1st Section of Kochi Metro Phase 2 to be Operational by June 2026

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): Despite the delays, the construction works of Kochi Metro Phase 2 are progressing at a steady pace. Kochi Metro Phase 2 includes an 11.2 km long new metro line (Pink Line) connecting JLN Stadium – Infopark II.

The construction of Pink Line is being executed by Afcons Infrastructure at Rs 1141.32 crore. According to Shri Loknath Behera, Managing Director of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the project is being implemented in two phases. The initial phase covers the first five stations of the proposed corridor connecting JLN Stadium to Kakkanad and is scheduled for completion by June 30, 2026. The remaining five stations will be developed in the second phase, with a target completion by December 2026.

Shri Loknath Behera, Managing Director of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), attributed the delay primarily to heavy monsoon rains and challenges in relocating underground pipelines along the alignment.

The Government of India accorded “In principle approval for the Phase-II of the Kochi Metro Rail Project from JLN Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad at the cost of Rs. 1957.05 crore.

Hon’ble Prime Minister laid the Foundation stone of Phase-II of the Kochi Metro Rail project on 01 September 2022 in the presence of Hon’ble Governor and Chief Minister.

A key highlight of Phase-II of the Kochi Metro Rail corridor is its focus on multimodal integrationT he metro alignment will be strategically integrated with the city’s bus transport system, the Kochi Water Metro, and the public bicycle-sharing network. 

This strategic expansion is expected to enhance urban mobility in Kochi, particularly by improving connectivity to Kakkanad, a rapidly growing IT and administrative hub. Once operational, the Pink Line will play a vital role in decongesting traffic and providing efficient, eco-friendly transit options for daily commuters.

TuTr Hyperloop & BEML Sign MoU to Develop Hyperloop Technology in India

TuTr Hyperloop Private Limited, a technology startup formed at IIT Madras, has entered into a partnership with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, to develop hyperloop technology in India jointly.

The MoU was signed by Lingaraj V. Viraktamath, Head of Corporate Technology Planning & Alliance Management at BEML, and Aravind S. Bharadwaj, Director & CEO of TuTr Hyperloop. 

According to PTI, BEML will serve as the principal manufacturing partner for TuTr Hyperloop. This collaboration is aimed at developing a prototype pod that can transport passengers and cargo at high velocities.

“This partnership is a step forward for India’s efforts in high-speed transportation,” said Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director, BEML. “It aligns with the goals of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Atmanirbhar Bharat by supporting transport systems built with Indian engineering and manufacturing,” as reported by ET Infra. 

The Hyperloop is an advanced mode of transportation which is designed to reduce travel time between cities. At its core, the system involves passenger or cargo pods that move through low-pressure tubes at incredibly high speeds, enabled by magnetic levitation (maglev) and electric propulsion.

This concept was first introduced in 2013 by Elon Musk, who published a white paper outlining the technical feasibility and potential advantages of such a system. Since then, several private companies and research institutions have been working to transform this vision into reality. 

However, the Hyperloop is still in the experimental stage, and numerous challenges remain. These include infrastructure development, regulatory approvals, passenger safety, and the economic feasibility of large-scale deployment.

Titagarh to Manufacture Rolling Stock for Mumbai Metro Line 6

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Titagarh Rail Systems Limited has received a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from NCC for the rolling stock contract worth Rs 1,598.55 crore for Line 6 of the Mumbai Metro.  Metro Line-6 spans 15.31 km between Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli (EEH).

Titagarh Rail Systems will be responsible for the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of rolling stock for Mumbai Metro Line 6. The contract also includes 5 years of comprehensive maintenance, following a two-year defect liability maintenance period.

NCC has subcontracted the rolling stock part of the Package 1-CA-232 to Titagarh. NCC bagged Package 1-CA-232  from Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in July 2025. To know more about this News: Click Here.

BANGALORE (Metro Rail News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the much-awaited Yellow Line of Bangalore Metro, which spans 19.15 km between R.V. Road and Bommasandra on 10 August. Additionally, PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the 44.65-km Phase-3 expansion of the Bengaluru Metro on the same day. 

Union Minister for Home and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar said, “I am pleased to announce that the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India has kindly agreed to inaugurate the Yellow Line and lay the foundation stone for Phase-3 on August 10,” as reported by The Indian Express.

This development came after the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) gave the statutory safety clearance to the Yellow Line of Bangalore Metro. This approval paves the way for the commercial operation on the Yellow Line. To know more about this, Click Here. 

The Phase 3 expansion of Namma Metro aims to enhance connectivity in western Bengaluru through the addition of two elevated routes, totalling 44.65 km in length.

The Yellow Line and Phase-3 projects are projected to benefit approximately 2.5 million commuters in the southern region of the city, thereby improving overall urban mobility in Bangalore.

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Balaji Railroad Systems (BARSYL) has received a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for preparing detailed feasibility reports (DFRs) for 3 different routes of new Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) lines proposed in Tamil Nadu. 

In April, CMRL floated a tender for this contract with a 180 completion deadline. Technical bids for the contract were opened on 16 May. Furthermore, financial bids were opened on June 20, revealing that BARSYL is the lowest bidder for the contract.

CMRL has engaged Balaji Railroad Systems as the Feasibility Study Consultant for the 3 different routes proposed for new semi-high-speed rail lines in Tamil Nadu. The routes have been mentioned below:

GURUGRAM (Metro Rail News): Dilip Buildcon Limited (DBL)- Ranjit Buildcon Limited (RBL) JV has been declared as the lowest bidder for the civil construction contract of the initial section of the new Gurugram Metro Line. This section will extend between Millennium City Centre and Sector 9.

