This project’s constructural work is estimated at ₹450 crore and spread over 60 acres. This project is going to extend the total number of platforms from 8 to 14 and platform lines to 11 to 16. All new platforms will have ballastless tracks, while existing Platforms 3, 5, and 6 are being widened, also two new G+2 station buildings spanning over 200 metres are going to be connected by a massive 72-metre-wide and 205-metre-long Air Concourse.
This project is targeted to be completed by the end of 2028, efforts are constantly being made to speed up this project without compromising safety, quality and passenger service.
Congestion Relief and Construction Progress
The station currently has eight operational platforms, which can cause traffic congestion amidst peak hours, to access maintenance tracks incoming and outgoing trains have to cross paths and they frequently hit signal bottlenecks. This forces trains to stop on the outskirts for 20 minutes or more while waiting for clearance. Changing the engines of the train is also time consuming because of less space. The redevelopment is being done as an initiative to stop these delays, the extension of 14 platforms is going to stop the waiting time outside and improve movement of trains, also dedicated rail engines are being prepared in case of urgent swaps ensuring smoother operations and faster movement of trains.
Construction work is progressing gradually, while additional spaces are under development, temporary parkings zones on the west (4,000 sq. m) and east (5,860 sq. m) are working. Structural steel to be used for the North Foot bridge has arrived. Excavation for platform walls from platforms 10 to 14 has been completed. First-floor staging for the western building and slab completions at the Passenger Reservation Building has also successfully been completed.
