NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Indian Railways has approved projects worth ₹675 crore for signalling upgrades, including Kavach 4.0, electronic interlocking and a bypass line to improve passenger and freight movement. All the announcements made through PIB press release on 1 September 2026.
The ₹170-crore Kavach 4.0 project will cover the remaining 712 route km (Rkm) of the Moradabad Division in Uttar Pradesh, a key operational unit of Northern Railway.
A ₹272-crore bypass line will be developed between Adra and Joychandipahar in West Bengal to boost freight movement. The remaining ₹232 crore will fund electronic interlocking at 21 stations in Samastipur Division, Bihar.

Indian Railways has approved the deployment of its indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, Kavach 4.0, on the remaining 712 route km (Rkm) of the Moradabad Division of Northern Railway at a cost of ₹170 crore.
The system will enhance operational safety by preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applying brakes when necessary, controlling train speeds in critical situations and reducing the risk of collisions. The implementation of Kavach 4.0 will provide an advanced safety layer for train operations across the section.
₹272 crore bypass line to boost freight capacity of West Bengal
Indian Railways approved the construction of an 11 km bypass line between Adra and Joychandipahar under South Eastern Railway in West Bengal at a total of ₹272 crore.It will separate freight movement from existing operations, reduce congestion and improve the movement of Industrial Goods.
The project will provide dedicated path segregation and a bi-directional connection to the upcoming third line. This will help in enabling the movement of 6.065 freight rakes per day.
The bypass will help handle increasing freight traffic, particularly movements linked to SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited) and BCCL(Bharat Coking Coal Limited). It is expected to allow additional freight traffic of about 8.88 million tonnes per annum after completion.
The current capacity of Adra-Joychandipahar section 47.50%, is expected to increase up to 56.45% by 2028-2029, through the new bypass line project.
₹233 crore, electronic interlocking at Samastipur Division, Bihar
Indian Railways has approved the provision of Electronic Interlocking (EI) at 21 stations of Samastipur Division of East Central Railway (ECR) in Bihar at a total cost of ₹233 crore.
The approved works include replacement of existing Panel interlocking with Electronic Interlocking at 21 stations of the division.The provision of Electronic Interlocking will modernise the signalling arrangements at the identified stations and provide a more advanced signalling infrastructure in connection with Kavach works.
