Dilip Buildcon launches first Precast Segment for Bhopal Metro Phase 1

BHOPAL (Metro Rail News): Workers from Dilip Buildcon Ltd. on Friday launched their first 8.5-meter wide precast segment for building the elevated viaduct of Bhopal Metro Phase 1 project’s 6.225 km Package-01 connecting Subhash Nagar with AIIMS.

This is the first section of Bhopal Metro’s 14.99 km Line-2 (Karond Circle – AIIMS) for which Dilip Buildcon commenced work in early 2019 through Rs. 247.06 crore contract awarded by the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Co Limited (MPMRCL) in October 2018 with a completion period of 27 months.

The segment was launched between Piers 144-145 near Kendriya Vidyalaya Station on Hoshangabad Road. Launching activities using a double-nosed crane will continue northward towards Subhash Nagar.

Besides the elevated viaduct between Subhash Nagar – AIIMS, Dilip Buildcon will also be constructing an entry/exit ramp to Jinsi Depot where trains will be stabled and maintained. Stations en-route will be built under a different civil package and be located at Shubhash Nagar, Kendriya Vidyalaya, DB City Mall, Sangam Cinema, Himansarovar / Habibganj Station, Habibgang Naka, Alkapuri Bus Stand and AIIMS.

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Working under a tight 3.5-hour window, workers from J Kumar Infraprojects recently launched three 36.87m steel girders for constructing the 18.6 km Mumbai Metro Line-2A (Yellow Line)’s viaduct over the Western Railways’ tracks at Dahisar.

The feat was accomplished between piers P67 and P68 right between Kandarpada Station (formerly Rushi Sankul Station) and Upper Dahisar Station (formerly Anand Nagar) on the northern end of the line.

Launching works over 4 sets of tracks started at 12:15 am and ended around 2:30 am, well inside the 3.5-hour mega railway block that was scheduled to end at 3:45 am. Two of the three girders had already been pre-assembled together prior to getting launched.

“This section of Line-2 is crucial for Line-7’s operations as well since its BEML train-sets for the foreseeable future will be stabled at Line-2’s Charkop Depot in Malvani as work on Line-7’s Dahisar Depot hasn’t been able to start yet due to pending land acquisition”, one official said.

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News):  Seepage at Majestic underground Metro station is troubling Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited once again following the recent heavy rain. Kempegowda Majestic Interchange, which has been operational since 2016, sees the highest footfall. It is also touted to be one of the biggest Metro stations in the country with world-class facilities. Yet, this is not the first time the station faced leakage problems.

At the underground and elevated stations, buckets are placed at several places whenever it rains heavily.BS Chandrasekhar Rao, who worked with various urban transport and mass rapid transit systems, said.

Metro Majestic station leaking again

“There seems to be extensive and widespread leakage of water and dampness on the walls. This is indicative of a major problem somewhere. There can be numerous causes for water leakage and seepage, and it is difficult to discover because the source of the leaking water and its manifestation can be too wide apart and water can travel long distances before it expresses itself”, he further added.

BMRCL chief public relations officer BL Yeshwanth Chavan said: “Ground-level water seeps. Grouting work which was done earlier is on.” It appears that water is leaking through the construction joints. Maybe the joints needed better attention during construction,” said a civil engineer. “There could be multiple reasons. The city received heavy rainfall for the past few years, so there is a possibility of rainwater not getting drained”, Prof Ananth Ramaswamy, a civil engineer at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was stated saying.

“Neither officials nor contractors are held responsible for the poor quality of civil work and maintenance. We want central and state governments to conduct a probe and take action against the guilty,” said Suryanarayana Murthy, vice president, Bangalore Metro Rail Employees Union.

Chennai Metro: Stations to be equipped with foot-operated elevators

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro has begun installing a mechanism to operate lifts in metro stations by foot to prevent commuters from touching elevator buttons and thereby reducing the risk of contracting COVID.

