Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Approves 2 New Railway Projects

0

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two major railway projects worth approximately Rs 2,781 crore.

The approved projects are:

  • Devbhumi Dwarka (Okha) to Kanalus Doubling (141 km)
  • Badlapur to Karjat 3rd and 4th line expansion (32 km)

These initiatives are part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on enhancing multi-modal connectivity and logistic efficiency through integrated planning and stakeholder engagement. Together, these projects will boost seamless movement of people, goods, and services.

Spanning four districts across Maharashtra and Gujarat, the projects will add around 224 km to the Indian Railways network. The multi-tracking work will improve connectivity to approximately 585 villages with a combined population of about 32 lakh.

The doubling of the Kanalus to Okha line will strengthen access to the Dwarkadhish temple, a major pilgrimage center, promoting comprehensive development in the Saurashtra region. Meanwhile, the Badlapur to Karjat expansion, part of the Mumbai suburban corridor, will enhance suburban connectivity and accommodate growing passenger demand, also improving links to Southern India.

Ramesh (Project Director), Thiru. Natthapong Katkaew (Project Manager), and General Consultant representatives Thiru. Tony Burchell (Team Leader) & Thiru. TBM S97 “Mullai,” successfully achieved a breakthrough from Kolathur Ramp to Kolathur Station. The tunnel drive, which began on 23rd May 2025, covered a bored tunnel length of 246 meters. Key challenges during this operation included a very low overburden of just 1.8 meters, a steep gradient of -3.8%, and the need for extensive ground protection in a densely trafficked area.

Simultaneously, – TBM S120 “Kurinji” was launched from Kolathur Station towards Srinivasa Nagar. This tunnel drive, spanning 1060 meters between Kolathur and Srinivasa Nagar stations, passes through Grade-4 and Grade-5 rocky strata and includes a sharp 230-meter curve.

DMRC Completes Tunneling Work Under Red Line at Pulbangash

0

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved a remarkable engineering milestone in its Phase 4 expansion by successfully constructing an underground tunnel beneath the existing Red Line at Pulbangash. This tunnel is part of the Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg extension on the Magenta Line.

This tunnelling work between the Pulbangash and Sadar Bazar stations was especially challenging, as trains on the busy Red Line above were not halted for even a single day, even as the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) carefully constructed the tunnel below the elevated viaduct on which trains were operational.

Moreover, the Red Line viaduct here stands on open foundations with a balanced cantilever span. Tunnelling beneath such a structure required extraordinary engineering precautions to ensure its safety.

A number of measures were taken by DMRC’s engineers to achieve this feat. A detailed strategy was adopted to strengthen the area around the pier of the Red Line. A grouting programme called TAM (Tube-a-Manchette) was implemented. As per this technology, 180 TAM boreholes were arranged around the pier. After that, high-strength cement grouting was done to stabilise the soil, fill the voids and in the process, increase the load-bearing capacity. In addition, it was also ensured that all possibilities of settlement of soil during tunnelling were eliminated.

The construction of the downline tunnel on this section has now been completed. Work on the up-line tunnel is in progress with the same level of precautions and monitoring.  This was an extremely critical construction work since the Red Line, on average, carries about seven lakh passengers every day. Any disruption to the movement of trains on this line would have caused tremendous inconvenience to the people.

South Central Railway Submits Final Alignment for Hyderabad-Chennai High-Speed Rail Project

High-Speed Rail
Survey Begins for High-Speed Rail Corridor Between Delhi and Amritsar ( Representative Image only)

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): The 778-km Hyderabad-Chennai high-speed rail project has gained momentum as the South Central Railway submitted the final alignment, which will be incorporated in the detailed project report, to the government of Tamil Nadu. Following the approval of the state government, the DRP for this high-speed rail corridor will be finalised.

The alignment of this corridor has been revised, which was suggested by the government of Tamil Nadu. The revision was made to include a station at Tirupati.

This high-speed rail corridor will reduce the travel time from a 12-hour journey to around 2 hours and 20 minutes. To facilitate transit-oriented development and create commercial hubs, the Indian Railway has requested 50 acres of land around each station.

The South Central Railway has urged the state transport department to finalise the alignment and provide approval for land acquisition at the earliest. In addition to this, SCR has suggested that the state transport department shall include this high-speed rail corridor in Tamil Nadu’s long-term infrastructure master plan.

The project features a complex underground tunnel in Tamil Nadu. It will span about 11.6km and require meticulous planning and thorough geotechnical investigation to identify the construction methods. The alignment of this corridor has been decided as per the surveys conducted by RITES. This corridor reflects India’s efforts to establish high-speed rail networks beyond MAHSR.

AHMEDABAD (Metro Rail News): Adani Enterprises Ltd. has received a LoA from National Highways Logistics Management Ltd. (NHLML) for the construction of the ropeway system between Sonprayag and Kedarnath. The project will be carried out by the Roads, Metro, Rail, and Water (RMRW) division of AEL.

Adani Enterprises Ltd. (AEL) plans to invest ₹4,081 crore in developing the ropeway between Sonprayag and Kedarnath. The proposed alignment spans 12.9 km and is intended to replace the existing long and difficult trek, which will reduce travel time to about 36 minutes. The system is being designed to handle a passenger flow of 1,800 persons per hour in each direction.

The ropeway is being developed under the National Ropeways Development Programme (Parvatmala Pariyojana). It is structured as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project, with an estimated construction period of six years. After completion, Adani Enterprises Ltd. will operate the system for a concession period of 29 years. In addition to improving accessibility to Kedarnath, the project is expected to support local employment and contribute to tourism-related economic activity in the area.

On this occasion, Mr Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, said that “The Kedarnath ropeway is more than an engineering project – it is a bridge between devotion and modern infrastructure.” He further mentioned that “By making this sacred journey safer, faster and more accessible, we honour the faith of millions while creating new opportunities for Uttarakhand’s people through our partnership with NHLML and the Government of Uttarakhand. This prestigious project reflects our commitment to building infrastructure that not only serves the nation but also uplifts its people.”
