Namma Metro Phase II estimated cost increased, to now cost Rs 36,695 crores 

BANGALORE (Metro Rail News): The cost of Phase II of the Namma Metro project which is under construction has increased by Rs 4,290 crore. The BMRCL had estimated that the completion of the project would cost ₹26,405 crores for 72-km network but now, the cost has increased upto Rs 30,695 crores. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) revealed this information while giving a reply to the questions raised by Rajya Sabha member G.C. Chandrashekar.

BMRCL said that the compensation paid towards the acquisition of land is the reason due to which the cost has increased. The land acquisition cost is entirely borne by the Karnataka Government as per the ministry’s reply.

The reply also states that as of February 2022, the physical and financial progress of the project is 63.5% and 65.24%, respectively and out of the 72 km metro line, 13.65 km has become operational. The reply mentioned that “Phase II of the project is delayed due to delay in land acquisition, execution of contracts, permission for tree removal, and COVID-19 pandemic”.

According to the sources the ongoing Phase II project which includes the construction of two metro lines from R.V. Road to Bommasandra and Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara — 12,88, 206 sq. metres of the land was identified, out of which 12,77,433 sq. metres of the land has been acquired. The BMRCL has already spent a ₹6,495 crore towards the payment of compensation to the landowners.

An official said, “In 2011, it was estimated that land acquisition would cost ₹2,100 crore. Land acquisition for the project started in a phased manner in 2015. There are various factors for the rise in land acquisition costs, including the implementation of Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013; increased guidance value over the years; revision in the extension of land required for the project; widening of the road near metro alignment; and delay in acquisition of land due to litigations.” 

Rail Vikas Nigam signs MoU with ICF for Kolkata Metro Railway project

KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for acquiring metro coaches for Kolkata Metro Railway project.

The MoU is for the manufacture and acquisition of 296 numbers of communication-based train control system compliant metro coaches for the Kolkata Metro Railway project, which is currently under execution by RVNL.

RVNL handles the business of executing all types of railway projects which include new lines, doubling, gauge conversion, railway electrification, metro projects, workshops, major bridges, construction of cable stayed bridges, institution buildings etc. As of 31 December 2021, the Government held a 78.2% stake in the company.

The company’s consolidated net profit rose 4.3% to Rs 293.01 crore on a 35.3% jump in net sales to Rs 5,049.

Paytm bags automated fare collection system contract for Delhi-Meerut RRTS

DELHI (Metro Rail News): National Capital Region Transport Corporation Limited (NCRTC) has awarded Paytm Payments Bank Ltd. the 82.15 km Delhi – Meerut RRTS Line‘s Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system (Package 26B) in March. Paytm will be the financial partner for this RRTS Line. The RRTS will allow QR Code based ticketing (digital QR & paper QR) and EVM (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) open-loop contactless card ticketing based on NCMC (National Common Mobility Card) standards via a contactless bank card, phone or smartcard.

The passengers will have the option to use QR code tickets which can be bought at each station’s ticket vending machines, ticketing booth or generated digitally on NCRTC’s mobile app or website. Business Class riders have to validate twice which means once at the concourse level and the second on the platform level for access to the executive lounge for boarding the trains’ Business Class coach.

The tenders for this package were invited in October 2021 by NCRTC under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) which is the first of its kind for AFCs in India where NCRTC has appointed a systems integrator (Package 26A) and financial institution (Package 26B) to issue and receive services.

Technical bids for package 26B were opened in January 2022 in which only 2 bidders were present that are Paytm Payments Bank and State Bank of India (SBI). Paytm presented a premium of 0.06% below the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charge and other charges making them the winner.

The scope of this package is the selection of Financial Institution (FI) for Issuance of Open Loop National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) And Acquiring Services for Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor Of NCRTC. Paytm will work with Datamatics Global Services – AEP Ticketing Solutions (DM-AEP-26A JV) – the winner of the AFC contract’s systems work (Package 26A).

DMRC to introduce highly advanced baggage scanners at metro stations

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has taken a decision to install new highly advanced baggage scanners at metro stations. The decision has being taken to enhance the safety at metro stations which will also provide security to passengers. These advanced bag scanners will provide extra safety and security to passengers with their advanced features.

According to DMRC, it will be more convenient for passengers to lift and put heavy items for scanning. In phase-1 34 new high-tech baggage scanners have already been installed at interchanging stations that record, high traffic, such as AIIMS, Huda City Centre, Kashmere Gate, Rajouri Garden, Vishwavidyalaya, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Palam, and Noida Sector-18 etc. 250 more such scanners will be installed across all Delhi Metro stations, the officials said.

As per DMRC officials, the new baggage scanners can scan 550 bags per hour whereas the old scanners could only scan 350 bags in an hour. Therefore it will help in faster baggage clearance. The officials also informed that the speed of the conveyor belt for the new baggage scanners has been increased from 18 cm per second to 30 cm per second, which will reduce the heavy passenger rush at checking points during peak hours.

The new baggage scanners come with better X-ray penetration of up to 35mm thick steel plates which will help in improving security surveillance systems at entry points of metro stations. Any kind of explosives or arms threat will be easily recognizable by the CISF on the large monitors with high-resolution images.

