Mumbai (Metro Rail News): Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) today completed 1.5-km long tunnel beneath Mithi River. Terratec-made Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Godavari-4 completed the upline stretch of 1.5-km from BKC to Dharavi. Godavari-4 was commissioned on August 21, 2019, from BKC launching shaft and shaped the tunnel with 1,043 RCC rings up to Dharavi. This is 29th breakthrough on the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 corridor.
“Notwithstanding the fact that the project is challenging; with high water tables and complex geology, I am happy that our team has accomplished the assigned task despite Covid-19 related restrictions’’, said Mr. Ranjit Singh Deol, Managing Director, MMRC.
We had a conversation with Mr. V. R. Sharma, Managing Director of Jindal Steel and Power Limited. He discussed the various aspects of the pandemic and how his company has made the pandemic an opportunity. In an exclusive interview with Metro Rail News, he discussed various aspects of the business which the Company is planning to do in future. The discussion ranges from pandemic & problems to the future of Indian Economy. Here are some excerpts from the interview hosted by the Managing Editor, Mr. Narendra Shah:-
NS – How do you find the Indian economy amid pandemic? How has it affected the steel and power sector? Mr. Sharma – The country has passed through a very challenging time especially during the period of April, May and June. During the lockdown when everything including Transport of essential items like fruits and vegetable was stopped then also the power plants were working to provide electricity to the Nation. Despite lockdown, the Indian government allowed the steel industry to function although few segments of the industry were closed for 15 -20 days. This helped us to continue our operations and moving our materials to ports for export to other countries. It helped us a lot. Finally, now, the market is coming up very fast and it will improve in the coming time as I hope.
NS – Is the worst over for the Iron and Steel sector? How do you think about the economic revival of India? Mr. Sharma – Yes, The worst is over for the steel industry and also for the MSMEs. The only problem we face today is that the trains are not running. We request the Government of India and the Ministry of Railways to start running trains as the people who went to their home states are unable to come to their workplaces. It is the biggest challenge today. The other problem is that a huge part of the nation is experiencing flood-like situations. Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Assam and some parts of Chhattisgarh are worst affected. We are requesting the government to let people return to their workplaces as the floods have hampered their livelihoods and they are not able to do anything in their home states. In such a case, it will be difficult for the government to feed all of them. The government shall take some initiatives specially of running trains to bring such people back to their workplaces. It will not only help the government to bring them to the mainstream society and help these people improve their livelihoods but also help the Indian economy to gain pace.

