Kolkata Metro Orange Line

Operational Operator: Metro Railway, Kolkata (Indian Railways); built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) Length: 9.8 km Since: 15/03/2024 Updated: Official site ↗

As of 17 Oct 2026, Kolkata Metro Orange Line is operational (since 15 Mar 2024). Latest news: 21 Oct 2026.

The Kolkata Metro Orange Line (Line 6) is the New Garia to Airport corridor along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, Salt Lake and New Town, planned at about 29.9 km with 24 stations. As of October 2026, 9.8 km with 9 stations is open between Kavi Subhash and Beleghata. Trial runs on the next three-station stretch to IT Centre (Sector V) began on 10 October 2026.

Why it matters

The Orange Line is Kolkata's first metro along the EM Bypass, a corridor previously served only by road. Once it reaches IT Centre, commuters from New Garia and Garia will get a direct rail link to the Salt Lake Sector V IT hub, a trip Metro Railway estimates at about 30 minutes. The full line will connect south Kolkata with New Town and the airport, where it meets the Yellow Line at Jai Hind Bimanbandar.
