50 cities to get metro rails for Rs 500,000cr

The Government of India has finalised a plan to augment and launch mass rapid transportation systems across 50 cities to minimise commuter woes and ease pollution concerns.Prime minister Narendra Modi has already cleared a proposal put up by the ministry of urban development, estimated to cost Rs 500,000 crore over the next four to six years. The Union government plans to share the cost of implementing the project with the respective state governments through special purpose vehicles.And official in the prime minister’s office, who is not permitted to identify himself, said that prospective partners from South Korea, China, Japan, Germany, France, Russia and Canada have evinced interest in participating in the project.“Every metro rail system would be very important, given our plan to build 100 smart cities and ensure environmentally sustainable transportation facilities,” the official said.Modi is learnt to have specially discussed the metro rail projects with CEOs of top Chinese companies in Shanghai and Korean firms in Seoul during his recent visit to both the countries.Most of the metro rail projects would be implemented through special purpose vehicles (SPVs) in which both state governments and the centre would have equity stakes. While most JVs are being planned as 50:50 ventures, certain innovations are also expected in some of the new projects where municipal corporations have expressed their desire to join the proposed SPVs as equity partners.Already, some 13 metro projects have either been completed or are in various stages of completion. These include networks in Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Che­n­nai, Jaipur, Mumbai (both metro, monorail), Kolkata and Kochi.Tier-II cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Gurgaon, Patna, Ahmedabad, Surat, Indore, Nagpur and Coimbatore have also been identified for setting up dedicated metro networks, while proposals are being evaluated for Chandigarh, Bhopal, Ludhiana and Kozikode.A joint venture between Russia’s Mosmetrostroy and Gammon India has been implementing the Chennai corridor that is expected to be operational in the next few months and is likely to be inaugurated by chief minister J Jayalalithaa who returned to office on Saturday.The Hyderabad metro, where Larsen & Turbo is the main concessionaire, is reportedly on schedule and is likely to roll out by October.The latest to join the proposed list is Vijayawada with a link to Amaravathi, the new state capital of Andhra Pradesh, with an investment of Rs 6,823 crore. Delhi Metro’s founding honcho E Sreedharan is overseeing the project.“Cities wanting to set up metro rail projects may have to compete and come up with innovative and compelling proposals,” the PMO official quoted earlier said.Several innovations are being planned for implementing mass rapid corridors in different cities. For example, project authorities in Nagpur have been evaluating the possibility of running the network on solar power. Nagpur metro, where both French and German agencies have been in the reckoning, is looking at cost-effective project financing, both through equity and debt.According to preliminary projections, at least 40 per cent of the required power for operating the system would be sourced from dedicated solar power plants. Land acquisition for the project has commenced earlier this month.

Under this campaign, special housekeeping and environmental awareness activities are being undertaken to train site personnel on the ways of keeping the environment clean and green.The Managing Director of LMRC, Shri Kumar Keshav, personally made a visit to the Metro construction sites to see the overall preparedness and conduct of various activities planned there. M/s Larsen & Toubro Ltd. arranged a mass level housekeeping campaign wherein special instructions were given on ways to spruce up the environment.The workers working at project sites are being given training on segregation of waste at the construction sites. In addition, they are also being trained on environmental awareness issues.Simultaneously, the Lucknow Metro is also imparting regular training on safety to all its workers and engineers. Delhi Metro: DMRC gets its first driver-less train from Korea for phase-3 network

New Delhi: Delhi Metro today received its first driver-less train, equipped with several advanced features, from a Korea-based manufacturer, which will ply on sections of Phase-III of the network, set to be operational by next year end.The six-coach train that was ferried to India by sea, arrived at Gujarat’s Mundhra port and was brought by road to Delhi on specially-made trailers.A total of 20 such train sets of Hyundai Rotem will be manufactured in South Korea’s Changwan by the end of this year while the remaining 61 are being manufactured at the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) plant in Bengaluru, the DMRC said.They would run on the over 58 km-long Majlish Park-Shiv Vihar (Line 7) and the over 38 km-long Janakpuri (West)- Botanical Garden (Line 8) corridors of the Phase-III, and both these sections are expected to be operational by the end of 2016.These new trains of Delhi Metro have undergone significant technological as well as eco-friendly upgrades and many additional features have been added to increase passenger comfort.They are designed for a maximum speed of 95 kmph and operational speed of 85 kmph, Delhi Metro said.A DMRC official said that, although, initially drivers will be deputed for operating the trains they would be gradually withdrawn to move to Unattended Train Operation (UTO).“These new-generation trains are suitable to eventually run on UTO mode, that is, train operators will not be required to operate these trains and the Operations Control Centres (OCC) of the Delhi Metro system will directly regulate the movement of the trains,” he said.Each coach can accommodate maximum 380 passengers, which translates to 2,280 passengers in each train set of 6 coaches. The cabin-less trains would be able to accommodate 40 commuters more in a six coach train as the driver’s cab will not be required in such trains.“These trains would be more energy efficient than the earlier trains of Delhi Metro because of improved design features such as better regeneration of energy during braking, energy efficient sub systems like LED lighting and air conditioning systems,” the DMRC said.

