BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the elevated section of the Bengaluru Metro’s Pink Line on 13th November. This will take the total length of the operational metro network in the city past the 100 km mark to 103.6 km. It will significantly improve connectivity in south Bengaluru and will be the completion of a key part of the 21.26-km corridor.
According to official sources, PM Modi is expected to flag off the 7.5 km elevated section at a location yet to be finalised on Bannerghatta Road. He is also likely to travel on the line prior to heading off to Mysuru for a public event.
Bengaluru South MP L.S. Tejasvi Surya confirmed the November 13 inauguration date in a post on X. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would travel from Tavarekere to IIMB-Bilekahalli station as part of the launch programme.
Bengaluru Metro Pink Line to connect kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere
The elevated section will connect Kalena Agrahara with Tavarekere and forms part of the Bengaluru Metro Pink Line, which will eventually run for 21.26 km between Kalena Agrahara in south Bengaluru and Nagawara in the north. With the 7.5-km section of the Pink Line becoming operational, Bengaluru Metro’s total operational network will increase from 96.1 km to 103.6 km. It will also become the country’s second-largest metro network after Delhi, based on the operational route length.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is also planning to deploy five to six trains on the elevated section. According to the Deccan Herald report, A senior official also indicated that the peak-hour frequency would be around six to 10 minutes. However, BMRCL has not yet confirmed whether passenger services will begin on November 13 or the following day. The final decision on the public opening schedule remains pending.
Bengaluru Metro Pink Line completion follows years of delays
Bengaluru Metro’s Pink Line has faced significant delays and cost increases since its planning stage. The 21.26-km Pink corridor was initially estimated at ₹8,730 crore, with completion targeted for March 2016. However, construction began only in 2020, by which time the project estimate cost had increased to ₹17,346 crore.
There are several factors involved that contributed to the delay and cost escalation, which includes tendering issues, administrative clearances, complex underground construction, rising material prices and cost of land acquisition.
The Pink Line corridor comprises elevated and underground sections. While the upcoming inauguration covers the elevated stretch, the remaining underground section will complete the connection to Nagawara. The wider Bengaluru Metro Phase II programme has also seen its estimated cost rise from ₹30,695 crore to ₹40,425 crore, reflecting the financial and execution challenges facing the city’s metro expansion.
Bengaluru Metro crosses the 100-km mark
The Pink Line opening will take Bengaluru Metro beyond the 100-km milestone, adding another major corridor to its operational network. The city had around 7 km of operational metro in 2014, according to Tejasvi Surya, and has since expanded its network through successive phases. The new section is expected to improve access to areas along Bannerghatta Road and provide metro connectivity to important destinations in south Bengaluru, including the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore area.
The elevated Pink Line section will expand Bengaluru’s operational metro network and offer another public transport option in the city’s southern areas. However, the corridor will become fully operational only after the remaining underground section is completed and commissioned. The recent cost increases and project delays also highlight the need for better planning, timely execution and stronger monitoring.
