MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Thane’s long-awaited metro connectivity to Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar is moving closer to reality. With the Central Government approving the revised alignment on August 29, 2026, Mumbai’s suburban metro network is set to expand through Metro Line 5 and the proposed Line 5A, linking Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar.
The initial plan was a 24.90-km Metro Line 5 corridor connecting Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan. However, the project faced several challenges, including land acquisition, rehabilitation and resettlement issues, as well as conflicts between the proposed metro alignment and existing road infrastructure such as the Bhiwandi Bypass Flyover. These issues made construction difficult and contributed to delays.
Under the revised plan, the network has evolved into around 34 km of connectivity extending towards Ulhasnagar. Since the original alignment became increasingly difficult to implement in Bhiwandi’s dense and infrastructure-heavy urban environment, the MMRDA redesigned the corridor. The revised plan includes a short underground section in Bhiwandi to avoid the flyover conflict, while the extension towards Ulhasnagar will expand the metro’s reach across the region.
After Years of Delay, Why Did Line 5 Need a New Alignment?
The realignment is more than a technical correction. It is an important mass-transit alternative for an area heavily dependent on roads. Bhiwandi is one of the major warehousing and logistics centres of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with extensive commercial and industrial activity.

Meanwhile, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar have traditionally relied heavily on Central Railway, buses, autos and road transport. However, railway connectivity cannot address every movement within the wider urban region, particularly cross-city journeys.
The revised Line 5 and Line 5A will therefore create a new Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan–Ulhasnagar connection, reducing dependence on congested roads and existing railway routes for such journeys. The expansion also strengthens the wider regional metro network by connecting these rapidly developing suburbs with other major transport corridors.

The combined Line 5 and Line 5A project is estimated to cost ₹18,130.55 crore. The Thane–Bhiwandi section is nearing completion and is targeted to open around December 2026, while the extended network towards Kalyan and Ulhasnagar is targeted for 2030–31.
Mumbai Metro Line 5 will provide interconnectivity with the ongoing Metro Line 4, proposed Metro line 12 (Kalyan–Taloja), as well as with the existing Central Railway network. The corridor is expected to provide rail-based access to commercial areas, government establishments and important geographical landmarks across Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan.
Mumbai Metro Line 5A is from Durgadi in Kalyan towards Ulhasnagar, designed to bring metro connectivity deeper into the densely populated Kalyan–Ulhasnagar belt.
