Aligning equipment with application considerations Switchgear provides essential functions: control, protection, and isolation of electric equipment and circuits. Power distribution systems across every application and market use switchgear to support power reliability and enhance safety. Typically, Switchgear is installed and expected to work for 25 years or longer. Despite Switchgear’s longevity and critical function, equipment selected for a specific job site can be based on past experiences. This method may not always align with the current application or job-site requirements. In medium-voltage applications, selecting between air-insulated Switchgear (AIS) and gas-insulated Switchgear (GIS) can be driven objectively by understanding the differences between the equipment. Today, the bulk of installed equipment is air-insulated Switchgear. Yet gas-insulated equipment can provide advantages in specific applications. As we’ll see on the next page, one main advantage of GIS is its footprint. To determine the right equipment to apply, it is best to understand how it is designed, operated, and maintained. This paper identifies critical considerations for selecting the type of medium-voltage Switchgear used in industrial, oil & gas, utility, data centre and other commercial applications.

Difference between AIS and GIS equipment?

AIS uses air as the primary insulating medium. AIS is further classified as metal-clad or metal-enclosed. Metal-clad Switchgear has extensive barriers, shutters, primary bussing covered with insulation and draws out vacuum circuit breakers to interrupt faults. Metal-clad Switchgear is designed, manufactured, and tested to applicable American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standards. GIS has sealed enclosures filled with insulating gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) or a mixture of SF6 and other insulating gases that have been recently released to the market) for insulation and uses fixed-mounted circuit breakers with three-position disconnect switches. GIS switchgear is designed, manufactured, and tested to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) performance standards. IEEE standards for metal-enclosed GIS are expected to be released soon. The equipment selection is based on the application requirements of customers’ power systems and operational preferences. Application requirements include service voltage, continuous current, and interrupting capabilities. In general, voltage, continuous current, and interrupting ratings are similar between GIS and metal-clad Switchgear. Continuous current and interrupting ratings for metal-clad Switchgear can reach 4000 A and 63 kA, respectively, whereas GIS is typically limited to 3000 A and 40 kA.

Operational flexibility:

Metal-clad Switchgear provides more operational flexibility compared to GIS. If application needs changed, modifications to primary circuits and future expansion could be easily made with metal-clad equipment. Primary circuit modifications/future expansion may not be easily made or possible with GIS equipment. Therefore, future application needs must be taken into consideration when selecting metal-clad and GIS.

Equipment space, size, and location considerations:

Due to differences in insulating mediums used in metal-clad Switchgear and GIS, there are significant differences between the metal-clad and GIS equipment sizes. At 27 and 38 kV, GIS offers a much smaller footprint than metal-clad Switchgear. Utilizing GIS at those voltages can reduce the footprint by up to 60 per cent, saving building costs and freeing up space for other use. At 5 and 15 kV, lineups of metal-clad Switchgear and GIS have similar footprints. The footprint savings at 27 and 38 kV are attractive and are one of the main reasons most GIS is applied for 27 and 38 kV applications.

Maintenance and environmental considerations:

Metal-clad equipment with withdrawable circuit breakers and auxiliary components, such as VTs and CPTs, are easy to install, operate, test, and maintain. However, the performance and dielectric integrity of metal-clad equipment is negatively affected by environmental contaminants and humidity. Therefore, more elaborate and frequent maintenance may be required depending on the application location and surrounding environment. In the case of GIS, primary circuits and components are contained within a sealed tank or covered with solid encapsulated insulation. They, therefore, are not subject to destructive effects of the surrounding environment, thus requiring minimal or no maintenance for long periods.

Safety:

By its defining characteristics and design requirements, metal-clad equipment uses more total parts than equivalent GIS equipment. Therefore, in general, GIS is considered more reliable compared to metal clad. In addition, GIS is considered inherently arc-resistant because it is impervious to environmental contaminants and foreign intrusion.

Total cost considerations:

As the voltage decreases, metal-clad Switchgear is more cost-effective, as the cost of metal-clad Switchgear is less at lower voltages, while the cost for GIS remains similar across voltage ratings. For equipment at 5/15 kV voltage classes, the cost of GIS can be upward of two or even two-and-a-half times as much as metal-clad equipment.

