First Tunneling Drive Of Delhi Metro Phase 4 Starts At Vikaspuri

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): A major milestone in DMRC’s Phase 4 work was achieved on thursday as the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) of this phase started its drive to bore a 1.4 kilometre long tunnel from Vikaspuri to Krishna Park Extension on the Janakpuri West – R K Ashram Marg corridor in the presence of DMRC’s Managing Director, Dr. Mangu Singh and other senior officials. 

“Two parallel circular tunnels for up and down movement will be constructed on this stretch which is a part of the 2.2 kilometre long underground section from Janakpuri West to Keshopur. The lowering and assembling process of this giant 73 metre long machine was started in October last year”, a statement by DMRC said.

The tunnelling has started from the Vikaspuri area in continuation of the Magenta line tunnel that has been already constructed for the presently operational Botanical Garden – Janakpuri West corridor.

The tunnel will be constructed approximately at a depth of 14 to 16 metres. About 2,040 concrete rings will be installed in these tunnels. Each tunnel will have an inner diameter of 5.8 metres. The entire tunnelling work on this stretch is expected to be completed in about 12 month’s time. The alignment of tunnel runs along the Outer ring road and below the multi-storied built up structures according to DMRC.

The tunnel will be built up with proven technology of EPBM (Earth pressure balancing method) with concrete lining made up of precast tunnel rings. The tunnel rings are being cast at the fully mechanized casting yard setup at Mundka. These concrete segments are cured with steam curing system to achieve early strength. This TBM will be able to carry out tunnelling up to 10 metres per day.

All necessary safety precautions are being taken while constructing the tunnel below the built up structures by monitoring the ground movements with highly sensitive instruments fixed on the nearby structures. After completion of tunnelling, this machine will be taken out from retrieval shaft being built with Krishna Park Extension underground station.

As part of the Phase 4 work approved so far, about 27 kilometres of underground lines will be constructed. The Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg corridor will have underground sections of 7.74 kilometres in total.

A TBM, is a machine used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross section through a variety of soil and rock strata. They can be designed to bore through anything from hard rock to sand. TBMs have revolutionised the way tunnelling work is done all over the world as now tunnels can be bored without disturbing the buildings and other structures on the surface.

TBMs are especially useful for underground tunnelling work in congested urban areas. DMRC has been using TBMs for its tunnelling work since Phase 1. In Phase 3, when about 50 kilometres of underground sections were built, about 30 TBMs were pressed into service in the national capital.

State-Of-The-Art Simulator Building Inaugurated At Delhi Metro Rail Academy, Shastri Park

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): In its pursuit to further upgrade its world class training facility at the Delhi Metro Rail Academy(DMRA), Shastri Park, a new four-storey simulator building was inaugurated today in the DMRA premises by Dr. Mangu Singh, Managing Director, DMRC in the presence of Directors and other senior officials.

Dr. Mangu Singh also inaugurated a new Foot Over Bridge (FOB) in front of Shastri Park Metro depot. This FOB will allow pedestrians to cross safely the busy East Approach Road (the road leading from ISBT, Kashmere gate towards Shahdara across Yamuna) from both the sides.

“The New Simulator building is equipped with state-of-the art simulator facilities pertaining to train driving, rolling stock maintenance, electrical, signalling etc. besides modern computer based training labs and other offices. Further upgradation of infrastructure in the new building includes a state-of-the-art Telepresence Room, a Civil engineering demo room, Model station control room, modern library, Recreational Centre, new Yoga/ Meditation Room, new Canteen, Auditorium, etc”, the DMRC said.

“With this new facility, the Delhi Metro Rail Academy will further raise the bar in the quality of training in the field of Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). Apart from infrastructural and technological makeover, the Academy has also reviewed its training curriculum with emphasis on standardization, content relevance and cross training advancements”, said Dr. Mangu Singh.

NRCTC to pioneer the use of the most- advanced signalling and train control technology in India’s first RRTS

– ETCS L2 signalling for Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor under the Make in India initiative 

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): NCRTC will pioneer the use of the most-advanced signalling and the train control system in India’s first RRTS. The adoption of the modern European Train Control System Level 2 (ETCS L2) signalling over the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) communication backbone with the adoption of state of art Hybrid Level 3, will make RRTS to have one of the most advanced signalling and train control system of the world.

In a recent development, Alstom India has been awarded the mandate for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of Signalling & Train Control, Telecommunication & PSD Systems for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor. This mandate conforms to the guidelines of Make in India, including fulfilling the specific requirement of local content in various components, as specified by the Government of India.

