MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region has received a major infrastructure upgrade as the Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee approved the ₹17,724.99 crore Mumbai Metro Line 13 project that will run 25.03 km via 16 stations, connecting Mira Road, Vasai, Naigaon, Nalasopara, and Virar regions. The significance of this project extends beyond just a metro link, as it envisions a 4.92-km double-decker bridge involving an integrated road and metro bridge. 

The Missing Link: First Direct Road & Metro Connectivity between Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar

Despite the extensive infrastructure development in MMR, there is no direct connectivity between Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar. Currently, commuters are required to take a 32 km road detour to reach these locations, which takes about 1 hour and 7 minutes. After this bridge is constructed, it will reduce the travel time to just a few minutes, as mentioned in the post on MMRDA’s X. Rather than requiring people to travel through the existing road network, the new link would create a direct cross-creek connection. The 4.92-km structure is envisioned as an integrated transport link carrying both road and Metro commuters.

Mumbai Metro Line 13: Connecting Suburban Railway & Metro Network

The 25.03-km Metro Line 13 will navigate through the developing regions, including Thane and Palghar districts. The corridor will run 21.78 km elevated and the remaining  3.25 km underground. It will stand out as a blueprint for establishing multimodal connectivity due to its interchange facilities with the Mumbai Suburban Railway network at Naigaon, Nalasopara, and Virar stations, and the existing Mumbai Metro Line 9 at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium. To maintain the rolling stock running on Line 13, a depot is also envisaged at Chikhal Dongri that will house the trains and be used for maintenance activities. For facilitating the last mile connectivity, bus connectivity is planned across all the stations of Metro Line 13. As per the estimates of the implementing authority, MMRDA, the project will benefit lakhs of commuters, minimising their overall travel time by 50% compared to road travel.
