Mumbai Metro Line 7A

Under Construction Operator: MMRDA Length: 3.42 km Updated: Official site ↗

As of 17 Oct 2026, Mumbai Metro Line 7A is under construction. Latest news: 14 Oct 2026.

Mumbai Metro Line 7A is a 3.42 km extension of Line 7 (Red Line) from Gundavali in Andheri East to Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, built by MMRDA. It adds two stations, Airport Colony (elevated) and CSMIA Terminal 2 (underground). As of October 2026 it is not open: tunnelling is complete, but work near Airport Colony is held up by an airport height-clearance issue.

Why it matters

Line 7A gives the Red Line a direct rail link into the international airport terminal. At CSMIA Terminal 2 it meets the underground Line 3 (Aqua Line), with the two stations linked at concourse level, so passengers from the western suburbs on Lines 2A, 7 and the future Line 9 can reach the airport or change to Line 3 without using the Western Express Highway. MMRDA has said the link could cut airport travel times by 30 to 60 minutes.

Key facts

  • Operator: MMRDA
  • Length: 3.42 km, 3 stations
  • Status (October 2026): Under construction, not open (October 2026). Twin-tunnel boring finished in July 2025 and the elevated viaduct was complete by February 2026, but work on the elevated stretch near Airport Colony has been held up since 2025 because the overhead electrification needs more height than the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has cleared. MMRDA is awaiting AAI's final technical assessment; no revised opening date has been announced.
  • Cost: About ₹812 crore (escalated estimate, reported 2025)

Frequently asked questions

Is Mumbai Metro Line 7A open?

No. As of October 2026 the line is still under construction and no opening date has been announced.

What is the route of Metro Line 7A?

It runs about 3.42 km from Gundavali in Andheri East, the current end of Line 7, to Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. About 0.93 km is elevated and 2.49 km is in twin tunnels.

How many stations does Line 7A have?

Two new stations: Airport Colony (elevated, in Vile Parle East) and CSMIA Terminal 2 (underground).

Why is Line 7A delayed?

The overhead electrification on the elevated stretch near Airport Colony needs up to about 2.4 to 2.5 m more height than the Airports Authority of India has permitted. MMRDA is waiting for AAI's final technical assessment, and part of the viaduct may have to be rebuilt if extra height is not allowed.

Will Line 7A connect to Metro Line 3?

Yes. The CSMIA Terminal 2 station of Line 7A runs parallel to the Line 3 (Aqua Line) station at the airport and the two are linked at concourse level.

Who is building Line 7A?

MMRDA is the implementing agency. Civil works, including the tunnels, ramp and both stations, are under package CA-48 awarded to J Kumar Infraprojects in September 2019.