As per different sources, the RRTS will have state-of-the-art systems that will mark many firsts in India. One of them is its signalling system which will be of one of its kind in the whole nation. 

“Adoption of this signalling technology adds to the distinction of RRTS, as the first technologically advanced rail network in India to be operational with a design speed of 180 km/hr. This also strengthens NCRTC’s endeavour to leverage cutting-edge technology to enhance operational efficiency and hassle-free safe travel experience for commuters”, a statement said . 

A salient feature of the RRTS is its interoperability that will facilitate seamless commuter movement across corridors, without the hassle of changing the trains. The ETCS signalling system will be a key enabler to ensuring interoperability and train movement at quick frequencies, thereby reducing the waiting time for passengers. 

This system will also be the world’s first to deploy the combination of the latest ETCS Standard, the latest Digital Interlocking and Automatic Train Operation (ATO) over Long-Term Evolution (LTE) radio. The platform screen door operation will also be integrated which will provide the utmost level of safety to commuters.

The procurement strategy for this system has been planned to make adoption of this technology vendor-agnostic for future RRTS corridors thus reducing the costs. RRTS will be equipped with the Automatic Train Operations (ATO) functionality that controls the traction system, acceleration, braking and stopping of trains. It will facilitate efficient use of energy and reliable RRTS service according to an official. 
The ETCS hybrid signalling optimises the rail line capacity by anticipating and modifying the train speed through continuous control and supervision via a radio-based signalling system to ensure commuters’ safety. It is inarguably one of the the most-efficient train control system in the world, encompassing multiple advantages in terms of maintenance, cost and energy savings, safety, reliability, punctuality and traffic capacity. 

To avoid any possibility of accidental fall of passengers on the tracks, all the RRTS stations will have platform screen doors. The platform screen doors (PSDs) will be integrated with the signalling system, ensuring that the train doors and PSDs are synchronised. The train will start only after both train doors and PSDs are closed, thus ensuring full safety of the commuters.

DMRC Organises Online Programme On Promotion Of Ethical Work Culture In Association With IC Centre For Governance

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in association with the IC Centre for Governance today started a three day online programme oriented towards the inculcation of an ethical work culture among employees.

“Sh. Sanjay Kothari, the Hon’ble Central Vigilance Commissioner graced the inaugural session as the chief guest. In his address, he stressed on the importance of training for employees in the public sector as a tool for preventive vigilance. The hon’ble CVC also said that DMRC is an ‘Institute of Excellence’ with best practices in terms of an ethical work culture”, the DMRC said.

DMRC’s Managing Director, Dr. Mangu Singh, in his address spoke about the importance DMRC lays on maintaining punctuality. In 20 years, DMRC has constructed a network of close to 400 kilometres. Delhi Metro is running about 5,000 trips everyday maintaining a punctuality of 99.9 percent. The punctuality is measured in terms of seconds. If a train reaches later than 59 seconds, it is considered late, he said.   
The programme titled “Towards an Ethical Work Culture” will continue till 21st of January, 2021 and will cover various subjects such as ethical dilemmas and strategies to overcome, customer focus, inclusive leadership, preventive vigilance etc. The programme is being attended by DMRC officers from various departments.
The IC Centre for Governance (ICCfG) is an International Non-Profit Civil Society organisation which is engaged in looking at important issues of Governance in the country. The organisation comprises very senior retired civil servants, bankers, professors, managers and trainers. They work to promote ethics in public governance at all levels of the government and public sector undertakings so that a new breed of highly ethical executives and managers are produced who will work towards the uplift of citizens of the country through good governance and building policy capacity.

