BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): On 11 May 2026, a Joint venture of the Government of Karnataka and the Ministry of Railways, K-RIDE, signed a contract with ICF (Integral Coach Factory), a Chennai-based production unit under the Ministry of Railways, for the production and manufacturing of 153 air-conditioned “Broad Gauge Metro Metro Type Coaches” required for all the corridors of BSTP (Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project).
According to the contract procured by ICF on May 6, the coaches are to be delivered within the next 18 months. The main objective of the set deadline is the opening of the Chikkabanavara – Yeswanthpur section, which comes under Corridor II. As clarified by K-RIDE, this project is also in line with the timeline instructed by PM Modi during the “PRAGATI” review meeting held in December 2025.
ICF wasn’t just awarded the contract for the manufacturing of the A/C coaches but it is also responsible for:
- The detailed design and completed manufacturing of the rolling stock.
- The quality inspection, integration, testing, and commissioning.
- Obtaining necessary statutory approvals from RDSO.
- smooth coordination and interfacing with the designated contracts for Signalling Traction, Power Supply and Platform Screen Doors.
- Fulfilment of RAMS ( Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) standards is mandatory for the successful operations of the corridors.
The total cost of this project is Rs 1,513.75 crore. This move is set to provide a reliable and sustainable transportation system to the people of Bengaluru.
Mr. Laxman Singh, the Managing Director of K-RIDE, stated that, “This work order is a milestone for the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project. Through this partnership with ICF, we are ensuring that the required train coaches will be available by the time the track and systems infrastructure work for different Corridors is completed. This synchronisation will help deliver a world-class suburban rail network to the citizens of Bengaluru without any delay, fulfilling the vision of sustainable urban transport and easing the city’s traffic congestion.”
