Kanpur (Metro Rail News): Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL) – Gulermak JV deployed the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Saraswati at the Rawatpur Metro Station of 8.38 km Line 2, which connects Agriculture University—Barra-8.

TBM Saraswati’s Work Scope for Kanpur Metro Line 2
For Line 2, TBM Saraswati will construct a 622 m tunnel (down-line) from Rawatpur Station towards the ramp at Agriculture University. TBM S-840C (Parvati) and TBM S-1408 (Gomati) will construct the rest of the portion.
TBM (S-839C), nicknamed Sarswati, is the 2nd TBM which has been deployed following the TBM Gomati to construct a twin tunnel on Line 2. In addition, this is also the 6th TBM for the entire Kanpur Metro Phase 1. Previously, this machine worked as TBM Tunga for Bangalore Metro’s Pink Line.
The KPIL-Gulermak JV is executing this tunneling work within underground Package KNPCC-11, which spans 4.08 km and connects Agriculture Depot and Double Pullia Ramp. This section will consist of three underground metro stations: Rawatpur, Kakadeo, and Double Pullia.
KPIL – Gulermak JV’s Work in Package KNPCC-11
In December 2023, KPIL – Gulermak JV secured the Package KNPCC-11 from Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) at Rs. 762.50 crore with a 30-month deadline.
Under this contract the JV is responsible for the Design and Construction of TBM Tunnel, Cut and Cover Tunnel, ramp after Double Pullia, ramps in Agriculture Depot for main line and depot connections and three underground metro stations (viz. Rawatpur, Kakadeo and Double Pullia) including Architectural finishes etc. on Corridor-2 of Kanpur MRTS Project.
Progress on Line 2
In January, the Tunnel Boring Machine (S-1408A), referred to as Gomati, successfully attained a breakthrough at the Ramp area of the Agriculture University. Currently, its components are being transported back to Rawatpur Station, where they will be reassembled and prepared for a subsequent launch from the south shaft towards Kakadeo Station, facilitating a drive of 772 meters.