Kochi Metro To Reach New Heights With the Development of New Panamkutty Bridge

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): The Phase I of the KMRL project will reach a logical conclusion, by interconnecting it with Thripunithura, which is the satellite city of Kochi. Accordingly, the Phase-I extension is taken-up directly by Kochi Metro after DMRC have left completing Phase I upto Petta.
Panamkutty Bridge is located in NH 85, Kochi Dhanushkodi National High way, across Poorna River near to Petta Junction which is within the Phase-I extension of Kochi Metro from Petta to Thrippunithura Terminal. Presently there is a two-line bridge available in the National High way which is almost 50 years old. As part of its Preparatory works in line with Phase I Extension of Kochi Metro from Petta to Thrippunithura, KMRL is constructing additional two-lane Bridge with footpath which will make the stretch into Four lane corridor once completed. 
“Despite of all the hurdles including the COVID lockdown, Kochi metro has taken effective steps for efficient management and meticulous planning made us to achieve the result ahead of the schedule” said Alkesh Kumar Sharma, IAS, Managing Director, KMRL.
Few of the major features of New Panamkutty Brige that it consists of 5 Span (in which around 70m is across Poorna River), with total length including approach is 250m. The new bridge consists of Two Lane with 7.5 M carriageway and 1.5 M footpath. The Girders of Middle two Span over river is done vide Cast-in Situ Method using N – Truss Arrangement. The new bridge costs about 17.2 Cr for construction of the bridge. 
Construction work for the bridge has started on 1st of Nov 2019 which is scheduled to be completed in Jan 2021, within a short span of 15 Months. Pertinent point to mention is that originally the work was planned to be completed in 22 months, which now is being completed 7 months ahead of the planned completion period.

Haryana Government approves Delhi – Panipat RRTS

CHANDIGARH(Metro Rail News): The Haryana government has recently approved Delhi – Panipat RRTS. The project will now be considered by the state government of the Delhi , before submission to the Indian government for final approval.  
Following approval, the project is expected to take around six years to complete, and will be carried out in two stages: 
Sarai Kale Khan, NCT – Murthal (58km), and Murthal – Panipat (45km). 

The 1435mm-gauge, mostly elevated line will serve 17 stations, and will have an operating speed of 160km/h, enabling end-to-end journey times of 65 minutes. The line will be electrified at 25kV 50Hz ac.  The line is expected to boost the economy of the region, as well as improve access to healthcare and education for residents along the route according to recent updates.  

The line will enhance transport links to academic institutions such as Panipat Institute of Engineering and Technology, the IITM Group of Institutions, Ashoka University, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Sonipat Campus, and hospitals such as the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Park Hospital. 

Larsen and Toubro Emerges as The Lowest Bidder for Chennai Metro Phase II Bids

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) opened tenders on Friday for building tunnels and viaducts in three stretches in phase II project and Larsen and Toubro has emerged on top with the lowest bids.One of the biggest contracts in phase II is building tunnels for the 21-km Madhavaram-Taramani stretch according to a news agency.

This was split and floated as two tenders — Madhavaram to Kellys (9 km) and Kellys to Taramani Road Junction (12 km). For both these contracts, L&T emerged on top with the lowest bid of ₹1,998 crore for the Madhavaram-Kellys stretch and ₹2,385 crore for Kellys-Taramani Road Junction stretch.
L&T also emerged as the lowest bidder for building viaduct and stations from Poonamallee to Porur, quoting ₹945 crore. But as it already got a contract from Porur to Power House, it can select either the Porur-Poonamallee stretch or the Porur-Power House stretch. 

The scope of the work includes Construction of Elevated Metro Stations at Chennai Bypass Crossing, Ramachandra Hospital, Iyyapanthangal Bus Depot, Katupakkam, Kumanan Chavadi, Karayan Chavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee Bus Terminus, Poonamallee Bypass & Associated Viaduct from Chainage 17982.240 to Chainage 25928.186 and Approach to Depot at Poonamallee & All Associated works.

CSML Starts Developing Cycle Lanes in Kochi City

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): To create cycling friendly environment in Kochi City, Cochin Smart Mission Limited is developing cycle lanes throughout the Smart Roads. These cycles tracks will help to encourage people to use the clean and healthy mode of transport and ensure people to access these cycle lanes for their daily life. 
The Cycle lane is implementing as part of the India cycles 4 change challenge with the support of German development agency GIZ. The implementation works has been started on 16th January and will complete by 25th January 2021 according to an official.

  
After the successful implementation of the cycles lanes CSML will develop permanent cycles tracks on smart roads as the first phase. All the five smart roads in Kochi and Fort Kochi will have cycle tracks. They will be commissioned by March 31, 2021.

JSPL Continues To Shine Under The Leadership Of Mr. V R Sharma

  • The firm has gained a net profit of Rs 2,432 Crore in the third quarter of the ongoing financial year.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) on Thursday posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 2,432.20 crore for the quarter ended December 2020, mainly on account of increased income.

The company had recorded a net loss of Rs 257.36 crore during the same quarter a year ago, the firm said in a BSE filing.

