Tunnel Breakthrough Achieved on Chennai Metro Line 4

0
Tunnel Breakthrough on Chennai Metro Line 4

CHENNAI (Metro RAIL NEWS): Chennai Metro Phase II crossed another tunnelling milestone with TBM Eagle achieving a breakthrough at the Thirumayilai shaft on Line 4 under Package UG-01.

The Line 4 covers a total distance of 26km from Light House to Poonamallee Bypass. The corridor includes an underground section between Light House Station near Marina Beach and Kodambakkam Flyover. This underground stretch is being executed under two packages, UG-01 and UG-02, each comprising 4 km of twin tunnels, which takes the total underground tunnelling length to 16 km. CMRL has deployed 4 TBMs to execute the tunnelling work in this underground section.

The TBM Eagle took more than 24 months to complete the tunnel drive. The 1,981-metre-long tunnel runs beneath 151 buildings, which makes the work particularly challenging. Along the alignment, the tunnel passes below several important and sensitive locations, including the Chennai Lighthouse, All India Radio, the Russian Embassy, Dominic Savio School, Rosary Church, and St. Raphael’s School. Despite these challenges, the engineering teams successfully completed the tunnelling work.
