Indian Railways is set to complete ‘160 Kmph Speed’ project ahead of schedule

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): In view of the less number of trains in operation, Indian Railways has decided to utilise the situation to complete the ambitious project of raising train speed to 160 kilometre per hour between the busy Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata routes by March 2022, much ahead of its scheduled target of September 2023.

In a letter to all departments concerned, Northern Railway has asked to start planning out the details for upgrading the infrastructure to operate trains at a speed of 160 kmph so that work starts from the next month in right earnest to meet the latest target.

In order to ensure the speedy implementation, the status of the 160 kmph project would be discussed in the railways weekly coordination meeting.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had recently reviewed the project after which all the zones concerned followed it up with necessary steps.

“It was desired that the work should be completed latest by September 2023 and preferably in the next 18 months,” the letter dated 3 August stated.

Similar instructions from other zones involved in the two major routes like North Central Railway are believed to have been issued to departments concerned including electrical, mechanical, civil engineering, signal and telecom to speed up the implementation of the over Rs 1,600 crore project approved by the Cabinet last year.

In view of the fact that a large number of passenger carrying trains are not running, the opportunity of availing longer blocks presently available should be utilised for doing the work, the letter said.

The 160 kmph project is crucial for running private trains as it would fulfill one of the key requirements of all bidders to join the race.

The work involves track and signalling upgrades, elimination of unmanned level-crossings and fencing along the two major trunk routes of 1,384 km Delhi-Mumbai corridor and 1,450 km Delhi-Kolkata route.

Departments should plan out the blocks to be taken so as to complete the work in next 18 months and start lining up the necessary resources including contractual agencies to start to block working from September 2020, the letter instructed.

DMRC tender for remodelling of metro attracts 10 bidders

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): In a major development, The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited applications for a tender for remodelling of Ajronda Depot in Faridabad on DMRC’s Violet line which stretches from Kashmere Gate to Raja Nahar Singh area of Ballabhgarh in Faridabad. The DMRC has also released the names of firms taking part in the process.

The proposal includes remodelling of the metro line along with increasing Ajronda Depot’s capacity. This is a part of the DMRC’s plan to repurpose the Sarita Vihar metro station.

According to the sources familiar with the developments, the tender will include civil construction works for Remodelling along with Construction of Ajronda Metro Depot cum Workshop and Inspections of the Bay Line including Design, Fabrication, Supply, Erection of Pre-Fabricated Steel Roof Structure etc. The duration of the work shall be 21 days as per sources.

Kisan Rail to begin services from Friday

New Delhi (Metro Rail News): The Indian Railways will begin its Kisan Rail services to transport perishables from Friday, it said on Thursday, adding the first such train, carrying vegetables and fruits, would run between Devlali in Maharashtra and Danapur in Bihar.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced this initiative in her Budget speech earlier this year envisaging setting up of a ‘Kisan Rail’ through the public-private-partnership (PPP) model for a cold supply chain to transport perishable goods.

“As announced in the current year’s Budget to start “The Kishan Rail” for providing a seamless supply chain of perishable produce, the Ministry of Railways is introducing the first Kisan Rail from Devlali to Danapur on August 7 at 11 am on a weekly basis…,” the ministry said in a statement. The train will reach Danapur at 6.45 pm on the next day, covering 1,519 km in 31.45 hours, it said.

Central Railway, Bhusawal Division is primarily an agro-based division and Nasik and the surrounding region produces huge quantities of fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, other perishables, onions and other agro products.

These perishables are mainly transported to areas around Patna, Allahabad, Katni, Satna and others.

The Kisan Rail has been provided scheduled halts at Nasik Road, Manmad, Jalgaon, Bhusaval, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Itarsi, Jabalpur, Satna, Katni, Manikpur, Prayagraj Chheoki, Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Nagar and Buxar.

“Aggressive marketing is being done with local farmers, loaders, APMC and individuals. Wide publicity is being done in print and electronic media. Demand is being aggregated and it is expected that the train will be patronised well and will be a great help to the farmers, as the freight of this train will be charged at ‘P’ Scale,” the statement said.