During the quarter under review, its total income jumped to Rs 10,898.70 crore, as against Rs 7,526.28 crore in the October-December quarter of 2019-20, up about 45 per cent as per its Q-3 report.

Its standalone income during October-December 2020 was at Rs 8,739.37 crore, as against Rs 6,640.26 crore a year ago. Expenses reduced to Rs 5,924.66 crore, from Rs 6,492.64 crore.

“The quarter ended on December 31, showed recovery signs for the entire steel industry in India with both utilization levels and domestic demand rising month on month. However, the industry continues to struggle with raw material scarcity amplified by an exponential rise in domestic and international iron ore prices”, JSPL said in a statement.

“Strong performance in India steel as well as power business in 3QFY21, helped JSPL report Consolidated Gross Revenue of Rs. 11,704 Cr (up 39 % YoY) and EBITDA of Rs. 4,252 Cr (vs. Rs.1,574  Cr in 3QFY20). All operational assets except Australia reported positive EBITDA in 3QFY21. JSPL continues to benefit from improving operating and financial leverage with the Consolidated PAT  (Continuing Operations) at Rs. 2,432 Cr (vs loss of Rs.257 Cr in 3QFY20)”, the statement said.

JSPL continues to strengthen its balance sheet with net debt reducing further by Rs 3,289 Cr during the quarter (Rs. 10,298 Cr in 9MFY21). As on December 2020, JSPL reported Consolidated Net Debt  of Rs. 25,621 Cr. Net Debt to EBITDA (Trailing) at the end of December’20 stood at 2.

Siemens Mobility awarded service contract for ICE 4 trains

– Largest service order for Siemens Mobility from Deutsche Bah.

– IS 600 revision for 40 ICE 4 trains.

BERLIN (Metro Rail News): Deutsche Bahn (DB) has awarded Siemens Mobility a contract for the revision of 40 trains of the series 412 ICE 4. This is the largest service order ever awarded to Siemens Mobility by Deutsche Bahn. The contract also includes an option for the revision of 50 additional series 412 trains. IS 600 revisions are required for new high-speed trains operated by Deutsche Bahn when they have reached a mileage of 1.65 million kilometers. The work will be carried out beginning in mid-2021 in the “Expert House” service area of the Siemens Mobility Test and Validation Center in Wegberg-Wildenrath, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
“The ICE 4 is the backbone of DB’s mainline rail operations. As DB’s service partner, we will make a decisive contribution towards guaranteeing the availability and operation of the ICE 4 fleet and ensuring its sustainable performance over the entire lifecycle,” said Johannes Emmelheinz, CEO Customer Service at Siemens Mobility. 

As part of the IS 600 revision, Siemens Mobility will inspect the central systems and components of the ICE 4 trains and carry out maintenance activities as planned. The maintenance work will cover, among other things, the doors, windscreen washer systems, couplings, running and traction bogies, as well as pantographs, train control systems, and brakes.

Maintenance work in the train interior will include fire alarm systems, passenger information systems, bistro equipment, and the sanitary facilities. In addition, the wheelsets will be exchanged on all trains.Deutsche Bahn has ordered a total of 137 ICE 4 trains from Siemens Mobility since May 2011.

A new ICE 4 train is currently joining DB’s mainline fleet every three weeks. By last December, Siemens Mobility had delivered 65 of the ordered ICE 4 trains to Deutsche Bahn. The first trains in this series have been in passenger service since 2016.

Alstom wins ETCS contract for Delhi-Meerut RRTS

Alstom has won a contract worth €106 million from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation Ltd. (NCRTC) to design, supply and install the signalling, train control and telecommunication system (Package 24) of the 82.15 km Delhi – Ghaziabad – Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Corridor.

This line will be the 1st in India to adopt the European Train Control System Level 3 signalling system reducing the journey time between Delhi & Meerut to just 60 mins.

NCRTC is a joint venture between the Government of India and the States of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. It is implementing RRTS, a first-of-its-kind semi-high-speed rail line which will reduce the journey time between Delhi and Meerut to just 60 minutes, compared to the current 90-100 minutes, and with a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

Scope of work

Alstom’s scope of work includes design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of Signalling & Train Control, Supervision, Platform Screen Doors and Telecommunication Systems for the corridor. This line will be the first in India to adopt the European Train Control System (ETCS) hybrid Level 3 signalling system, which is the core signalling and train control component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

The contract marks a world premiere for the combination of the latest ETCS standard supported by the latest digital Interlocking and Automatic Train Operation (ATO) over Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio. The integrated platform screen door solution will also provide utmost safety to passengers.