Conclusion

Equipment, AIS or GIS, must be selected based on the equipment’s ratings and capabilities to satisfy actual application requirements. GIS equipment offers a smaller footprint and space savings but may have a higher initial cost. However, GIS requires minimal or no maintenance over long periods compared to regular or more frequent maintenance for metal-clad, hence in the long run, GIS may offer a cost advantage over metal-clad. Also, GIS is not impacted by environmental influences and therefore, it is expected to provide more reliable performance and safety over metal clad. Where future expansion/changes are expected, metal-clad should be considered as it provides more operational and expansion/modification flexibility. Presently, most switchgear applications at 5 and 15 kV uses metal clad as it is less costly than GIS and offers a choice of ratings to suit most applications. Experience with installation, operation, and maintenance of metal-clad Switchgear can make it more attractive than GIS.

KOCHI, INDIA (Metro Rail News): More than 200 of the 311 Kochi metro stations have received vacancies due to Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) response to the sale of venues to collect revenue from non-ticketing sources.

The metro agency has welcomed a mix of new and trouble-free processes. It has launched a campaign to sell spaces, every 120 square feet, initially for five years. The four-day auction, where registration of venues can be held, will conclude at Ernakulam Town Hall on Saturday.

Elaborating on the auction, most of the kiosk areas would soon have restaurants, packed grocery stores, and shops selling mobile phones and electronics. “Details of the 100-odd kiosk sites that are still open for download have been published on the KMRL website. They will be resold on Saturday,” said KMRL officials.

Such large public auctions are rare these days as e-auction is the norm regarding the auction program. “Small and medium-sized traders, except for businessmen and women, benefit greatly from the auction. An unconventional approach was also adapted to market advertising. Therefore, our staff teams distribute notices, visit stores, and explain to traders the simple steps that will get them accommodations at municipal stations,” said officials.

Procedure for auction

“The response has far exceeded our expectations, with people coming from as far away as Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kannur. Many of them were from West Asia who wanted to establish shops here. All they had to carry was a Government ID. When the auction was completed, all authorizations were finalized in less than 30 minutes. Then, they were given three days to submit a deposit and another 30 days to open their kiosks,” said Mr Rajendran. He pointed out that countless women entrepreneurs who came to open food and other outlets were due to their high visibility, safety and security within the municipal stations.

Street-level shopping malls picked up the highest prices, followed by those at the stadium and stadium level. The introductory price is Rs. 15 sq. each month, space was allocated for selected stations, increasing to Rs. 105 sq. ft. each at Edappally station.

Chennai Metro Rail yet to reach pre-Covid daily average patronage

CHENNAI, INDIA (Metro Rail News): After the lockdown was lifted, metro train services in Chennai were restored for the first time in over four months. However, the average daily patronage has yet to reach one lakh.

According to CMRL, an average of 95,786 persons used the service daily in October, bringing the monthly total to 29.7 lakh. However, despite an increase from September’s 26.9 lakh rides, the daily average has not yet reached pre-Covid levels of 1.16 lakh and is nowhere near the expected ridership of 7.76 lakh.

In October, 44,716 people used QR code ticketing systems, approximately 16 lakh people used smartcards, and the remaining bought tokens.

Since the start of service on June 21, 462 passengers have been arrested and fined for not wearing or correctly wearing masks. In addition, a punishment of Rs 200 was imposed on each of them, bringing the total amount collected to Rs 92,400.

Union Minister of Transportation asks CM to submit a plan for Metro Rail

Union minister Nitin Gadkari took up a proposition for Metro Rails in Goa during a spectacular celebration held in Verna Industrial Area ahead of the 2022 assembly elections and requested Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant to present a plan for the transit system.

Along with the airport, he announced a state-of-the-art connection road for Mopa, completed by 2023. He stated that the centre had given its approval. Since 2014, Goa has spent Rs12 000 crore on highway projects.

Sawant had previously stated that it is a delight to watch an excellent enterprise being inaugurated. This link road will connect North and South Goa, and credit should go to the engineering team. He also mentioned the second Zuari Bridge, which is the country’s third-longest cable bridge. NHSRCL has completed 33% of land acquisition in Maharashtra for MAHSR Corridor

MAHARASHTRA, INDIA (Metro Rail News): National High-Speed ​​Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has completed the acquisition of 33 per cent of land in Maharashtra for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR)/ bullet train corridor, a dream project of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Land acquisition is ongoing in Maharashtra and we expect to speed up the process and get more land in the coming months of this project,” said the NHSRCL chief executive officer.

By September, the NHSRCL – an official soon to build the Mumbai-Ahmedabad railway project – had acquired 30% of the land from the government.

To push the procurement process, the Minister of State for Railways, Rao Saheb Danve, visited Mumbai last month and contacted senior officials of the NHSRCL, Western Railway, regional collectors of Palghar Raigad and Thane, as well as government officials. He also instructed officials to work to increase the pace of land grabbing.

Construction work on the bullet tunnel has begun in Gujarat, with the first phase between Surat and Bilimora expected to open in 2026.