The proposal to use refrigerated parcel vans to ferry perishables was first announced by then railway minister Mamata Banerjee in the 2009-10 Budget. However, it failed to take off.

HC allows MMRDA to cut 357 mangroves for construction of Metro piers with some conditions

Mumbai (Metro Rail News): The Bombay high court (HC) on Wednesday allowed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to go for cutting 357 mangroves for the construction of Metro piers at Sewri and Bhakti Park station, as part of under-construction Metro Line-4 that connects Wadala in eastern suburbs to Kasarwadavli on Ghodbunder road in adjoining Thane district. The court also imposed few conditions so that environmental loss is compensated.

The two-member HC bench, comprising Justice SJ Kathawalla and Riyaz Chagla, allowed MMRDA to cut 357 mangroves primarily after it observed that development of Metro Line-4 has an immense public importance in terms of public transport. The bench has also directed Metro authoity to comply with the conditions imposed by authorities while granting permission.

The conditions include compensatory afforestation over a hectare of degraded mangrove forest at Gorai, where the MMRDA will need to plant 4,444 mangroves saplings with developing a nursery cost and fully fund it for a duration of ten years. It also directed the MMRDA to construct a temporary road for carrying out the construction work.

Earlier, the court directives had prohibited development work in mangrove forests and a 50-metre buffer zone around mangroves until the court found the importance of the work keeping in mind the benefits it would provide to the people.

PUNE (Metro Rail News): Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Tuesday was reported saying that the cabinet is soon going approve the Pune-Nashik semi high-speed corridor project so that works start early.

Pawar held a meeting to discuss the project with the officials of the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MRIDC) on Tuesday. The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs16,039 crore with its distance being the 235km.

The travel time from Pune to Nashik will be reduced to an hour and forty-five minutes once the semi-high speed corridor is ready. The MRIDC will be developing some high-speed trains, which will ply on the corridor with regular trains. The high-speed trains will initially have six coaches and run at a speed of 200kmph.

The corridor will pass through Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik, providing connectivity to industrial zones such as Alandi, Chakan, Khed, Manchar and Narayangaon, along with others as per official sources.

MMRDA may miss the deadlines of Line 7 and 2A completion

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Metro Line 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) and 2A (Dahisar west to DN Nagar) rakes delivery will be delayed by four to five months, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) a news report quoted its Commissioner R A Rajeev saying it. This will delay the operation of Metro line 7 and 2A.

He was stated saying that BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) was providing the metro coaches for line 7 and 2A. In August 2020, the first metro coach was expected to be delivered as per the contractual timelines. However, it has not arrived yet and proposed to arrive by the year’s end.

The additional 10 metro coaches are now supposed to arrive in June 2021, six months later than the deadline. The shortage of labourers, as several of them, left the city during the lockdown has a great impact on the works as many infrastructure construction works are being carried on with only 30 per cent of manpower.

The Metro’s lines 7 and 2A were expected to commence commercial operations by December 2020. The 18.6-km-long Metro 2A is estimated to cost Rs 6,410 crore, while the 16.5-km Metro-7 project is expected to cost Rs 6,208 crore. The MMRDA is the nodal authority for the various Metro lines covering 337-km network in the MMR.

MMRDA cancels bidding process for three tenders of DN Nagar-Mandale corridor

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): In an unprecedented move, the Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) cancelled the civil construction bidding process for three tenders of Mumbai Metro’s 23.6 km long DN Nagar-Mandale corridor (2B) which is scheduled to have 22 stations.

The reasons for the cancellation has not been made public yet. It is being guessed that it may be due to the delay in the current projects and the authority may go for shorter duration tenders to complete the works on time.

The authority had invited tenders for two packages of the yellow line in February itself after it terminated three contracts in January which were awarded to Simplex Infrastructures and RCC–MBZ JV.

The bids include construction as well as maintenance and repair works of the proposed metro route. The slow and poor works of the different firms have slowed down the pace of the project with pandemic making it worst.

