Bengaluru Suburban Rail: K-RIDE Terminates the Contract with L&T for Line 2

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): The Bengaluru Suburban Rail project has encountered a delay following K-RIDE’s recent decision to re-tender the remaining civil works for Corridor 2, which stretches from Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavara. The contract for this line, originally awarded to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in 2022, has been terminated due to multiple factors affecting project execution.

In 2022, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) bagged the civil works contract for Corridor 2 of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail project. However, the project faced several delays, and L&T was unable to meet certain contractual requirements. As a result, the agreement was terminated.

L&T had stopped construction activities in March 2024, stating that the delay in acquiring the required land had caused its resources to remain idle, which led to financial losses. L&T has officially terminated the contracts for the Mallige Line and Kanka Line.

The Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project is a ₹15,767-crore project. It will create a 148-kilometre suburban rail network across four corridors to connect major residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

The Line 2, also known as the Mallige Line, will run from Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavara. The corridor covers a total distance of 24.866 km, including 7.723 km of elevated sections and 17.143 km of at-grade sections. It is an important route as it links the eastern and western parts of Bengaluru and connects with other suburban rail and metro lines, improving overall city connectivity.

On 6 October, K-RIDE announced that fresh tenders will soon be invited to complete the pending works, with the move expected to streamline construction and put the project back on track.

PM Modi Inaugurates Final Stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 3

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Mumbai Metro network achieved a major milestone as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final section of the Mumbai Metro Line 3, covering a 10.99 km stretch between Worli and Cuffe Parade. With this inauguration, the entire 33.5 km underground corridor is now open for passenger operations.

G2t96 0WwAAgwKH 1

The Mumbai Metro Line 3 project was implemented in phases and marks the city’s first fully underground metro line. Phase 1, connecting Aarey Colony to the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), began operations on 7 October 2024. This was followed by Phase 2, linking BKC to Worli, which was launched on 9 May 2025. The final stretch now seamlessly extends services up to the southern tip of Mumbai at Cuffe Parade.

Commenced in January 2017, the ambitious project took nine years to complete, with tunnelling operations concluding in November 2022. The line traverses key commercial and industrial hubs such as SEEPZ, BKC, Lower Parel, Fort, Nariman Point, and Cuffe Parade, reducing travel time between North and South Mumbai.

A crucial highlight of Line 3 is its direct connectivity to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), providing enhanced transit convenience for daily commuters.

The Mumbai Metro Line 3 was developed at an estimated cost of ₹37,276 crore and is  expected to transform urban mobility in the city. The fare structure ranges from ₹10 to ₹70, making it both accessible and affordable for a wide range of commuters.

Chennai Metro Phase 2: Tunnelling Work to Start Between Thiruvanmiyur and Indira Nagar on Line 3

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to commence one of its most complex tunnelling operations in November, as part of the ambitious Phase II expansion project. The forthcoming work involves creating twin tunnels over a 650-metre stretch between Thiruvanmiyur and Indira Nagar, considered among the most technically demanding portions of Corridor 3.

Corridor 3 spans 45.8 km from Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Adyar, including an extensive 26.8 km underground section. Once completed, the line will connect nearly 40 key locations, enhancing connectivity for commuters travelling between Madhavaram and SIPCOT.

At the Thiruvanmiyur station site, excavation has been progressing for several weeks. One tunnel boring machine (TBM) has already been lowered into position, and a second is expected to follow soon. However, engineers have run into unforeseen geological hurdles.

“We anticipated hard rock at Thiruvanmiyur but did not expect such dense, high-quality granite,” a senior CMRL official reported. “While controlled blasting was initially planned, the contractor opted instead for chemical disintegration as a safer and more precise alternative.” as reported by The Hindu.

Excavation has now reached a depth of 22 metres, but the granite formations are expected to slow progress. Normally, a short tunnel stretch such as this could be completed quickly, but officials estimate the work could take up to a year.

The official stated “If the TBM continually drills through hard rock, the cutterhead discs will wear out faster,” the official added. “Multiple cutterhead interventions to replace worn parts may be required for both machines, which will be time-consuming.”

NCRTC Expands Power Exchange Procurement to Muradnagar RSS

In a significant move towards enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring financial sustainability of India’s first Namo Bharat, NCRTC has expanded its power procurement through the Power Exchange (PTC India Ltd.) to include its drawl point at Muradnagar RSS in Uttar Pradesh, in addition to the one at Ghaziabad. This marks a progressive step in securing reliable and economical electricity for powering train operations and station infrastructure.

WhatsApp Image 2025 10 01 at 18.17.53 e63d489b

The drawl point, the Receiving Sub-Station (RSS) for Namo Bharat, serves as the interface through which electricity is drawn from the grid to support seamless train operations and commuter facilities. With both Ghaziabad and Muradnagar RSS now procuring power through exchange, NCRTC has strengthened its framework in cost-optimization and dependable power supply across the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor.

For the operations of Namo Bharat services, NCRTC requires approximately 326 million units of energy annually, amounting to a financial outgo of nearly ₹250 crore per year. Energy expenses constitute about 30–35% of NCRTC’s total operational expenditure, making power optimization a critical focus area. Procuring power through the exchange will help NCRTC cut costs, with savings of over ₹3 crore a year already expected from the Ghaziabad drawl point alone. The expansion to Muradnagar RSS is expected to add further of similar amount to this initiative.

To facilitate this arrangement, NCRTC has partnered with PTC India Ltd (formerly Power Trading Corporation of India Limited) to buy electricity through the power exchanges. This arrangement is being implemented in coordination with Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPPTCL), with which NCRTC has also signed an Connectivity agreement.

Sustainability is a key focus area of this initiative. Of the total electricity procured through the exchange, nearly 15% is targeted to be sourced from green energy annually including through exchange under Green Day Ahead Market(GDAM). This aligns with NCRTC’s broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions and advancing clean energy adoption as part of its vision for modern, eco-friendly regional mobility.

As the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor is being commissioned in phases, power procurement through the exchange will also be progressively scaled to cover other drawl points in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Currently, 55 km of the corridor with 11 stations is operational, with the remaining sections scheduled for commissioning soon.

Through this expansion of exchange-based procurement, NCRTC continues to reinforce its focus on sustainable transportation, operational efficiency, and long-term economic viability, delivering reliable and affordable power for India’s first Namo Bharat.