The awarded contractor will be responsible for the construction of 14 elevated stations, a 13.197 km viaduct, a 1.85 km spur to Dwarka Expressway, and the ramp to Sector 33 Depot

GMRL Brief Scope: Construction of Viaduct and 14 Elevated Stations from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9 (inclusive) from chainage (-)594 m to 12603 m, Spur to Dwarka Expressway (1.85 km) and ramp to Depot at Sector 33 excluding PEB and Architectural finishing works of Gurugram Metro Corridor between Millennium City Centre and Cyber City (26.65 Km) and Spur from Basai Village to Dwarka Expressway (1.85 Km) with total 27 Stations.

Gurugram Metro’s New Corridor: The Gurugram Metro’s new corridor will span a total length of 28.8 km, establishing connectivity between HUDA City Centre and Cyber City (Moulsari Avenue). This corridor will feature 27 stations strategically located along its route.

Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line Receives CMRS Approval for Operations

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): The much-anticipated Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro Project has achieved a major milestone with the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) granting statutory safety clearance. This approval paves the way for the commencement of operations along the 19.15 km corridor, which links R.V. Road in the north to Bommasandra in the south.

However, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) must first address the conditions outlined by the CMRS during the inspection. These conditions pertain to various technical and safety aspects that must be rectified or fulfilled before commercial operations can commence. Once these requirements are met, BMRCL will submit a compliance report to the CMRS. Only after this final approval will the Yellow Line be opened for public use.

The CMRS inspection for the Yellow Line was conducted in July 2025 under the leadership of Shri A.M. Chowdhary, Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety. During the inspection, all critical systems, including traction systems, signalling, track infrastructure, viaducts, and the Passenger Information System (PIS) were thoroughly examined to ensure operational readiness and safety compliance. The inauguration of the Yellow Line is likely to take place on 15 August 2025, coinciding with the 79th Independence Day celebrations. However, the official launch date for commercial operations is yet to be formally announced.

The Yellow Line of Namma Metro faced delays primarily due to the unavailability of rolling stock. So far, Titagarh Rail Systems has delivered three trainsets, while one prototype trainset was supplied earlier by CRRC.

To begin with, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) plans to start operations with four trainsets, ensuring the line becomes operational without further delay.

SKM Contractor Receives LoA for Ticket Vending Services Contract of Delhi Metro

DELHI (Metro Rail News): Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has issued a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) to SKM Contractor and Services Private Limited for the ticket vending services contract for various stations of Delhi Metro.

DMRC invited bids for this contract with a 1460-day deadline. On 7 April 2025, technical bids were opened, revealing that 9 firms had submitted bids for the contract. Technical evaluation of the submitted bids took place on 17 June. However, during the technical evaluation round, the bids of 7 firms were rejected. 

The financial bids were also opened on 17 June, 2025, and the financial evaluation took place on August 1, 2025. On the same day,  SKM Contractor and Services Private Limited was awarded the contract and received the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from the DMRC.

Contract Duration: 1460 days 

DMRC Brief Scope: Provision of Ticket Vending Services at Various Metro Stations of Line- 8 Extension, 10 and Other Locations.

Alstom Receives LoA for Train Maintenance Contract of Delhi Metro

DELHI (Metro Rail News): Alstom Transport India Limited has received a Letter of Acceptance ( LoA) from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the 10-year train maintenance contract of the Delhi Metro Rail Project.

DMRC invited bids for this contract with a 3650-day deadline. On 21 February 2025, technical bids were opened, revealing that four firms had submitted bids for the contract. The technical evaluation of the submitted bids took place on 9 July 2025. However, during the technical evaluation round, 2 firms’ bids were rejected. 

The financial bids were also opened on July 9, 2025, and the financial evaluation took place on August 1, 2025. On the same day, Alstom was awarded the contract and received the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from the DMRC.

MRTS-CMRL Merger Receives ‘in principle’ Approval From Railways

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): The long-discussed integration of Chennai’s Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) with the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) network is expected to move forward, as the Railway Board has given an ‘in-principle’ nod to the proposal. While a formal approval is still pending.

Responding to a query in Parliament by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed that the Indian Railways and the Tamil Nadu government have collaboratively developed the foundational principles for signing a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the MRTS-CMRL merger. However, he emphasised that the operational integration would depend on resolving critical issues related to train operations, asset maintenance, and safety.

The plan to hand over MRTS operations to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) had been temporarily stalled, awaiting the completion of the fourth railway line between Chennai Beach and Chennai Egmore. Sanctioned in March 2022 at an estimated cost of ₹279.8 crore, this crucial infrastructure project was successfully commissioned earlier this year, potentially opening the way for progress on the merger proposal.

Chennai MRTS is managed by Southern Railway. Its last section, spanning 5km, faced delays. A Part of the Chennai Metro Phase 2 line from Sholinganallur to Porur via St. Thomas Mount is now being built above the existing MRTS elevated. In October 2023, Southern Railway conducted a massive operation to install girders linking MRTS to the St. Thomas Mount Metro station. However, in January 2024, a collapse of the final girder near Thillai Ganga Nagar subway occurred, which led to further delays. The faulty girder was finally installed in June 2025, clearing the path for final construction works. However, coordination is required between Southern Railway and CMRL to install girders over St. Thomas Mount station tracks.

Once implemented, the merger is expected to streamline operations, improve the commuter experience, and enhance multi-modal connectivity across the city.