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): The residents who were protesting for a long time in demand of a Metro station at Anchepalya (Srikantapura gram panchayat on Tumkur road) have withdrawn their protest after the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) agreed to provide them with the construction of two new roads and a stadium.

At a meeting held with the residents and the BMRCL officials on Monday, it was offered by the BMRCL that it will construct two roads in the Anchepalya area (behind Kirloskar layout) that will connect them to the nearby Metro stations and also construct a stadium on a 29-gunta land. The residents are hopeful of getting these done on a priority basis.

When Metro began the construction of the stations on the 3.77 km Tumkur road stretch (Nagasandra to Bangalore International Exhibition Centre) in phase two of the metro project, the residents came into resistance mode demanding a metro station in their area. The metro authoities negotiated with the locals as their protests have hampered the progress of the metro development works in the past .

According to reports, the construction of a Metro station would cost much to the metro Corporation so it worked out this plan and made negotiations with the residents of the area so that they withdraw the protests. The BMRCL will start working on these works soon according to sources.

Namma Metro records a Rs 100 crore loss due to non-operation from last four-month

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): It has already been more than four months after the nationwide lockdown and with that Namma Metro’s operations were suspended due to the ongoing pandemic. This has made Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) a huge loss as it has not received a single rupee in the form of passenger revenue for the entire duration of time.

According to different media reports, the corporation has incurred a loss of Rs 100 crore in the entire period.

It is clear that even the passenger services resume, the corporation will not be able to earn as much as it used to earn in the pre-COVID days. It has been reported that the government is thinking of releasing a fund of Rs 961 crore to four transport undertakings, including KSRTC and BMTC especially for paying the salaries of its employees but the amount has not yet reached to the corporation.

The decision for the resumption of the metro services in Bangaluru completely remains with the Central Government and as the pandemic gains pace, it is unlikely to give nod for running metros.

Meanwhile it is being reported that the corporation has deployed 714 staffs for Covid duty in a condition where the Corporation is facing a money crunch. As per the official sources, the BMRCL is waiting for some government funds to pay its employees and continue its maintenance works.

Rs 103 crore tender for New Garia Metro depot for faster developments

KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): A tender of Rs 103.1 crore has been aired for developing the New Garia Metro car depot to complete some crucial works on time. The development of the depot will play a crucial role in the operation of the New Garia-Ruby Park (Hemanta Mukherjee) Metro service which is scheduled to be operational by 2022.

The slow pace of work has worried the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and it is taking necessary steps to speed up the process. The present North-South (Noapara-New Garia) Metro depot on railway land is reported to be on full swing.

The tender has been released to complete a series of works, including water supply, drainage and sewage, road, tracks, power supply, general electrical works, supply and installation and commission of machinery and plants for setting up of the car depot.

Once ready, it will be one of the biggest integrated Metro car depots in the city as per the media reports which will further help to serve the North-South and New Garia-Airport alignments.

More than 85% of civil engineering work for the main station building is over. Metro Railway hopes to make the station for the airport line operational by December 2020, using the existing maintenance shed for Kavi Subhash-Dum Dum corridor as per the official sources.

1,300 piles completed in Priority Corridor of Kanpur Metro project: UPMRC

KANPUR (Metro Rail News): According to the recent developments, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has completed more than half of the piling work in the nine-km-long Priority Corridor being constructed between IIT and Motijheel for the Kanpur Metro Rail project.

Piling refers to digging the ground and putting iron net under it in order to lay the foundation of the structure.

A total of 2,330 piles are to be prepared between IIT and Motijheel, out of which around 1,300 piles have been prepared so far. 45% of the work is yet to be completed. Construction of only eight piles remains between IIT Kanpur and Gurudev metro station.

As per the media reports, the civil construction of the Priority Corridor commenced on November 15 last year and the target to complete 1,277 piles by the end of July had been set. UPMRC has surpassed this target as it has prepared as many as 1,300 piles so far. The metro development work has gained a rapid pace, one official said.

The recent things suggest that if the things continue to be done in the same way then we may expect Kanpur Metro to get operational by the end of 2021
