Delhi Metro
The Delhi Metro is India’s largest and busiest rapid transit system, run by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). It serves Delhi and the NCR cities of Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Bahadurgarh, and has grown from an 8.4 km stretch opened in 2002 to a network of more than 390 km. For millions of daily riders it is the backbone of getting around the capital region.
The network
Delhi Metro runs a set of colour-coded lines that reach across the capital and deep into the NCR, joined by interchange stations that let riders cross the city without touching the road. Services span underground, elevated and at-grade sections, and the separate Airport Express line links New Delhi with Indira Gandhi International Airport. A mix of standard-gauge and broad-gauge corridors, automatic train operation and a common smart-card and QR ticketing system round out the network.
Operator and what comes next
DMRC built and runs the system, and its work set the template that later Indian metros followed. The current focus is Phase 4, which adds new corridors and extensions to plug gaps in the existing map and carry the network further into the NCR. Fresh line extensions, tenders and rolling-stock orders keep arriving as the phase progresses.
