Delhi Metro to take action amid spike in covid cases in capital

Delhi Metro (Metro Rail News): Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will start adopting all necessary measures such as deploying flying squads, to ensure Delhi Metro commuters follow the Covid-19 protocols after the capital started witnessing a spike in Covid cases.

According to the data, Delhi reported more than 7,100 Covid-19 cases in the last 10 days and the positivity rate has climbed from 1.92 per cent on June 7 to 7.01 per cent on June 15. On Wednesday, 17th June the capital recorded 1,375 Coronavirus cases which is the highest number of daily cases in a month and zero death. According to the officials of DMRC, flying squads have been deployed at metro stations to keep a check on commuters who do not follow Covid norms.

Delhi Metro’s Principal Executive Director Anuj Dayal informed that the deployed flying squads are randomly checking commuters and ensuring that people adhere to Covid-appropriate behaviour. Meanwhile, the commuters are being provided with hand sanitizers on the metro stations. If any additional guidelines are directed by the DDMA, then DMRC will implement them as well, he added. According to Dayal, around 2,158 people were penalized for creating nuisance in May (under section 59 of the O&M act) and under the same section, over 500 passengers have been penalized in the first week of June.

According to the DMRC officials, to raise awareness among commuters, many social media campaigns were also launched. A DMRC official informed that Delhi Metro has also carried out multiple campaigns on its official social media platforms like twitter to raise awareness about the Covid-19 pandemic situation. Meanwhile, regular announcements are also being made inside Delhi Metro trains and on the stations for the same such as wearing masks inside the metro premises is mandatory.

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), on 15th June, submitted its undertaking to the Madras High Court which states that all the metro stations will be made disabled-friendly within six weeks. This decision comes after an audit report was submitted which found deficiencies in providing a barrier free access to passengers with special needs.

The undertaking was given before the Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice N Mala when a petition seeking orders to the CMRL to implement relevant sections of Persons With Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995, according to which it is compulsory for organisations to make transport systems accessible to the disabled.

The counsel that submitted the petition stated that the CMRL had failed to comply with the audit report for providing necessary facilities whereas CMRL informed the bench that they had taken certain measures to provide ramps and other facilities for disabled persons and have now promised to follow the audit report and will the gaps in the services.

According to the petitioner, Vaishnavi Jayakumar, CMRL’s 32 metro stations were lacking facilities for disabled persons such as ramps, lifts, handrails, ticket counters and tactile pathways. These facilities were either absent or non-accessible.

The CMRL had violated section 41 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, 2016 and Rule 15 of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2017. They are under a legal mandate to make sure that all their structures strictly adhere to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Urban Development in 2016, Jayakumar stated.

L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail Unveils ‘Metro Bazar’

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): As part of a passenger engagement initiative, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (L&TMRHL) has come up with an innovative concept of Metro Bazar, an experiential shopping opportunity for metro passengers. Metro Bazar was launched on 15th June by the Chief Guest, Swati Lakra IPS, Addl. DGP, Women Safety Wing, SHE Teams & Bharosa, Telangana State, in the presence of the Guest of Honour, NVS Reddy, MD, HMRL; and the special guest, KVB Reddy, MD & CEO, L&TMRHL along with other HMR officials, at Ameerpet Metro Station.

The first edition of Metro Bazar is being organised in partnership with Women Envision Council for Entrepreneurship (WomENvision), a Section-8 company, working towards empowering women entrepreneurs. In order to promote women entrepreneurship, Hyderabad Metro Rail has provided the space to WomENvision at a no-cost basis for this engagement.

Metro Bazar is being organised in the format of a flea market and is available at the concourse level of Ameerpet metro station for 15 days starting from 15 June 2022. Sixteen exhibitors from WomENvision will be showcasing their products at the Metro Bazar. Passengers can explore fourteen kiosks decked up with value-for-money products ranging from apparel and artworks to beauty and herbal products among many others. Available from 11am till 9 pm, Metro Bazar would also offer a host of food items and beverages to relish. After Ameerpet, Metro Bazar would be available at other metro stations for 15 days duration each.

