MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has (MMRDA) proposed installation of rooftop solar panels at 17 stations on Line 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar Andheri) and 13 stations on Line 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East).

The MMRDA has constructed the rooftop of the Charkop depot, In addition to the 30 stations which are available for solar panels. The MMRDA has suggested a solar power generation capacity of 7,100 kW.

According to the officials, the solar panels on Line 2A will add 2,600 kW to the total, the panels above Line 7 stations will add 2,000 kW, and the panels on the depot’s roof will add 2,500 kW.

Under the RESCO (Renewable Energy Service) model, the MMRDA plans to install rooftop solar panels for over 25 years.

In a RESCO model, a bidder takes over control of a site or rooftop that is under the control of an authority and enters into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the supply of solar electricity beginning on the date of commissioning under terms and conditions that have been mutually agreed upon, including its entire operation and maintenance.

Before May 24, prospective bidders can submit their applications by paying tender security of Rs 13.87 lakh.

  1. I was delighted to come across your article discussing the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) plan to install rooftop solar panels at 30 stations. This initiative is a commendable step towards promoting clean and sustainable energy solutions within the public transportation sector.

The installation of rooftop solar panels at metro stations presents multiple benefits. Firstly, it allows for the generation of renewable energy on-site, reducing reliance on conventional sources and decreasing the carbon footprint associated with energy consumption. This aligns with global efforts to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.

Secondly, the use of solar energy helps to mitigate the operational costs of the metro stations. Solar power can offset a significant portion of the electricity demand, leading to potential cost savings for the MMRDA in the long run. This demonstrates the economic viability of renewable energy solutions and highlights the financial benefits that can be realized through their implementation.

Additionally, the installation of solar panels at metro stations serves as a visible symbol of the commitment to sustainability and renewable energy. It sends a positive message to the public and encourages greater awareness and engagement in clean energy practices. This can inspire individuals to consider their own energy consumption habits and explore renewable energy options for their homes and businesses.

Furthermore, the MMRDA’s initiative sets an example for other transportation authorities and organizations around the world. By showcasing the successful integration of solar energy in metro infrastructure, the MMRDA can inspire similar projects and encourage collaboration in advancing sustainable transportation solutions globally.

I would like to commend the MMRDA for its proactive approach to adopting renewable energy solutions for its metro stations. Their commitment to installing rooftop solar panels demonstrates their dedication to reducing environmental impact, optimizing operational costs, and promoting sustainable practices within the transport sector.