“32 stations along the 45km phase-1 will have foot-operated elevators by the end of this week. The nine stations coming up in Phase-1 extension, which will be ready at the end of this year, will also have similar elevators”, said one official. A metro rail official said they have installed the devices in three elevators at 20 of the 32 stations. This includes Alandur, Central and Airport which attract more footfall.

“Within a week, we will complete installation in other stations,” he added.

With the new mechanism, commuters using the elevators could simply tap a button on the floor of the lift with their feet and reach the concourse or platform levels. In May, metro rail had installed foot-operated elevators at its head office in Koyambedu. After receiving feedback from the users, it began installing them at the stations. All stations have two to four lifts that take passengers from the street level to concourse and then to platform levels.

Officials said all the nine stations in the 9km phase-1 extension that would link a part of North Chennai will be opened with such foot-operated lifts. Metro rail launched a few other facilities for contactless travel. It includes QR-code tickets, which could be purchased through the metro rail app, and travel card readers where passengers could simply tap their smartcard to recharge.

BANGALORE (Metro Rail News): Several farmers’ organisations across Karnataka have geared up for a state-wide bandh today to protest against the state government’s Land Reforms Ordinances and Centre’s agriculture Bills. 

The bandh is being supported by many labour organisations including the Peace Auto and Taxi Association, Bharath Vehicles drivers’ Union, Ola, Uber and Taxi for Sure Owners and Drivers Association, Lorry Owners Association and others have announced their support to the farmers by halting their services today. The metro services in Bengaluru will function normally with its normal schedule as no such support to the farmers’ agitation has been announced the metro drivers’ associations. 

Many farmers in Karnataka are against the ordinances passed by the state government on land and agricultural issues, namely the Karnataka Land Reforms (Amendment) Ordinance 2020, Karnataka Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation and Development) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020. Generally, the metro services are unaffected by such political moves and metro continues to run during such bandhs leaving exceptions.

Although there is no such notification from the metro authorities, it is clear that the services of Namma Metro will remain unaffected today.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The second pre-bid meeting for the redevelopment of New Delhi Railway Station was recently held in New Delhi. 35 national and international firms including Arabian Construction Company, Anchorage Infrastructure, Adani, GMR, I Squared Capital, JKB Infra, Kalpataru participated in the meeting.

The deadline for submission of Request for Quotation (RFQ) for the project is November 6, according to different reports. Private players are being invited for the redevelopment of an area of 5 lakh square metres at New Delhi Railway Station and another 2.6 lakh sq metres around its surroundings for commercial purposes on Design-Build Finance Operate Transfer (DBFOT) model for a concession period of 60 years.

“The redevelopment of the New Delhi Railway Station has attracted interest from leading global firms. The project aims to transform NDLS into a world-class and a one-stop destination for retail, commercial and hospitality. It will also boost real estate and ensure a cascading development of New Delhi and surrounding regions,” according to an official.

“The concessionaire will earn revenue from several components including passenger handling fees collected from passengers via ticket sales; revenue from passenger facilities within the station such as retail areas, lounges, parking, advertisement spaces, F&B; and income from the development and lease of commercial components”, a source added.

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Solar or electric-powered autorickshaws will soon start operating from metro stations in Chennai to provide commuters with an eco-friendly public transport for last-mile connectivity. The service will coexist with the present eco-friendly transport fleet of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation.

According to sources, a mobile app-based e-auto service was being planned on the lines of those recently launched. The e-auto has many safety features for passengers and is mostly driven by women. The proposal is under consideration according to the sources.”Apart from regular share autos and cabs which operate up to a specific distance from stations, CMRL operates app-based e-bikes in collaboration with two different startups across eight stations.

The service involves pick-up and drop-off hubs in and outside stations enabling commuters to book bikes through an app”, said an official.

“A four-car metro train, which runs approximately for about 400km a day, generates around 1900 kWh through the traction system. This electricity is mostly consumed by the rolling stocks (trains) on the same electrical section and the remaining is fed back to CMRL’s 33kv network. Generating its own power reduces dependency on Tangedco, which in turn can save its power generation and eventually carbon emissions”, a report added.