Speaking during the event, Swati Lakra IPS, Addl. DGP, Women Safety Wing, SHE Teams & Bharosa, Telangana State, said, “It is heartening to note that Hyderabad Metro Rail is promoting gender parity and women empowerment in such a big way. Metro Bazar is indeed one good example of HMR’s focus on women entrepreneurship. Such initiatives go a long way in nurturing and providing avenues to women who want to do something in their lives. NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Quality Buildcon has won the contract for package CC-141R for which The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had opened the financial bids on 25th May, 2022. The firm which will become the contractor will work on the expansion of the metro depot for the trains under phase-4.

The scope of this contract includes Design, Fabrication, Supply and Erection of Pre-Engineered Steel Structure and Roofing for expansion of Workshop/other buildings at Shastri Park and Najafgarh Depots of Delhi MRTS project of Phase-3.

DMRC had issued the tender notice for the expansion package in December 2021 with an estimated cost of Rs. 14.16 crore and a 9-month completion deadline. The lowest 5 bidders for this contract are as follows:

10 firms bid for DPR of Sarjapur-Hebbal metro line

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): Ten firms have proposed their bids for detailed project report (DPR) for the 37-km metro line that will link Sarjapur and Hebbal. 

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), floated the tender for DPR a month after CM Basavaraj Bommai announced this new line in his speech. BMRCL is now evaluating the bids. The firm which had proposed their bids for the DPR includes RITES Ltd, Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System, Korea Railroad Technical Corporation, Urban Mass Transit Company, Consulting Engineers Group, Tractebel Engineering Pvt ltd, and Aarvee Associates, BARSYL etc.

The DPR will take at least a year for completion and another 6 months to get approval from the government as it needs the authorization of the BMRCL board, the finance department and the state cabinet.

The Sarjapur line was previously decided as a part of Metro Phase-3 and an announcement for this was made in the 2018-2019 budget. But, in 2021, the DPR for the Phase-3 line was finalised and only two corridors were declared.

On 4th March 2022, CM Bommai in his speech said that action would be taken to prepare a DPR in 2022-2023 for the development of a new 37 km long new Metro line linking Sarjapur to Hebbal via Agara, Koramangala and Diary Circle at an estimated cost of Rs 15,000 crore.

DTL to provide uninterrupted power supply to Delhi-Meerut RRTS

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Delhi government’s transmission company DTL will set up a separate substation at Maharani Bagh to provide uninterrupted power supply to the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and semi high-speed Delhi-Varanasi Rail Corridor, officials said on Tuesday.

The tender for a 620 MVA dedicated substation is expected to be soon floated by Delhi Transco Limited (DTL), they said, PTI reported.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is establishing India’s first rapid rail transit system between Delhi and Meerut which is expected to be completed by 2025. The RRTS train is designed to run at a speed of 180 kmph making them the fastest train in the country.

The 813-km Delhi-Varanasi high speed rail corridor is likely to be commissioned by 2029.

COIMBATORE (Metro Rail News): Country’s first-ever private train between Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore to Maharashtra’s Shirdi under the “Bharat Gaurav scheme” of the Indian Railways was flagged off on Tuesday 15 June. maiden service from Coimbatore North to Sainagar Shirdi. 

The train left Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore North on Tuesday at 06:00 PM and is scheduled to reach Maharashtra’s Shirdi on Thursday at 07:25 AM. The train is operated by a private operator- South Rail Star under the Bharat Gaurav scheme and it will halt at Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Yelahanka, Dharmavaram, Mantralayam Road and Wadi before reaching its destination.

After a one-day halt, the train will resume its journey from Shirdi’s Sai Nagar on Friday and reach Coimbatore North on Saturday at 12 pm. “The train will cover several historical destinations on the route while giving the passengers an insight into the cultural heritage of the country,” the tweet by Ministry of Tourism stated.