On the 508.17 KMs bullet train route, 155.76 KMs is in Maharashtra, 384.04 KMs in Gujarat, and 4.3 KM in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

AHMEDABAD, INDIA (Metro Rail News): In its endeavour to complete the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase 1 by August 2022 so as to coincide with the 75th year of India’s independence, Gujarat metro rail corporation (GMRC) completed a milestone today by placing the OWG (Open Web Girder) spanning – 7 Railway tracks at Sabarmati.

The Open Web Girder is 73m long and 12m wide. It is made of more than 550 MT steel members tied together by 18500 HSFG bolts. The total weight of the girder is 850 MT.

The girder is launched using two winch machines and at a launching speed of 250mm per minute.

First Full Span 40 m Box Girder being cast for Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor by NHSRCL

NEW DELHI, INDIA (Metro Rail News): On October 28, 2021, NHSRCL began casting the First Full Span Pre-Stressed Concrete (PSC) Box Girder of 40-meter span in a casting yard in Anand, Gujarat, to speed the construction of the viaduct for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor (MAHSR).

The biggest PSC Box Girder in the Indian construction sector will be a 40 m span PSC Box Girder weighing roughly 970 MT. The 40-meter Span Girder is cast in one piece, without any construction joints, using 390 cubic meters of concrete and 42 tons of steel.

To speed up the construction of the viaduct, the substructure and superstructure are being built simultaneously. While work on the substructure, such as the Pile, Pile Cap, Pier, and Pier Cap, continues, casting yards have been built along the alignment to cast Full Span Girders and Segmental Girders, which will be launched using heavy machinery over casted Pier Caps.

Twenty-three casting yards are being built along the alignment for the casting of girders. Each casting yard is positioned along the alignment and covers an area of 16 to 93 acres, depending on the requirements.

In each casting yard, facilities such as jigs for producing rebar cages, Casting Beds with Hydraulically Operated Prefabricated Molds, Batching Plants, Aggregate Stacking Area, Cement Silos, and Labor Camps have been developed to expedite the casting of Girders while maintaining quality.

The majority of the rafters will be Full Span 30, 35, and 40 m, but in places where space is limited, segmental launching of small precast segments will be used. Complete Span Girders are preferable to Segmental Girders since they launch seven times faster.

Heavy gear such as a Straddle Carrier, Bridge Gantry, Transporter, and Launching Gantry will be used to launch these Precast Girders. Girders will be cast in advance and stacked in an organized manner in these casting yards to assure a constant supply of girders for launching.

The Box Girder will be picked up from the stacking yard by the Straddle Carrier and fed to the Bridge Gantry, raising the Box Girder and positioning it over Pier Cap’s bearing. The Bridge Gantry will launch the first 3-4 Box Girders, after which a Girder Transporter will be placed, and the Girders will be launched in a sequential order using the Transporter and Launching Gantry.

The casting yards and heavy machinery for launching have been planned to fulfil the peak demand of around 300 Full Span Box Girder Casting and launch each month, which equates to approximately 12 kilometers of superstructure casting and erection per month.

NHSRCL invites bids for the construction of a 21-km tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train

NEW DELHI, INDIA (Metro Rail News): On Friday, the National High-Speed Railway Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) released a request for proposals to construct a 21-kilometre tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR).

According to a spokeswoman for the NHSRCL, the tunnel will be built between the Bandra-Kurla Complex underground station and Shilphata in Maharashtra’s Thane district.

He said bids are being sought for tunnelling work 21 kilometers down, including a 7-kilometer-long undersea tunnel to be built utilising the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).

The tunnel will be a single tube twin-track tunnel with a 13.1 meters diameter that runs from BKC to Shilphata. The tunnel is 20.37 kilometers long in total, with 7 kilometers undersea. The package is open to both Japanese and Indian businesses, according to the official. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is estimated to cost Rs 1.08 lakh crore in total.

The tunnel will traverse Thane Creek, and the underwater static refraction technique was used to complete the survey work under the creek.

According to the shareholding pattern, the Centre would contribute Rs 10,000 crore to the NHSRCL, while Gujarat and Maharashtra will each pay Rs 5,000 crore. Japan will pay the remainder through a 0.1 per cent interest loan.

According to the official, at least 77.68 per cent of the land needed for the bullet train line has been purchased, or 1084.48 hectares out of a total of 1,396 hectares.

While 432.67 hectares are required for this ambitious project in Maharashtra, just 143.06 hectares have been purchased yet, according to the report. During a bid conference, seven Indian businesses expressed interest in building the undersea tunnel for the ambitious MAHSR route.
