CMRL Expands Chennai Metro Trials Up to Porur Junction Station

Chennai ( Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro project progressed as Chennai Metro Rail Limited ( CMRL) extended the trial runs on Corridor 4 of Phase 2. The CMRL has extended the trials on the 9.1 km stretch connecting Mullai Thottam Metro Station and Porur Junction Metro Station.

In March 2025, CMRL initially conducted the trial runs between the Poonamallee Depot and  Mullaithottam, a 3 km stretch of Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro Phase 4. 

​Thiru. M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., Managing Director, stated that “extension of testing and trials today marks a significant milestone in the progress of the Phase-2 Project of CMRL. These dynamic trials along the viaduct section of Corridor 4 will demonstrate our commitment to achieving key project targets in the shortest possible time period. We are steadily moving towards commissioning the project for the benefit of the public.”

3 Firms Bid for Track Contract CA-273 of Mumbai Metro Line-2B 

Mumbai ( Metro Rail News): Paras Railtech, Apurvakriti Infrastructure (AIPL), and Rahee Infratech have submitted their bids for the second ballastless track-work contract for the Mumbai Metro Line 2B (Yellow Line). This line extends 23.6 kilometres from Andheri West to Mandale.

In March 2025, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) floated tender for this contract with a value of Rs. 121.83 crore and an unknown deadline. Furthermore, Technical bids were opened on 22 April 2025 to reveal 3 bidders.

About Package CA-273 

The scope of work under Package CA-273 involves the installation of standard gauge ballastless track between Andheri West Station and ITO Station in Bandra-Kurla Complex. 

MMRDA’s Brief Scope: Design, Supply, Installation, Testing And Commissioning Of Standard Gauge Ballastless Track In Main Line From Andheri West (Excluding Station Ch: 34+035.873) To ITO Station (Including Station Ch:44+857.698) Of Line-2B of Mumbai Metro Rail Project

The bids submitted by 3 firms have now been sent for technical bid evaluation. Once the technical evaluation is completed, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to announce the lowest Bidder for the contract. 

Latest Update on Mumbai Metro Line 2B 

Recently, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated trial runs on the Mandale-Mankhurd stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 2 B. The trials are underway on a 5.3 km stretch from Diamond Garden to Mandale, which features 5 stations.

Delhi (Metro Rail News): DMRC has announced JMD Consultants & Nuvision Commercial and Escort Services (NCES) as the lowest bidders for the Ticket Vending Services contract at various stations of Delhi Metro. The contract includes the Provision Of Ticket Vending Services At Various Delhi Metro Stations Of Line 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, And Other Locations.

Bidding Process 

DMRC floated a tender for this contract with a 1440 days deadline. Technical bids were opened on 18 March 2025 to reveal that 5 firms have submitted bids for the contract. On 24 April 2025,a technical evaluation of the submitted bids took place. 

On 24 April 2025, financial bids were opened, revealing that JMD Consultants & Nuvision Commercial and Escort Services (NCES) are the lowest bidder for the contract.

Titagarh-BHEL Unveils Production Line of Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL), in collaboration with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), unveiled the production line for Vande Bharat sleeper trains at TRSL’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Uttarpara, Kolkata, West Bengal at its Uttarpara. 

As per the Release, the production line was inaugurated by senior leaders from TRSL and BHEL, including Mr. Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, TRSL, and Ms. Bani Varma, Director, BHEL.

About the Contract 

Indian Railways awarded Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) a Rs. 24000 crore contract for the design and manufacture of 80 Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains, including long-term maintenance for 35 years. 

About Vande Bharat Sleeper 

The third generation of the Vande Bharat Train Series is a notable enhancement to the fleet of Indian Railways. The Vande Bharat 3.0 model is specifically engineered for long-distance travel and incorporates sleeper coaches. This train comprises 16 coaches, which include 11 AC 3-tier, 4 AC 2-tier, and 1 AC First Class coach. The Vande Bharat Sleeper train possesses the capacity to accommodate up to 823 passengers.

NCC Receives LoA for Package C4B of Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project 

Bengaluru (Metro Rail News): NCC Limited has officially received a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from Karnataka’s Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE) pertaining to the design and construction of nine stations within Package C4B of the Bangalore Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) Corridor 4, also known as the Kanaka Line.

The Line 4 (Kanka Line)  spans 46.88 km between Heelalige and Rajanukunte through 19  stations. However, the Package C4B includes the construction of 9 stations on this line only. 

