CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): The final pier for the 11.3-km Corridor-5 package in Phase 2 has been completed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). This achievement marks the end of the pier-construction phase and enables the project to concentrate on the viaduct and station work.
The CMRL finished Pier P814, a structure 25 metres high, close to the Medavakkam-1 Metro Station. This pier is the 513th and last one in the ECV-03 package. 1,130 piers have been completed as part of the 11.3-km package. The ECV-03 package runs from Ullagaram Metro Station to Elcot Metro Station and includes:

The AEON Consortium is the general consultant for the package, and the HCC-KEC Consortium is in charge of the construction work.

The construction work on the section lying between Pier P879 near Medavakkam Koot Road and Pier P868 along Semmozhi Salai was especially complex. In this area certain piers reach almost 29 metres and the Metro route also passes over the present Medavakkam Flyover at about the same height. The 57-metre steel girder span is included in the crossing and the engineers are building it along a sharp horizontal curve having a radius of approximately 125 metres.
The Medavakkam-1 and Medavakkam-2 stations in this area will also be about 29 metres above road level. The construction was carried out in areas that were busy and had heavy traffic as well as dense development. In order to carry out the work near and above the existing flyover, the CMRL and its contractors had to arrange for traffic diversions.
Work now shifts to viaducts and stations
The construction will then proceed to the next major stages when all 513 piers have been cast.
CMRL said work is continuing on:
- Erection of the remaining U-girders
- Construction of station buildings
- Other viaduct-related works
This achievement represents an important step for Chennai Metro Phase 2, even though a great deal of work still has to be carried out before the corridor can start operations.