The private train includes services and facilities like doctor on board, private security along with Railway Police Force. The registered service provider has refurbished the interiors of the coaches and all the coaches are manned with round-the-clock cleaning staff and a whole team of service professionals to offer passengers a wholesome experience, according to the Ministry of Railways.

M.A. Siddique I.A.S. MD of Chennai Metro Rail Limited Inspected Phase – II project

Viaduct Works are on full swing at Poonamallee Bypass Road, Kattupakkam. During the inspection, the Managing Director visited the Casting Yard at Kollapancheri, Poonamallee Taluk in Thiruvallur District wherein the Managing Director inspected the U-Girder works, Pier Cap works and Quality Lab.

Work is underway to construct the 2.3 km Viaduct from Kumananchavadi junction to Karayanchavadi on the road between Poonamallee and Porur. Following this, the work of erecting Piers in the Kattupakkam area is also in full swing. Steps have been taken to complete all these works on a war footing basis.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has launched “StartUps for Railways” today 14th June at the Rail Bhavan in New Delhi.

This program will provide an enabling framework for motivating & encouraging Indian innovators to come forward for the development of innovative technologies, products & technological solutions. To harness technological & operational benefits offered by next-gen innovators, the Indian Railways Innovation Policy aims at providing fund support upto Rs. 150 lakh.

Speaking at the event, Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the prolonged discussions over the integration of technology into Indian Railways have taken a firm shape in form of this initiative launched today.

The Railways Minister requested the startups to use this opportunity for which he has also assured them of support from the Indian Railways in the form of a 50 per cent capital grant, assured market, scale and ecosystem.

Salient features of the Indian Railway Innovation Policy are:-

–Grant up to Rs. 1.5 Crore to innovator on equal sharing basis with provision of milestone-wise payment;

–Complete process from floating of the problem statement to the development of the prototype is online with a defined timeline to make it transparent and objective;

He takes charge from Alain Spohr, who is retiring after 40 years of service with Alstom. Based in Bengaluru, he will be responsible for executing the Alstom in Motion (AiM) strategy, driving business expansion, as well as overseeing commercial and operational performance.

Olivier brings over two decades of experience in the transportation sector, contributing on some of the well-known infrastructure and railway projects across Asia and Europe. Prior to this, he was serving as the Managing Director of the East Asia cluster, within the Asia-Pacific region of Alstom.

Air to water generators installed in 3 Chennai Metro stations

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): To provide drinking water to the passengers on the Chennai metro stations, atmospheric water generators have been installed which convert air into water. The 41 metro stations in Chennai have installed reverse osmosis equipment which will dispense drinking water for the passengers on the concourse level.

The officials informed that they carried out a series of inspections before installing the dispensers on the concourse level. CMRL installed three such generators each costing Rs 6 lakh in three metro stations as part of a CSR project by their consultant.

These generators absorb moisture from the air’s humidity. It then passes through a condenser where the coils convert the water into water droplets, which are then disposed in a tank. The water is then ozonated by an ozone generator. Through a water dispenser, the water is delivered to commuters as regular and cold water from the tank.

Officials from the CMRL said the ozonated water is safe to drink. Officials said the system will also help in tackling the shortage of water in the city and that they now don’t have to depend on the water supply to purify and serve potable water to commuters.

According to sources, the officials don’t have plans to install this system in other stations as of now because they have to see whether it is cost effective to install on the other stations or not.

GHAZIABAD (Metro Rail News): The first trainset of India’s first RRTS has reached Duhai Depot today. This trainset was loaded on a trailer from the manufacturing plant located in Savli, Gujarat and brought to Duhai via road.

In its journey to reach Duhai Depot, the train has travelled through three states, Rajasthan, Haryana and finally Uttar Pradesh. All the 6 coaches of the trainset were loaded on six separate trailers. On reaching the Duhai depot, they were unloaded with the help of a crane and in the coming days, the trainset will be assembled in the depot itself.