Lucknow Metro: Metro train trial run from December 2016, to be completed in 3 months

Lucknow (LKO): The trial run of metro train and its signalling system would begin from December 2016. It is likely to be completed within three months, unlike in Jaipur where trials were completed in one and a half years, said Kumar Keshav, MD, Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation.“Our work on the metro rail project is on track and we will complete it before December 2016, or may be before that. The metro will become operational in March 2017,” said Keshav.He said in Delhi too, the trial runs for metro were conducted within three months and services commenced after that.The signalling system used by the LMRC would be one of the most advanced in the world.The integrated system would help monitor the movement of metro trains on various tracks.The tenders for procurement of metro tracks would be floated on June 10 while technical bid for rolling stock would be done within a week, Keshav added. The tender process would be completed within a fortnight. He said that all 476 girders and 259 pier caps would be installed in a year’s time.For the construction of underground metro route from Charbagh to KD Singh ‘Babu’ stadium, a meeting was held with Systra India Limited, which would finalise the designs of three underground metro stations within four months.

Kochi Metro: DMRC ready to fix imported rails for Kochi Metro Rail

Kochi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will start placing the rails on Kochi Metro’s viaduct, starting July 15. The Metro agency is awaiting sanction from the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) of the Indian Railways to carry out the work.“It’s mandatory to obtain sanction. The rails and design have to meet the specifications of RDSO. We have already approached railways. We expect to get it before July 15,” said DMRC project director Dani Thomas. Each 18m-long rail has to be lifted and placed on the viaduct. “These have to be welded together. But, we are not keen on doing such high precision work during heavy rains,” he added.The Kochi Metro requires about 7,000 metric tonnes of head-hardened rails. According to Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) about 3,500 tonnes of rails for the project has already been imported. The remaining consignment will reach by the end of the year.Imported head-hardened rails are more durable than those used by the Indian Railways. There are sharper curves on a Metro line compared with the regular railway system. The rails can withstand pressure exerted by Metro trains that will be running every five minutes. These rails are being imported from France.IRCON has secured the contract for laying rails from Aluva to Pettah. The rails are now being transported from the Cochin Port to Kochi Metro’s yards. “The transportation is being done at night to avoid traffic congestion,” said a DMRC spokesperson.However, DMRC would opt for regular rails used by the Indian Railways at Muttom yard as trains would be moving at a slow speed.The Muttom yard is expected be ready by November. The yard will have a 1km-long test track, facilities for unloading coaches and a stability shed. “We had a tough time while carrying out land-levelling works. All those issues have been sorted out and, currently, work at Muttom is progressing quickly,” said Dani Thomas.The third rail, which provides power to the train, has been imported from Germany. Kochi Metro uses the third rail traction system instead of overhead power lines. About 18,000m conductor rails have been imported.“Around 200 bundles of third rail has arrived in Kochi. Each bundle contains six pieces. This is required for the 18km Metro stretch from Aluva to Maharaja’s College. Our technical experts will inspect the consignment and take delivery,” said a DMRC official.

Delhi Metro: DMRC may open long waited ITO metro station in this month

New Delhi: Safety inspection of the upcoming Mandi House-ITO section of Delhi Metro today resulted in long queues and crowded trains on the Violet Line as services were briefly affected on that section.The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) started the inspection at around 11 am and the exercise continued till 12.15 pm. During that period, services between the Central Secretariat and Mandi House stations operated on a single line, leading to a slowing down of train movement and crowding.Trains leaving towards ITO station from Mandi House generated curiosity among commuters, who flooded the security personnel with queries.“The result of the CMRS inspection is awaited.

Chennai: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has received the final approval for starting the operations anytime now after being subjected to various tests and clearances. A top official working in the office of the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), Bengaluru said, “We have given the authorisation for starting commercial operations. ”

“We have given some instructions on precautions that they may have to follow,” he added.

Agra: The local administration has given its approval for two Metro corridors in the city – from Sikandra crossing to Trident Hotel and Agra Cantonment Station to District Court.Metro in the first stretch will pass through Institute of Mental Health and Hospital (IMHH), St John’s College, S N Medical College, Heeng ki Mandi, Agra Fort, Fatehabad Road and Circuit House. The second route will cross Sadar Bazar, Pratap Pur crossing, M G Road and Hari Parwat localities.Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), the company shortlisted to plan and prepare a detailed project report for Metro in the city, will now study the areas which require underground and elevated routes.A 16-member committee, headed by Agra divisional commissioner Pradeep Bhatnagar, has approved the proposal in principle on Thursday.Ishtiaq Ahmad, chief town planner at the Agra Development Authority (ADA), said, “The routes will be a combination of underground and elevated corridors. In most likelihood, the stretch between IMHH and S N Medical College will be an underground one. As far as the second route is concerned, there is a plan to cover areas beyond the District Court. For this, we have two options. The route could either be stretched to Dayal Bagh Temple or reach Kalindi Vihar via National Highway 2 (NH2). RITES will tell us which option is more feasible in a week’s time.”“Total length of two routes is 25km. It would be built at a cost of Rs 200 crore per kilometer for the elevated sections, and Rs 450 crore per kilometer for the underground stretch,” the ADA official further said.RITES will prepare a detailed project report after concluding with the engineering survey.
