, the train would do a test run between Delhi and Una (in Himachal Pradesh), passing through Chandigarh. The government would probably choose to run the train on the route between Delhi and Una or Delhi and Kalka. Kalka is also known as the entrance to Himachal Pradesh. Currently, express trains travel the distance between Delhi and Una in about 7-8 hours. The deployment of this train would cut down on overall journey time.Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had flagged off the third Vande Bharat train, which can run at a top speed of 160 kmph, from Gandhinagar station. Every state wants to get the Vande Bharat trains, say officials. They stated that the testing for the new train will last for a few days because the prototype train has already undergone thorough testing on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route to receive the chief commissioner of railway safety’s (CCRS) approval. Testing needs to be done on the overhead equipment (OHE) and other crucial components. The 16-coach Vande Bharat train would be hauled to Delhi in accordance with the schedule, and would then undergo a brief test run on the Delhi-Una route.Compared to the two first-generation trains now operating on the Delhi-Varanasi and Delhi-Katra routes, the second-generation Vande Bharat has better amenities and is faster.

ETCS Level 2 Signalling Over LTE Successfully Tested on Delhi-Meerut RRTS by NCRTC

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Shri Vinay Kumar Singh, Managing Director, NCRTC, on-board RRTS trainset along with all the Directors and other senior officials of NCRTC, recently initiated the first dynamic test run of the RRTS trainset with the European Train Control System (ETCS) level 2 signalling over LTE communication network, on the test tracks in Duhai Depot. The test run was successful and the Signalling system and the RRTS trainset operated with each other as per the technical expectations.ETCS technology is widely deployed globally on GMS-R communication networks in Europe and other countries. GSM-R technology will become obsolete in near future. It is for the first time in the world that standard ETCS technology is being deployed by NCRTC on the LTE communication backbone for RRTS.LTE provides a high throughput communication link which will be used for mission-critical data, voice, IoT, important video and other important message exchanges between the train to the trackside and the operation control centre. The Department of Telecommunication (DOT) has temporarily allocated a spectrum in the 900 MHz band for the commissioning of the LTE network for the priority section of Delhi-Meerut RRTS. For the allocation of spectrum in the 700 MHz band permanently, a reference has been made by DOT to TRAI and the recommendation of TRAI is expected soon.Commuter-centricity being a core value of NCRTC, it has strategically planned for interoperability between all three priority corridors of Phase 1 and the adoption of ETCS Level 2 signalling technology was crucial for enabling it. ETCS Level 2 signalling is vendor agnostic and there it is not essential to go back to the same vendor for future extensions of the corridor. Adopting this technology, which is suitable for the design speed of 180 Kmph of RRTS, will allow the RRTS trains to move seamlessly from one corridor to another. This will help passengers travel comfortably without the hassle of changing trains and promote a modal shift to public transport.J82A0832 1ETCS signalling will be integrated with the Platform Screen Doors at all the RRTS stations of the corridor. PSD will safeguard commuters on the platform by providing a barrier between the platform and the track. While congratulating the team NCRTC and engineers of Alstom and Nokia, Shri Vinay Kumar Singh, MD, NCRTC said “This is for the first time in the world that a combination of the latest ETCS Level 2, having Automatic Train Operation (ATO) over Long-Term Evolution (LTE) radio is being deployed. I am happy that despite this technological challenge and serious supply-chain constraints posed by the pandemic, NCRTC successfully procured the ETCS Level 2 Signalling system under Make in India guidelines and implemented it within the stipulated timelines.” He also said that “this step will be instrumental to create indigenous capacity for similar systems in the country.”

China debuts World’s fastest Maglev train

BERLIN, GERMANY (Metro Rail News): China has introduced the world’s fastest train, the maglev, which is capable to attain a top speed of 600 km/h. The high-speed train was unveiled by China’s train maker CRRC during a trade fair for the railway sector in Berlin, Germany. The manufacturing company claims that China’s indigenous technology was used to develop the train. It claimed that a successful test run of the train prototype had already been conducted in China.Since the 1980s, some commercial trains have used magnetic levitation, or “maglev,” which accelerates or pulls objects using an electrified magnetic field. Nowadays, South Korea, China, and Japan all use maglev trains.Shanghai in China already has a functional Maglev train service that links the main city with the airport. Maglev or Magnetic levitation uses electromagnetic force to literally “levitate” the whole train above the track with no physical contact between the rail and the body, which produce no friction. The magnets on the track and those on the train’s body repel one another with a powerful force, which causes the train to be levitated.Besides Maglev, China already has a network of 37,900 km of high-speed rail (HSR or bullet trains). Its plans to almost double the network in the next 10 years.Chinese researchers are working on automotive maglev technology as well. Recent road tests for modified passenger cars that use magnets to float 35 millimeters above a conductor rail were done by researchers at Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.