The new machines will also have an inclined input/output conveyor belt system with continuous audio-visual monitoring. The scanners will have 360 degrees camera installed above it that will prevent theft and arguments between commuters, security staff or others. The baggage scanning machines include supporting features like charging ports for wireless sets, hand-held metal detectors, etc., provisions of water bottle hanger, multi-utility movable rack for placing uniforms and other essential items, the officials said. Presently there are 400 X-BIS machines installed at Delhi metro stations.

Madurai Metro feasibility report to be ready by May this year

MADURAI (Metro Rail News): The feasibility report for the mass rapid transit system (MRTS) in Madurai city is expected to be ready by May this year. RM Krishnan, the chief general manager (planning and business development) of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) stated this in his reply to Madurai MP Su Venkatesan in January in regards to the implementation of the MRTS in the city.

Krishnan said that the Tamil Nadu government has already granted approval to conduct the feasibility study report for implementation of suitable MRTS in tier two cities including Madurai, Trichy, Tirunelveli and Salem.

He added that M/s Balaji Rail Road Systems Private Limited who were awarded the tender as consultant is expected to complete the report by this May.

Forest department permits DMRC to remove 3,000 trees for Delhi Metro’s Phase 4

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Forest Department has permitted the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to remove or transplant 2,940 trees in the North Forest Division, and 450 trees in the South Forest Division. More than 3,000 trees will be transplanted or removed for the Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 line from Janakpuri West to R.K. Ashram, which will cover a distance of 29.26 km and have 22 stations.

The permission has been given by the Deputy Conservator of Forest (North) under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994. Of the total 2,940 trees in the North division, 1,963 will be transplanted, while 977 will be cut down.

The trees will give way for the metro line between Janakpuri West and Mukarba Chowk, and Mukarba Chowk to Derawal Nagar.

As per the Forest Department order, the trees will be transplanted to a park at Haiderpur and to the portion near the Outer Ring Road.

The Deputy Conservator of Forest (South) has also granted permission for the removal of 450 trees for the Khanpur to Sangam Vihar section of the proposed 23.6-km long metro line between Aerocity and Tughlakabad. However, 30,000 saplings will also be planted as a compensatory plantation on the Yamuna floodplains. A total of 20,000 saplings will be planted between the ITO bridge and NH-24, and another 10,000 saplings between Geeta Colony Bridge and Shantivan Drain.

ABB to set up traction motors unit in Vadodara, eyes on growing Metrorail market

GUJARAT (Metro Rail News): ABB India has started the process of setting up a dedicated unit for manufacturing 1,500 traction motors which will provide crucial propulsion to metros and other locomotives, in Vadodara. The company has taken this decision eyeing the growing metro rail market in India.

“We already have three units within our campus in Vadodara. We will be adding two more units, one of which will be for manufacturing traction motors that are used in metros and other locomotives. The plant is under construction and we are installing the machinery,” said Sanjeev Sharma, country head and MD, ABB during his visit to Vadodara on Friday.

ABB India’s largest manufacturing unit in Vadodara presently manufactures digital substation products, turbochargers, motors and generators.

“We will be setting up a fifth unit which will be a service unit. Over a period of time, we have developed a strong base in Gujarat. We have a lot of equipment installed in Hazira, Surat, and Jamnagar.

“We make the traction motors here. The traction converters come from Bengaluru. In 2012, we had supplied 2,000 traction motors to Delhi Metro. After that, there was a gap and now again we have started supplying these motors from Maneja that are part of locomotives being supplied by Bombardier,” the official added.

As per the data presented in Lok Sabha, 754 km of the metro rail network is operational in country and various metro projects are at different stages of construction or have been proposed in cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Kanpur, Agra, Patna, Surat, etc.

Siemens bags Delhi Metro Phase 4’s Electrification contract

DELHI (Metro Rail News): Siemens Ltd. on 6th April has emerged as the lowest bidder for the 25 kV AC OHE traction contract of the 38.235 km Magenta Line’s new 2.03 km underground extension between Janakpuri West and Krishna Park Extension.

Previously Alstom Transport had won this tender for the 65.1 km Delhi Metro Phase 4 project in June 2021, but their bid was rejected because it was higher than the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)’s estimate.

NHRCL adopts new construction technique for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHRCL) has adopted a new and advanced construction technique, the Full Span Launching Method (FSLM) in order to speed up the construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project. A straddle carrier is used to handle the Full Span Precast Box Girders.

NHRCL is using heavy equipment and machinery to speed up the bullet train construction process which is used for the first time in the country. The tyre-mounted self-propelled Straddle Carrier weighs approx. 620 MT and has a lifting capacity of 1100MT.

The Straddle Carrier lifts the girder from the casting bed and transports it to the stacking yard. After that, it feeds the girder from stacking yard to bridge gantry for erection over piers. NHRCL has erected the 40 metre full span box girder weighing around 970 MT, involving 42 MT of steel, in November 2021. It is also the heaviest pre-stressed concrete box girder in the country’s construction industry.

