Delhi Metro | PM Modi & President Hollande take Metro ride to Gurgaon and back

New Delhi: French President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday laid the foundation stone for an interim secretariat of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Gurgaon. However, what caught everyone’s attention was the “eco-friendly” metro ride that the two leaders took to Gurgaon and back. But this ‘special ride’ left commuters inconvenienced.

A special six-coach train was arranged for Modi and the French president in close coordination with security agencies, said an official statement from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Indian officials and the French delegation also accompanied the two leaders.

The leaders boarded the train from Race Course station shortly after 3 pm.

Forty-five minutes prior to this, the station’s gates were shut for other commuters. Sources said platforms at Race Course, Arjangarh, Guru Dronacharya and Jor Bagh Metro stations were also cordoned off when the delegation arrived.

“They boarded the train from Race Course station for Arjangarh at 3.16 pm. On their trip back, they got in at Guru Dronacharya and got off at Jor Bagh at 5.20 pm. Overall, train operations were normal throughout this movement,” said the statement.

A spokesperson said the DMRC did not issue any instructions to stop commuters, adding that it must have been a call taken by security personnel. An official said there was some disruption on the Yellow Line owing to the high-profile ride. “Due to security considerations and a directive from the Delhi Police, services had to be regulated for a brief period,” he said.

However, DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said it was ensured that public services were not affected.

“The special train was planned in such a manner that the VIPs did not have to wait at all and subsequent trains ran as per schedule.”

Kochi Metro | CM Oommen Chandy flags off first trial run of Kochi Metro Train

Kochi: Expected to ease the travel woes in Kerala’s commercial capital, the first trial run of Kochi metro was flagged off by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at a test track set up at its Muttom railway yard near Aluva here.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Principal Advisor, E Sreedharan, state ministers Aryadan Muhammed, V K Ibrahim Kunju, K Babu and Anoop Jacob attended the function, organised to inaugurate the trial run of the Rs 5,180 crore Kochi Metro project, held at the 900 metre specially set up track at the yard.

Flagging-off the trial run of the urban public transport system, Chandy said “it is a proud moment for the Keralites living across the world. First service of the Kochi Metro will start on November 1, the day state of Kerala was created.

Noting that the foundation stone for the Kochi Metro was laid on September 13, 2012, the Chief Minister said the modern transport system “is being created in record time.”

Chandy also hailed the role played by Metro man Sreedharan in making the dream project of Kerala a reality.

“People of Kerala are grateful to Sreedharan,” the Chief Minister said, adding, the Kochi Metro is a feather in his cap.

Meanwhile, BJP came down heavily on the state government, alleging that the Chief Minister was playing politics over the development works being undertaken with the assistance of central government.

“It is a political stunt by the Chief Minister.

Central government has allocated Rs 5000 crore for the function. But not a single Central minister was invited for the function. It is cheap politics being played just ahead of Assembly polls,” senior BJP leader V Muraleedharan said.