In October 2020, Alstom reaffirmed its leading position in digital rail technologies by becoming the first company to achieve full certification for the latest onboard and trackside ETCS standards. ETCS hybrid Level 3 optimises line capacity in complete safety by anticipating and adapting the speed of the trains through continuous train control and supervision via a radio-based signalling system. It is arguably the most efficient train control system in the world, bringing significant advantages combined with automatic train operation (ATO) in terms of maintenance cost and energy savings, safety, reliability, punctuality and traffic capacity. Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II 

Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II is an extension of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-I, connecting Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar. The total length of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-I is 40.03 kms, out of which, one stretch of 6.5 kms is already functional from March 2019 and the balance 33.5 kms is at an advanced stage which is expected to be completed by August 2022, coinciding with the 75th year of India’s independence. The total completion cost of Phase-II project is Rs.5,384/- crore.

“The length of Corridor-1 of phase-II is 22.8 Kms from Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir which is a completely elevated corridor with 20 state of the art elevated Metro Stations with interchange facility  at Koteshwar Road for future provision to connect Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The length of Corridor-2 is 5.4 Kms from GNLU to GIFT City with 2 elevated stations, having interchangefacility at GNLU and a bridge over Sabarmati River. The population of 62.6 lakh of Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar agglomeration will benefit for Gujarat Metro Rail Project Phase II with safe, clean, cheaper and fast mode of transportation. All facilities will beavailable for differently able people in metro trains”, it added.

Surat Metro Rail Project:

Surat with a population of around 60 lakhs is the fastest growing city in India. The city is having no Mass Rapid Transportation System (MRTS), thus GoI and GoG decided to provide MRTS facility in Surat. Phase-I of Surat Metro Rail Project, with total length of 40.35 kms comprises of two corridors. Length of Corridor-1 is 21.61 kms and Corridor-2 is 18.74 kms with an estimated completion cost of project Rs.12,020 crore.

The Corridor-1 is from Sarthana to Dream City, which is comprising 14 elevated stations and 6 underground stations with depot at Dream City and the Corriodor-2 is from Bhesan to Saroli, which is comprising 18 elevated stations with depot at Bhesan. The Corridor from Dream City Depot to Kadarsha ni Nal of 9.88 Kms (Coorridor-1) is being taken up on priority which is having 10 elevated Metro Stations.

Bombardier Emerges As The Lowest Bidder For Mumbai Metro Line-4’s Coach Contract

MUMBAI(Metro Rail News): Bombardier Transportation has emerged as the lowest bidder to design and supply 234 metro coaches (Rolling Stock Package MRS2) for Mumbai Metro’s under construction 35.2 km Line-4 & 4A (Green Line) which will connect Wadala – Kasaravadavali – Gaimukh through 34 stations.
“Bombardier Transportation has been named the lowest bidder by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for Mumbai Metro’s 35-km long Line-4 & 4A (Green Line) project which will connect the areas of Wadala – Vikhroli – Kasaravadavali – Gaimukh through 34 stations”, the firm said in a statement.
The project involves design and supply of 234 metro cars and Bombardier will execute the project in accordance with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship ‘Make in India’ guidelines. These BOMBARDIER MOVIA metro cars will be produced at our Savli and Maneja sites near Vadodara in India. The trains will be designed at our engineering centre in Hyderabad, India with Train Control & Management System (TCMS) delivered by our two centres in Vadodara. The project award will be subsequently announced by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Since 2002, Bombardier has been supporting the Mumbai rail ecosystem by delivering and maintaining the Traffic Management system (TMS) for Mumbai’s Western and Central Railways. In addition, around 100 commuter trains of 12 cars each are equipped with Bombardier’s MITRAC propulsion system moving safely 7.8 million people (pre-covid) who travel daily on Mumbai suburban rail network.

“Bombardier has delivered 816 metro cars to Delhi Metro till date. Since the first Bombardier MOVIA metro train was introduced on Delhi Metro’s network in 2009, our fleet has travelled around 150 million kilometres and moved more than four billion passengers safely and comfortably”, the statement added.

In May 2020, Bombardier signed a contract with National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) for supplying 210 regional commuter and intracity cars with comprehensive maintenance for India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System and unveiled the train design in September 2020. In addition, we signed a contract with Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in July 2020 to supply 201 metro cars and signalling system for the Agra-Kanpur metro project.
