Central Government approved Chennai Metro Phase 2

Chennai (Metro Rail News): India’s Central government cabinet on 3rd October finally approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Chennai Metro Phase 2 spanning 116.1 km with 3 corridors in total. 

MK Stalin, chief minister of Tamil Nadu submitted the memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding funds from the central government. Furthermore, the memo highlighted three issues that have been consistently demanded by the state including the 50% equity in sharing the metro phase 2 project.

The total cost of Chennai Metro Phase 2 project is Rs.63.346 crores out of which the central government will be funding the with Rs. 7,425 crore. While the ₹33,593 crore will be financed through different banks. Furthermore,  The remaining amount of Rs.22.228 will be provided by the state government. 

Chennai Metro Phase 2

The Chennai Metro Project was approved by the Tamil Nadu government in 2019 with an estimated cost of Rs 61.843 crores. 

Chennai Metro Phase 2 consists of 3 corridors spanning 116.1 km with a December 2025 deadline. 

Line-3 (Purple Line)Madhavaram station– SIPCOT 2 station 45.4 kmTotal No. of Stations: 49 
Line-4 (Orange Line):Light House station – Poonamallee Bus Depot station 26.09 km Total no. of Stations: 28
Line-5 (Red Line):Madhavaram station – Sholinganallur station 44.6 km Total no. of Stations: 48 

Recent Developments In Chennai Metro Phase 2 

Recently, Alstom Transport unveiled the first 36 train set for Line 4 (Orange Line) of Chennai Metro Phase 2 at their Sri City, Andhra Pradesh facility in the presence of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).

Another development for Chennai Metro Phase 2 was recorded when L&T’s TBM Kaveri achieved breakthrough at Adyar Junction Station under package TU-02. 

Furthermore, BEML Ltd. was declared as the lowest bidder to supply 210 coaches for the 116.1 km Chennai Metro’s Phase 2 project by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL).
