TAMIL NADUR (Metro Rail News): Tamil Nadu’s railway infrastructure has received a fresh push with the commissioning of a new rail link, upgrades at five Amrit Bharat Stations and three rail flyovers, involving an investment of around ₹750 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the projects to the nation during his visit to the state on October 10.
The projects address different pressure points across the network, from passenger amenities and port connectivity to train movement at congested sections.
New line brings Karaikal Port onto the railway network
The biggest investment among the projects is the 23 km Karaikal-Peralam railway line, developed at a cost of more than ₹550 crore. It links Karaikal with the Mayiladuthurai-Tiruvarur rail corridor, creating another route for passenger and freight movement in the region.

The port connection is a key part of the project. Rail access can help move bulk commodities, including coal, fertilisers and food grains, between Karaikal Port and inland destinations. This could give freight operators an additional transport option and support industries that depend on these supplies.
The line may also make journeys to regional destinations easier, including the Saneeswarar Temple at Thirunallar. The extent of these benefits will depend on the passenger and freight services introduced on the route.
Five railway stations receive more than ₹70 crore in upgrades
Five stations – Ambasamudram, Palani, Namakkal, Paramakkudi and Vellore Cantonment – have been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Southern Railway CPRO SN Narain identified the stations included in the inauguration.
The work, costing over ₹70 crore, covers improvements to station buildings, platforms, waiting areas, parking, passenger information systems and accessibility for disabled citizens, including ramps, lifts and accessible toilets at designated locations.
The upgrades are intended to improve the passenger experience at these stations. However, their day-to-day value will depend on maintenance and how well the facilities meet local passenger demand.
Railway Flyovers aim to reduce train conflicts near Coimbatore
The remaining projects are three rail flyovers built at a combined cost of more than ₹120 crore. They are designed to address congestion on busy railway routes, particularly around Coimbatore and nearby areas.
Rail flyovers allow train movements that would otherwise conflict to use separate levels. This can reduce operational bottlenecks, help trains move more efficiently and improve the flow of road traffic where level crossings cause delays.
The investment combines passenger-focused improvements with infrastructure intended to support freight and increase railway capacity. The new line creates a link to Karaikal Port, while the flyovers target operational constraints. The gains will ultimately depend on service planning, traffic levels and the effective use of the upgraded infrastructure.