NS – Recently, the JSPL became the first company to supply Head Hardened Rails to Indian Metros starting from Kolkata Metro? How do you take it? Mr. Sharma – This is a very pleasant moment for us. We started the head hardened facility in 2014 but it was too early to sell this product to Indian customers especially to Indian Railways and Metros. The metro rails were being imported since its beginning. The Delhi metro was getting it imported from Korea. We thought that if we can produce them in India then why to import them. Finally, our request was heard by the government specially the PMO and Ministry of iron and Steel. The government then issued directives to metro rail services and metro projects to invite local companies and to give them trial orders. In the first such move, we got such offer from Kolkata metro and the second from Pune Metro. Now we are discussing it with 18 metro rail projects which are coming in the country and I am sure that we are going to get orders from them also. Secondly, there is going to be a large replacement market. It has been almost 15 years of phase 1 of Delhi Metro and now onwards they will require replacement of Rails. We will be able to supply it at a pan India level and we are also looking for supplying it to Indian Railways specially for its projects of High-Speed rail networks including that of the bullet trains. For Vande Bharat trains too, the head hardened Rails will be the right solution.
NS – What will be the role of JSPL in the development of Railways and Metros across the nation? Is the Jindal Group going to take part in running private trains in the near future as the Indian Government is opening doors of the railways for private players? Mr. Sharma – We don’t have core competencies for running atransport business. Our core work is to produce steel as per the requirements of the users. We are not going to run the trains but we will manufacture and supply rails to railways and metros.
NS – What do you think about the privatisation of Railways? How will it help the Railways and private businesses? Mr. Sharma – The move will help to improve services and the people who are a position to afford private trains will get better services. It will enable them to reach their destinations faster and running private goods trains may be the right mechanism in time to come. As the Indian Railways is one of the largest of its kind in the world and caters to millions of people, it will help to accelerate growth in the sector once the private players come on board.
NS – How is the boycott China movement going to help Indian companies specially who are working for the development of Rail and Metro Projects? Where do you find your firm in this race? Mr. Sharma – It is the right of each nation to become Atmanirbhar (self-reliant). China was not supplying Railway systems and hence I think that it is not going to impact the Indian Railways for the suppliers of the Indian Railways. China was dominating a major sector of market including household goods and electronic items but with some exceptions, they have not net kind of presence in the Railways sector and it will not affect the iron and steel industry. There is nobody who is fully boycotting China today. The need is to go for true self-reliance as announced by the Honorable Prime Minister.
NS – Jindal Steel has been actively participating in the bid processes of metros? Is the JSPL going to start any new venture in this field? Kindly explain. Mr. Sharma – When taking Jindal as a group, we produce rails enclosing resistance and Our group company Jindal Stainless provide steel for railways coaches specially for metros. We have a complete solution for everything within the group and we will continue to expand and add more and more products whenever it is required by Indian Railways or Indian Metros.
NS – Despite a persistent recession in the market, the JSPL has been experiencing rise? What are the strategies behind it? How are you thinking about the future business of the company? Mr. Sharma – We have exported our materials to other countries and we will continue to do so. This is our success mantra which has helped us. We charted out a complete policy which includes our plan for how to sell materials and how much we can and how comfortably we can sell so that our money also comes. With God’s grace, it went very well and I thank our team for doing a great job. I also thank the government of India and the ministry of Railways as they helped us to transport our goods to ports. I also thank the units of shipping and transportation.
NS – According to different news reports, your company made a profit of Rs 226 crores in June. This was the first phase of Unlocking the economy after a long lockdown and most of the companies are still experiencing money crunch. How has JSPL under your leadership managing the things? How do you take these achievements? Mr. Sharma – We took lockdown in a different way. When the lockdown was there, we were in a position to work from home. We didn’t take any rest and we truly worked from home. It was the reason which helped us to formulate a right strategy to move forward. We utilised our time to give pace to the marketing work along with mobilising our people at workplaces. In Jharkhand, Orissa and Chhattisgarh, pandemic was not there at all as it was very minimal. The local people were healthy as the impacts of pandemic were not there. These are the places where we run our plants and keeping in view the concepts of social distancing and personal hygiene, we worked tirelessly to achieve our targets. We minimised overcrowding by allowing the workers of commercial segment to work from home. These all factors were key to success.
NS – What are the measures being taken by you to ensure health safety at your workplaces? How is the JSPL making a COVID resistant environment at its workshops and factories? Mr. Sharma – We charted out a plan and approached our neighbourhood. We ensured that if our neighbours are well, our people would not be infected. We had a team of doctors available on 24/7 basis with all necessary equipment, distributed masks and sanitizers among the villagers along with deployment of ambulances for tackling emergencies like situations and they helped us a lot to keep the neighbouring areas COVID free. At the same time, we took proper measures for disinfecting our workplaces and keeping our workers healthy. We made more efforts to provide them nutritional food and multivitamins with helping them to follow the instructions of social distancing. We reduced the 20 persons per thousand square metres to 10 per thousand so that chances of COVID spread may be tackled.
NS – Where do you find your firm at the end of the next decade in terms of developments of Metro Rail projects across the different cities of the nation? In which other segments of the urban transport system, the firm is working to bring changes? Mr. Sharma – We are very hopeful that we will be in a position to meet out the entire requirements of the country for head hardened rails with a major focus on it. The other areas include expansion of our business in terms of providing the suppliers of metro services and Railways with electrification material and expansion of wheel business. Our sister company is in the coach manufacturing business as I discussed with you and we will be able to supply these all things for Pan Indian requirements. The Jindal Group is effectively working on the various aspects of these all things.
NS – How will the pandemic be affecting the different development works of the metros? Kindly share your opinion. Mr. Sharma – It was a very good opportunity for the Metros to complete their different maintenance works including that of tracks, AFC gates and platforms. As I know they have not done 100 percent due to lack of manpower but there are still chances of getting these things done before the services resume and they shall do it. They shall run with limited persons per coach to avoid chances of COVID spread.