Bidding Process 

NCC’s Bid Value: Rs. 649.15 crore

Karnataka’s Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE) invited bids for this contract at Rs. 528.05 crore, and a 2-year deadline.

On 9 September 2024, Technical bids were opened to reveal that NCC and RVNL–Rithwik JV were the only 2 firms that had submitted the bids for the contract. 

Technical evaluation of the submitted birds took place on 18 February 2025, and RVNL – Rithwik JV bids got rejected in the technical round. 

Financial bids were opened on 18 February 2025. Furthermore, financial evaluation took place on 25 April. Since NCC was the only bidder, it was declared the lowest bidder for the contract.

The awarded contractor will be responsible for the civil construction of 9 stations of Corridor 4B under Package C4B.

The scope of work under this contract also includes the systems installation work, such as electrical & mechanical (E&M), pre-engineered building (PEB) roof, and architectural finishing on Corridor 4B. 

Other contracts received by NCC for BSRP  

In January 2025, NCC also bagged Package C2-A from Karnataka’s Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE) at Rs. 501.25 crore. The Package C2-A includes the construction of 8 stations on Corridor 2 (Mallige Line).

Centre Govt Allocates Rs. 8,445.8 Crore for Chennai Metro Phase 2

Chennai (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro Project progressed as Rs. 8,445.8 Crore has been sanctioned for the Chennai Metro Phase 2 this financial year. For the very first time, Chennai has received the highest allocation among all metro projects in the country.  

The recent development follows the approval by the Centre in October 2024 to categorise the project as a centrally-assisted initiative, marking the alleviation of more than three years of financial clearance delays that had necessitated the state to independently bear the associated costs. 

Initially, Tamil Nadu was reluctant to assume the entire borrowing responsibility, as this could adversely affect its debt ceiling, leading to delays of 10 to 14 days in settling contractor invoices. 

However, since the Centre’s involvement, financial constraints have been effectively addressed, according to a senior official from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). The official noted that contractor bills generally range from 20 crore for elevated corridors to 40 crore for underground segments.

Airport-Kilambakkam Corridor Gets Approval From State Govt.

The Tamil Nadu state Government has approved the long-pending Airport-Kilambakkam metro extension. The Airport-Kilambakkam metro corridor spans 15.4km and is estimated to cost Rs.9,335 crore. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the project has now been sent to the Centre for its approval.

L&T Achieves Breakthrough in India’s Longest Rail Tunnel on Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Line

Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Broad Gauge Rail Link Project advanced with the longest tunnel breakthrough spanning 14.57 km achieved by TBM Shakti at Tunnel No. 8 for Package 4 . The Tunnel No. 8 stretches between Devprayag and Janasu in Uttarakhand.

About TBM Shakti 

The breakthrough was recorded by the state-of-the-art Single-Shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) named Shakti, which has a diameter of 9.11m. TBM Shakti is the largest TBM to be deployed in the Himalayan region. 

The TBM Shakti was excavating at an average rate of 413 meters per month to complete the 10.4 km of the tunnel. Furthermore, the remaining 4.11 tunnel was completed through the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) 

Package 4 

In Package 4, L&T is constructing India’s longest railway tunnel (14.5 km upline, 13.1 km downline). Package 2 includes 26.6 km of tunnel excavation, 28 km of tunnel lining, two railway bridges, one road bridge, and embankments.

Union Railway Minister Mr Ashwini Vaishnaw, in the presence of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Mr Pushkar Singh Dhami, stated, “a testament to India’s engineering strength and the commitment to enhancing railway infrastructure in even the most difficult terrains.”

“This significant breakthrough in one of the most challenging terrains, reflects our commitment and strong collaboration between our client RVNL,” said Mr S V Desai, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Civil Infrastructure), L&T. “This milestone fosters a deep sense of collective achievement within our team, proving that with dedication and innovation, no challenge is insurmountable.”

About the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Line

The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Railway Line project spans 125 km, connecting which connects Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Gauchar, and Karnaprayag across five Himalayan districts, reducing the travel time from seven hours to two and supporting the Char Dham Yatra.

7th OWG Bridge Launched for Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project (MAHSR)progressed with the launching of the 7th Open Web Girder (OWG) bridge spanning 70 m over the two Dedicated Freight Corridor tracks near Vadodara, Gujarat.

This is the seventh steel bridge out of the planned 28 steel bridges planned for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor.