Tracks have already been completed for its arrival at the Duhai depot and preparations are going on for the testing. For the operation of RRTS trains, an administrative building has been built in the Duhai depot itself.

The 17 km long priority section has five stations, Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai and Duhai Depot. NCRTC is planning to commence the trial runs on the priority section by the end of this year and to make it operational for the public by 2023.

The interiors along with the commuter-centric features of India’s first RRTS trains were unveiled on March 16, 2022, at the Duhai Depot, Ghaziabad. These RRTS trains will be the fastest trains in India with a design speed of 180km/h, operational speed of 160km/h and an average speed of 100 km /h.

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): M.A. Siddique has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). He was the Commissioner of Revenue Administration until now. Siddique will replace Pradeep Yadav, who has been posted as Secretary, Highways and Minor Ports, in place of Dheeraj Kumar, who would take charge as the Commissioner of Commercial Taxes.

Mr. Siddique is an IAS officer of Tamil Nadu Cadre belonging to the batch of 1995. He has served in various capacities in the Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India.

First TBM segment lowered for Kanpur metro’s corridor-1

KANPUR (Metro Rail News): Under the First Corridor of Kanpur Metro Rail Project (IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta), the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) segment was lowered on 12th June in the launching shaft constructed at Bada Chauraha. The segment was lowered after the Pooja ceremony at construction site in the presence of senior officials of UPMRC and the contracting agency. UPMRC is trying to start the construction of the tunnel till the end of this month or in the first week of the next month. The TBM selected for the tunnelling is a state-of-the-art machine designed for the geological condition of Kanpur.

The process of lowering of TBM had commenced with lowering of Middle shield weighing 120 tonne with the help of 400 tonne and 250-tonne heavy crawler cranes. This shield was placed on the cradle inside the shaft. After this Front shield, Tail shield and the Cutter head of the machine will also be lowered inside the rectangular shaft which has a length of about 21 meters, width of about 24 meters and a depth of about 17.5 meters. All these segments will be then aligned in the shaft and mechanical components and wires will be connected to complete the machine. The casting of precast concrete rings for the tunnel is going on since October 2021.

TBM 3

Two TBM machines will be launched from the launching shaft at Bada Chauraha, which will construct the tunnels in the direction of Nayaganj. Extensive instrumentation will be done throughout the underground stretch and continuous online and real-time monitoring will be done by a team of dedicated experts to ensure safety during TBM operation. The state of the art on board computerized tunnel guidance system will be provided in TBMs to ensure that the tunnelling is done as per the designed alignment to the highest level of accuracy. TBM shall be retrieved at Phoolbagh-Nayaganj station after building tunnel of 990m. The tunnel between Bada Churaha and Phoolbagh-Nayaganj metro stations shall be completed in approximately six months. After the retrieval, both machines will be re-launched from the shaft to be built at Chunniganj and the tunnels will be constructed through Naveen Market up to Bada Chauraha.

Congratulating the entire team of UPMRC on this occasion, Managing Director Kumar Keshav said, “Kanpur Metro Project has progressed fast towards underground construction by commencing lowering of first TBM in newly constructed shaft at Bada Chauraha Metro Station. This is a wonderful moment bringing pride to the whole team of UPMRC, General Consultants and Contractor Gulermak in executing such a difficult work in congested and busy area of Kanpur City. Soon, tunneling of Metro shall start in Kanpur.”

Presently, passenger services of Kanpur Metro are operational on the 9 KMs long Priority Section (IIT- Motijheel). Under the 23 KMs long Corridor-I (IIT-Naubasta), beyond Motijheel Metro Station; the underground stretch of the corridor is being constructed in two phases; the first one is comprising Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha & Nayaganj Metro Stations; and the second one is comprising Kanpur Central, Jhakarkati, and Transport Nagar Metro Stations. After this 7KMs long underground section, around 5KMs long section between Baradevi and Naubasta will be elevated.