NAGPUR (Metro Rail News): The Maha Metro recently organised an international webinar on the subject “Business Opportunities with Nagpur Metro” on August 14. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (also known as Maha Metro) proposed in the event that it is targeting to generate 60% its Non-Fare Box revenue from Nagpur Metro.
The webinar, organised in partnership with The Indus Entrepreneurs, unveiled various business prospects offered by the metro corporation. It also included advertising and branding opportunities.

New Delhi (Metro Rail News): It has been almost five months of a complete shutdown of metro services across the country has created an unprecedented disruption of business for the operators.
In an interview, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director Mangu Singh is reported to have discussed the financial and operational challenges for Delhi’s transport lifeline and the future of mass rapid transport systems.
He said that the outlets running on the metro premises are not being able to pay them as their businesses have been stuck off for the entire period of time ranging between March to august which is around more than 140 days now.

Bangalore ( Metro Rail News ) – One of the most awaited projects of Bangaluru Metro, Yelachenahalli – Anjanapura (Green Line) project which was supposed to be ready by 2018, has a new deadline: November 1, 2020. According to few news reports, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) MD Ajay Seth has said that the first 6.4 km elevated section of phase 2 of Namma Metro will be commissioned on November 1, which is also the state formation day-Karnataka Rajyotsava.
Around 87 per cent of the work has been completed on the line. The metro line was supposed to be completed by 2018 and has already been delayed by over two years. The earlier deadline was August 2020, but this too was further delayed due to the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown, where construction activities had been stopped.
TNM had earlier reported that the pre-COVID-19 deadline for the project was August 2020 and officials were hoping to inaugurate the line on Independence Day. The delay earlier was due to the BMRCL’s plan to use a part of the forest land to set up a depot, which had triggered protests and objections by environmentalists. Later, the BMRCL acquired private land for the same.
The Yelachenahalli – Anjanapura line will have five stops: Anjanapura Road Cross, Krishnaleela Park (ISKON), Vajarahalli, Talaghattapura and Anjanapura Township. Officials told TOI that a trial run of trains is expected to begin by August 20.
In his speech during the 74th Independence Day celebrations here, Karnataka’s CM BS Yedurappa said, “we will take up Phase II of Bangalore Metro at a cost of Rs 30,695 crore and we hope to complete the project by June 2024.”
Noting that some 110 acres of land that belongs to NGEF near the Byappanahalli Metro station has been identified and “We are designing people-friendly plans here”, He had said. The plan also includes setting up of a foods park.
Kochi (Metro Rail News): Kochi Metro Rail Limited( KMRL ) on Monday started the construction works of the 1.16 KM Metro stretch from SN Junction to Thrippunithura beginning with pile load test.
“One major challenge KMRL is facing in the stretch is the presence of existing Railway Overbridge after SN Junction which is falling on a sharp curve having a 152-metre radius. To meet the challenge KMRL is planning to construct a 60-metre special span” its Managing Director Mr. Alkesh Kumar Sharma said.
“KMRL is adopting a unique steel open web girder system. The steel superstructure will be supported over the pier cap with a pedestal and bearing arrangement”, He further said.
“We have completed the tender process in record time and now the pile load testing has also started. We hope the results are positive. Reaching Thrippunithura is vital for KMRL as well as for people of Thrippunithura.” said Mr. Sharma. The initial pile load test of 1200 diameter circular pile for the stretch is being done to validate the safe pile capacity considered for the design. The test load is 1050 tonne which is 2.5 times the safe load of 420 tonnes considered in the design. The testing is expected to be completed in 48 hours. KMRL had engaged the consortium of KEC-VNC for this phase of construction.
Chennai (Metro Rail News): The Madras High Court has permitted the CMRL to encash more than Rs 142 crore worth bank guarantees issued by Transtonnelstory-Afcons JV, a Russia based company which was awarded contracts worth more than Rs 2,500 crore for construction of underground Metro stations in Chennai. It is being seen a matter of great relief for the CMRL.
The CMRL initiated encashment due to delay and quality issues in the completion of the projects by the company. Justice N Sathish Kumar granted the relief to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) in order while dismissing the plea moved by the Russian company. However, since the counsel for the company sought a week’s time to prefer an appeal against the order before a division bench, Justice Kumar instructed the CMRL to maintain status quo till August 21. CMRL was also granted liberty to encash the guarantees if the appeal is not filed within that time. The issue pertains to a resolution passed by CMRL to encash two bank guarantees issued by the company for Rs 25.77 crore dated October 16, 2018, and Rs 117.51 crore dated December 29, 2010, for the alleged delay caused by the company in completing the underground station construction and quality issues in the project. Aggrieved, Transtonnelstory-Afcons JV, a joint venture of Transtonnelstroy Limited, Moscow and Afcons Infrastructure Limited, Mumbai, moved the high court seeking to restrain CMRL from encashing the guarantees. The company bagged a contract to design and construct underground metro stations at Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar East, Anna Nagar Tower, Thirumangalam and associated tunnels for a price of Rs 1,030.99 crore. It inked a second contract worth Rs 1,566.81 crore to design and construct underground stations at Washermenpet, Mannadi, High Court, Chennai Central, Egmore and associated tunnels.
According to the company, despite mobilisation of necessary resources, there was a delay in commencement of work and attributed the delay to CMRL.The petitoner said they requested CMRL to revise the key dates, but it declined the same and this issue became a dispute between the parties. Hence, the matter was referred to an arbitral tribunal for extension of time as well as for costs of the claim, the petitioner said.
The CMRL while opposing the pleas, contended that despite numerous requests and reminders, the company failed to complete the outstanding works and fix snags to the satisfaction of CRML compelling it to encash the guarantee. New Delhi (Metro Rail News): The Private entities who are going to be handed over 150 trains to ply on 109 routes by the Railways will have a free hand to choose halt stations of the trains they operate according to documents released by the Indian Railways.