About the 7th OWG Bridge 

The launching operation was completed within a 12-hour timeframe, employing intermittent blocks on the DFCC tracks. 

The steel bridge weighs 674 metric tons, measures 13 meters in height and 14 meters in width.

 The Bridge was fabricated at a workshop in Durgapur, Kolkata, and subsequently transported to the installation site using trailers. 

The bridge was launched utilising a 49-meter-long launching nose, which has a weight of approximately 204 metric tons.

The fabrication of the bridge incorporated an estimated 28800 units of Tor-Shear Type High Strength (TTHS) bolts, which were subjected to C5 system painting, and included elastomeric bearings, all designed to ensure a lifespan of 100 years. 

The steel structure was assembled at an elevation of 18 meters from the ground on temporary trestles and was pulled into position by employing the automatic mechanism of two semi-automatic jacks, each with a capacity of 250 tons, utilising mac-alloy bars.

4 Firms Bid for E&M Contract of Chennai Metro Line-4

Chennai (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro project progressed as 4 firms submitted bids for the electrical & mechanical (E&M), plumbing and fire protection contract C4-E&M-06 of Line 4. This corridor of the Chennai Metro spans 26.09 km from Light House to Poonamallee Bypass through 30 stations. 

In November 2024, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) invited bids for this contract with a 1630-day (4.46-year) deadline.

Contract’s Scope of Work 

The scope of work outlined in this contract encompasses the system installations at eight of the ten underground stations on Line 4.

Stations: Light House, Kutchery Road, Alwarpet, Bharatidasan Road, Boat Club, Nandanam, Panagal Park, and Kodambakkam.

Note: All the stations mentioned above are under construction by ITD Cementation India as part of packages UG-01 (5.15 km) & UG-02 (4.87 km), which were awarded to ITD Cementation in January 2022.

CMRL’s Brief Scope: Supply, installation, testing, commissioning and training of electrical, plumbing and fire protection works for 8 underground stations from Light House metro to Kodambakkam metro including bored tunnel between stations, cut & cover box, u section and ramp (chainage 0 -173 m to 9+949 m) for Corridor- 4 Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase II. 

Further Process 

The bids submitted by the 4 firms have been sent for technical evaluation. After the technical evaluation, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to announce the lowest bidder for the contract.

RITES Submits DPR of Jaipur Metro Phase 2

Jaipur (Metro Rail News): In November 2024, the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation appointed the Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) to develop the detailed project report for the Jaipur Metro Phase 2 at Rs. 4.6 crore. As per the official of JMRC, RITES has submitted the draft of the DPR. However, the CM of Rajasthan, Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma and his team have suggested some changes regarding the route and station locations.

Once the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) is finalised, it will be forwarded to the Union Government for approval. The next step will involve signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to initiate the construction phase. Only after the MoU is in place will tenders be floated for construction work. Officials estimate that this entire process could take around three to four months to complete.

Provisions in the Draft DPR of Jaipur Metro Phase 2

The Jaipur Metro Phase 2 will cover a total of 40km route and feature 35 stations.. This corridor will start from Sitapura and conclude at Sikar Road. The entire project is expected to cost about Rs. 10,000 crore. Out of 35 stations, 1 station will be underground while 34 stations will be elevated. After completion, the project is expected to cater to about 2.5 million commuters.

MMRDA Initiates Trial Run on Mumbai Metro Line 2B

Mumbai (Metro Rail News): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started trial runs on the Mandale-Mankhurd stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 2B on Wednesday. The primary objective of this trial was to examine the rolling stock’s interaction with civil infrastructure.

Originally, the Mumbai Metro Yellow Line covers a distance of  23.643 km from  D N Nagar to Mandale through 20 stations. The trials are underway on a 5.3 km stretch from Diamond Garden to Mandale. This section covers 5 stations: 

  • Diamond Garden
  • Shivaji Chowk
  • BSNL 
  • Mankhurd 
  • Mandale

This trial aims to scrutinise the critical systems, including tracks, signalling, and rolling stock. These trials are instrumental in assessing communication-based train control (CBTC), telecommunication infrastructure, platform screen doors, and automatic fare collection systems.

The commercial operations on this section will only commence after receiving the clearance certificate from CMRS. 

Progress on India’s Largest Metro Depot

The trains for the Yellow Line will be maintained and serviced at Mandale Depot, which is India’s largest Metro Depot. The construction of Mandale Depot is already 98% complete. The depot featured the capacity to house 72 metro rakes.
