PUNE (Metro Rail News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Pune Metro’s 23-km Line 3 and laid the foundation stone for four new corridors under Phase II, with the combined projects valued at around ₹21,800 crore. The developments will expand the city’s metro network and improve links between major IT, commercial and residential hubs.

The programme was held at the badminton court of the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune on Tuesday, November 3. Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar attended the event. PM Modi joined this event through video conferencing.

Pune Metro Line 3 opens between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar

PM Modi inaugurated Pune Metro Line 3, also known as the Pink Line, which has been developed at a cost of more than ₹8,300 crore. The approximately 23-km corridor connects Maan with the District Court Metro station, linking the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar.

The line is expected to improve access to Hinjewadi, one of Pune’s major employment centres, and provide an alternative to road travel for IT professionals and other commuters. It will also connect with the existing metro network, allowing passengers to reach other parts of the city through interchange stations.

The new corridor is expected to help reduce dependence on private vehicles and ease traffic pressure on roads connecting Hinjewadi and central Pune.

₹13,500 cr Pune Metro Phase II gets foundation stone

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for Pune Metro Phase II, estimated to cost around ₹13,500 crore. The expansion includes four corridors: Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A.

The proposed network will extend metro connectivity to several major locations, including Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Pune Cantonment, Warje, Nanded City and Manik Baug. The four corridors include:

Corridor Route Length
Line 2AVanaz-Chandni ChowkPart of the combined 12.75 km
Line 2BRamwadi-VitthalwadiPart of combined 12.75 km
Line 4Kharadi-Khadakwasla25.52 km
Line 4ANal stop-Manik Baug6.12 km

Pune Metro Lines 2A and 2B will together cover around 12.75 km, extending the existing east-west metro network. The Ramwadi-Vitthalwadi extension will improve access to growing residential, commercial and IT areas around Kharadi and Wagholi. Pune Metro’s Line 4 will connect Kharadi with Khadakwasla over approximately 25.52 km. Line 4A will add a 6.12-km link between Nal Stop and Manik Baug.

Interchange links to connect Pune Metro with bus network

Pune Metro Phase II corridors will include interchange facilities at Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass. These points are intended to connect the expanded metro network with existing Pune Metro services and intercity bus transport. The proposed connections will help passengers transfer between corridors and access key destinations across the city without relying entirely on road-based transport.

The inauguration of Pune Metro Line 3 and the launch of Phase II mark two major developments in Pune’s metro expansion. The immediate benefit will depend on the integration of Line 3 with the operational network, while the longer-term impact will hinge on timely execution of the four proposed corridors.