They will also have to provide the time in and time out at the intermediate railway stations, which shall form part of the train operation plan. This has to be submitted in advance and will be in place for at least a year, after which it can be revised, the same documents say.
The Railways has been reported to say that the number of such halts of the private trains will not be more than the number of existing halts of the fastest train of the Railways operating on such routes. The train operation plan submitted by private operators will also have to include the stations at which the water tanks in the trains need to be filled and also the railway stations, washing lines or stabling lines, as the case may be, at which the train toilets would be evacuated.
These trains are scheduled to begin operations by 2023. It has been further reported that the fare system of these trains will not be regulated by any authority and will be decided by the private players itself.
Bombardier Transportation India, Siemens Limited and Alstom Transport India Ltd are the biggest players of this process among 20 such other firms. The project is going to bring in private players to run trains is expected to gain private sector investment of around Rs 30,000 crore. The 109 routes have been formed into 12 clusters that will cover major parts of the Indian Railways network.
Indian Railways will earn by charging the private entity fixed haulage charges and energy charges as per actual consumption. The national transporter will also get a share in the gross revenue which will be decided through a transparent bidding process. As of now, the private train operator would need to access the Railway’s PRS (passenger reservation system) for management and distribution of its ticket inventory. For usage of such reservation system, they may have to pay a charge to the Indian Railways, as per the document.
New Delhi (Metro Rail News): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has started preliminary work on the 5th Metro bridge over river Yamuna, which is coming up on the Majlis Park – Maujpur Metro corridor of Delhi Metro Phase 4. The bridge will be 560 metres long. As of today, there are four existing bridges of Delhi Metro on the Yamuna River
The bridge is going to connect the Soorghat Metro Station and the Sonia Vihar Metro Station of the Majlis Park – Maujpur corridor. After carrying out a geotechnical investigation at the location of proposed piers, the activity of casting of test piles is in progress. The active course of Yamuna has been constructed by raising the level of the ground by filling of earth and sand from a nearby area with the protection of its slope through bamboo, jute netting and sandbags. The level of cofferdam has been kept the same as the level of the adjacent road to ensure smooth supply of construction materials.
This bridge will come up between two existing bridges on the Yamuna. These existing ones are Wazirabad Bridge and the Signature Bridge. If officials are to be believed, it is going to be first-ever Metro bridge over the Yamuna to be built using the Cantilever construction method. A cantilever is a rigid structural element which extends horizontally and is supported at only one end. Typically it extends from a flat, vertical surface such as a wall or pier, to which it must be firmly attached. Cantilever construction allows overhanging structures without additional support. This beautifies the look of a structure.