In addition, CMRL has solar panels of more than 5.5MW capacity installed at the stations to power lights. It also has plans to commission an 8MW solar power plant to generate more than 1.16 crore units of electricity for train and station operations and save up to 2.54 crore every year towards the purchase of electricity and also help cut down carbon emissions of up to 11,587 tonnes a year.

KARNAL (Metro Rail News): Karnal which has evolved from a sparsely populated area to a dense one is rapidly changing in terms of population. The area may be a part of the NCR region in the coming years as Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad are today. The Haryana government has proposed several new projects for the all-round development of Karnal.

The Chief Minister recently hinted at the extension of Delhi-Panipath corridor of RRTS till Karnal. The total length of the corridor will be 103 km with 17 stations, including Murthal depot station.

“If the Haryana government makes this decision, it may enhance seamless transport facilities throughout the entire area and Karnal may soon become a distance of 30-40 minutes from Delhi. The share of the Haryana government in the Delhi-Panipat RRTS corridor is around Rs 5,000 crore (16 per cent of the total cost)”, said an official related with the development.

“Karnal has good connectivity with the adjoining areas like Delhi and Chandigarh. The coming of RRTS project to the city may turn as a boon as another arm added in its infrastructural development which will benefit the region, giving a boost to rapid connectivity from other adjacent areas”, said an official. The move will help to enlarge the concept of National Capital Region and it will further help to ease up the connectivity.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detected cash amounting to Rs. 35 lakh from a passenger at Delhi’s Tagore Garden Metro Station and handed over the passenger and cash to the Income Tax officials. According to an official press release, on Thursday at about 17.30 hrs, a male passenger carrying a handbag came at the security point of Tagore Garden metro station to gain access into the metro system and placed his bag in the X-BIS machine for x-ray screening.

During the screening, a Constable of CISF noticed an image of a currency note inside the bag. He immediately stopped the passenger and informed the matter to his shift-in-charge. On questioning, the passenger revealed that he was carrying around INR 35,00,000 hard cash, but he failed to give any satisfactory reply for carrying such a huge amount of cash. Thereafter, the passenger along-with the bag containing cash was taken to Station Controller Room. He was later identified as Ajamalbhai, aged about 44 years, a resident of Nanodavas, Patan, Gujrat.

The matter was informed to Senior Officers of CISF, Delhi Metro Rail Police (DMRP), Rajouri Garden and Income Tax Officials. On arrival of Income Tax Officials, the said passenger along-with cash amounting to Rs. 35 lakh was handed over to them in presence of DMRP for further legal action in the matter.

DMRC to begin demolition of Palarivattom flyover from Monday for Reconstruction

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): Reconstruction work of Palarivattom flyover will begin on Monday as Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) Ltd held a meeting to finalise the procedures for beginning the demolition work as part of the reconstruction. ULCCS chairman Rameshan Paleri said they had a discussion with the DMRC on finalising the date for commencement of the work and it will begin on Monday.

The demolition will be held in different phases and steps will be taken to ensure a free flow of traffic through the stretch. Majority of the work will be carried out during night time and a proper action plan will be put in place when spans and pier caps are demolished. The reconstruction will be carried out as per the project report prepared by Metroman E Sreedharan. It will take eight months for the reconstruction of the flyover.

The state government has expedited the procedures for reconstruction of the flyover immediately after the Supreme Court on September 22 granted permission to demolish and rebuild the Palarivattom flyover. Following the favourable verdict, the state government decided to go by the report submitted by Sreedharan who recommended partial reconstruction rather than total demolition.

Sreedharan, who conducted a detailed inspection of the Rs 42 crore flyover that was closed for traffic just three years after its commissioning in 2016 because of major cracks, had submitted a report to the state government on July 4, 2019, on the structural stability of the flyover ruling out total demolition of the flyover and only partial reconstruction to restore it. The state government is expecting a cost of Rs 18 crore for the flyover’s partial reconstruction.