It is for the first time, that a girder transporter is deployed for accelerating the construction process. The girder transporter, a 27 axle tyre-mounted (i.e.216 numbers of wheels) self-propelled trolley, has a carrying capacity of 1100MT. Girder transporter weighs around 390 MT.

As per NHRCL, the girder transporter is used to transport precast girders (40 m span) over the already erected girders and it feeds the girders to the launching gantry for erection over the piers. Launching gantry weighs approx. 540 MT and handling capacity of 1100 MTThe 508 km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor will include 12 stations on its route and reduce the travel time between the two major cities to around three hours, including halts at all stations. Once ready for service, this train will operate at a speed of 320 km per hour.

Alstom gets contract for 25 high-speed Zefiro Express trains in Sweden

SWEDEN (Metro Rail News): Alstom, the french rolling stock company has won a 650m euros contract from Swedish national rail operator SJ to deliver 25 Zefiro Express electric high-speed trains. The contract also includes an option to supply additional 15 trains. These high-speed trains are estimated to be delivered in 2026. Zefiro Express trains can run at a top speed of 250km/h and are designed to function in extreme weather conditions such as temperatures below -40 degrees.

Zefiro Express will have 363 seats and comprises carriage width, electrical systems, and signalling systems that support operations both in Sweden and Denmark. Alstom Nordics managing director Rob Whyte said,” “Alstom is immensely proud to be delivering these new high-speed trains to SJ.”

“This is a historic agreement that will change the way passengers travel across the country. With concerns about climate change, high-speed rail is the primary alternative to air travel. It’s comfortable, convenient, and now very fast”, he added.

The Zefiro Express is part of Alstom’s Avelia platform. Meanwhile, Alstom collaborated with Engie to replace diesel-powered locomotives with hydrogen versions for European rail freight. According to the agreement, Alstom will develop a hydrogen solution based on a high-power fuel cell system, which can drive electric locomotives on non-electrified sections.

Centre requests Maharashtra govt to think over on moving Metro depot to Kanjurmarg

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The central government has asked the Maharashtra government to think over its decision of moving the Metro Depot from Aarey Colony to Kanjurmarg. The ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) in its letter on 17th March has mentioned the reports conducted by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and SYSTRA which was appointed by MMRDA. The reports point out technical difficulties in daily operation of Metro 3 and 6 lines if the car depot is shifted from Aarey to Kanjurmarg. The MoHUA mentioned that it would not be a good decision to shift the location of car depot because the project has reached on advanced stage.

“In this background and findings in the DMRC report, the Government of Maharashtra is requested to rethink their decision to shift the Depot of Line 3 from Aarey Colony to Kanjurmarg. GoM is requested to allow restart of the depot work of Line 3 at Aarey Colony for expeditious completion of the project of public interest with due exploration of possible optimization in the present plans of Depot at Aarey itself. The project is already inordinately delayed and it is expected that there will be further delay in the project if uncertainties continue. This project is much awaited to solve the traffic problem of Mumbaikars to a considerable extent,” states the letter written by Sunil Kumar, under secretary, MoHUA.

DMRC has recorded their own experience that inducting trains from the depot consistently at a frequency of four minutes continuously for three or more hours is a challenging task. There is a compromised time of maintenance window due to running of Line 3 trains for 7.5 km on Line 6 network upto Kanjurmarg. This will have a bad impact on restoration time in case of failure of Line 3 trains during the regulation operation period.

“DMRC and SYSTRA both agree that the above constraints are inherited with the integrated depot for the present respective layout of two given Line 3 and Line 6. Ideally, lines should be catered with individual depots. As MRTS projects are massive projects in terms of cost, infrastructure and impact, decisions should be taken duly considering long term viability and sustainability. As analysed by SYSTRA integration of Line 3 and Line 6 is feasible with above listed constraints.

The letter also mentioned that the land at Aarey is sufficient and to meet the current as well as design life traffic requirements up to the year 2055, it would not be advisable to shift the location of the depot to Kanjurmarg. Also, the land at Aarey is free from all the encumbrances whereas the land at Kanjurmarg is under multiple litigations.

India’s first Underwater metro tunnel in Kolkata to be functional by 2023

KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): India’s first underwater tunnel in Kolkata which is constructed under the Hooghly river is ongoing and is estimated to be functional by 2023. This Metro will provide connectivity between Howrah and Kolkata.

The Metro corridor is a 16.6-km-long east-west stretch in which 520 metres will be under the river bed.

Mithun Ghosh, the Site Supervisor said that there will be walkways in the tunnels for evacuation of passengers in case of emergency, ANI reported. “Important Passage work has also been done keeping in mind that if a technical problem arises inside the water tunnel area, passengers can be taken out through the special passage,” he added.

Ghosh also said that almost 80 percent of the work of the East-west Howrah Metro station is completed and full service is estimated to start in 2023. “The station is being built under the Hooghly river at a depth of 33 meters. 80 per cent of work has been completed while 20 per cent is yet to be finished. It will start functioning by 2023,” Ghosh said.