To finalize the Phase 4 designs, DMRC’s engineers are using the BIM platform, through which they have been able to finalise the designs even during the days of the pandemic when physical meetings weren’t possibleThis bridge crosses river Yamuna at about 385m downward of old Wazirabad Bridge and 213m upstream of existing Signature Bridge.
According to sources, mandatory approvals from the concerned agencies have been obtained for the construction of the bridge. DMRC is committed to fulfilling the conditions given by the Principal Committee on the Yamuna for construction of the bridge.

The North-East Frontier Railway zone of the Indian Railways has started the construction of the world’s tallest pier bridge in the North-Eastern state of Manipur. The bridge which is being constructed across river Ijai near Noney is being seen as an engineering marvel because of the tallest pier height in the project will be of 141 meter. The bridge is a part of Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal new BG line project (111 Km). The total length of the bridge will be 703 meters. The piers of the bridge are constructed using hydraulic augers, the tall piers needed specially designed “slip-form technique” to ensure efficient and continual construction.

Hyderabad ( Metro Rail News ) – Hyderabad will soon be home to the country’s largest railway coach factory in the private sector, with IT and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao laying the foundation stone for the Rs 1,000 crore Medha Servo Rail Coach factory at Kondakal village in Ranga Reddy district on Thursday.

Underscoring Telangana’s emergence as a major investment destination in various sectors, the Minister, speaking after the groundbreaking ceremony, said: “Hyderabad has an aviation hub at Adibhatla that makes components for Boeing, Apache and Sikorsky aircraft and helicopters, a tractor factory in Zaheerebad, a bus building unit in Hyderabad and now railway coaches will also be manufactured in Telangana.”
The factory which will have facilities to manufacture coaches, locomotives, intercity trainsets, metro trains, monorail, among others, will provide direct employment to at least 1,000 persons besides generating indirect employment for another 1,200. The planned production capacity would be 500 coaches of various types and 50 locomotives per year. Rama Rao, stating that the State government’s proactive approach and conducive policies had encouraged Medha Group to establish its world-class rail coach factory in the State, said the facility signals the creation of an ecosystem for rail coach manufacturing in Telangana State.
He called upon Medha, established by home grown entrepreneurs, to explore the possibility of venturing into the Rs 30,000 crore initiative of the Union government for manufacture of Metro coaches. He also urged the company to participate in monorail or metro rail projects in tier two cities like Warangal, besides entering the huge Electric Vehicles (EV) market taking advantage of the State government’s recent EV policy. “You must analyse our policy and come up with ideas to manufacture EV buses, cars, two-wheelers and even three-wheelers,” he said
He attributed the stupendous growth of Medha, established in 2005, to sheer hard work, and pointed out that it had grown from a Rs 25 crore company to setting up 12 factories across five continents. “Medha being a homegrown company makes Telangana proud,” he added.