China’s fastest metro train makes debut

BEIJING: China’s fastest subway train, travelling at 160 km per hour, made its debut in southern Guangzhou city, according to a report of its official media. The subway train will be put into service at Guangzhou Metro’s No. 18 and No. 22 metro lines, which are still under construction, the report added.

The subway train will be put into service at Guangzhou Metro’s No. 18 and No. 22 metro lines, and after that, it will take around 25-30 minutes from Nansha Free Trade Zone to the South Guangzhou train station and East Guangzhou train station, respectively,according to the Chinese national media Global Times.

The two lines will extend to Guangdong’s Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Dongguan cities in the future as per the Global Times report. The Guangzhou railway authority has ordered 40 such trains to run on its No. 18 and No. 22 lines from CRRC. The first train on this route is scheduled to begin in October.

Entire rolling stock of Delhi-Meerut RRTS to be made in India

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): In a major push to Make in India, the entire rolling stock to be used for the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor will be manufactured in the country, with around 80% local content, an official of the project implementing agency has said.

Bombardier Transportation, which won the rolling stock contract for the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), will start delivering the coaches from April 2022 onwards, a year before a priority section of the project is targeted to be commissioned, Vinay Kumar Singh, managing director of National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), said.

“The contract had a provision for 75% local manufacturing, but now it has been decided that the entire rolling stock will be manufactured at Bombardier’s manufacturing unit in Savli, near Vadodara, Gujarat,” he told ET in an exclusive interaction. “The local content is more than 80% in these train sets.” The global mobility solutions giant had in May won a Rs 2,500-crore contract to supply 40 train sets for the corridor. 

Singh said these train sets would be a first of their kind where both design and construction take place in India. The first look of these train sets will be unveiled on Friday. 

NCRTC is a joint venture company of the Centre and states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, mandated to implement the RRTS project across the National Capital Region (NCR). The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is being built at a cost of Rs 30,274 crore.

Of this, 20% is borne by Centre, 3.22% by Delhi, and 16.78% by Uttar Pradesh. The rest 60% would be raised through multilateral funding. 

The transit system aims to help decongest Delhi-NCR roads and improve regional connectivity. The trains are expected to reduce travel time from Delhi to Meerut to less than an hour minutes. The expected daily ridership is estimated at 8 Lakhs.

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): A redevelopment project is underway at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Railway Station in Mumbai and on completion, it will have separate arrival and departure and be disabled-friendly, said the Union Railway Ministry Piyush Goyal on Friday. 

“The redevelopment plan encapsulates integration of various modes to make this railway station a multimodal transport hub. It will include segregation of arrival and departure, divyang (disabled) friendly station, a better level of services for passengers, energy-efficient building and restoring the heritage site as per its 1930 levels,” it stated. While the total real estate built-up area is 25 lakh square feet, the construction period is of four years.

The estimated cost of the redevelopment project is around Rs 1,642 crore. The railway station will function like a ‘city centre rail mall’ and in addition to transportation needs, daily needs will also be fulfilled to avoid unnecessary travel within the city according to an official.

“Upon redevelopment, the railway station will provide multiple access points to passengers for easy commute and direct linkage between suburban railway, harbour line, long-distance, metro rail and commercial development,” a statement said.  A pre-bid meeting was held in this regard and was attended by around 43 prospective bidders including the Adani Group, Tata Projects Ltd., Eldeco and GMR Group.

“The project will ease up the rush at the station and help to improve last mile connectivity”, said an official.

The CH2M HILL International Ltd (Jacobs Group), the master planning agency has submitted the inception report for the GIFT city. We are at the planning stage only and it is too early to judge the project. He added that the project would follow the standards of a Central Business District Model catering to the criteria prescribed by Indian Green Building Council for Gold/Platinum certification.
The businesses that are planned at GIFT City includes Indian and International knowledge-based companies, Capital Market, Asset Management, the Insurance sector, Legal, Accounting, Audit Management organisations, IT / ITES services, Research Development, Hospitality Convention and Entertainment businesses.
