NHSRCL Completes 100 Km of Viaduct and 250 Kms of Pier Erection on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The NHSRCL on Thursday informed that it has already achieved a cumulative milestone of completing 103.24 Km (s) of elevated viaduct and 251.40  Km(s) of Pier erection work on the prestigious Mumbai -Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project.

Railways Minister Sh Ashwini Vaishnav tweeted about it on his official X handle. The tweet informs about the update on the MAHSR project until the 21st of November. 

Viaducts

According to NHSRCL, the 100 km long viaduct comprises a 40 m long full-span box and segment girders. The viaducts are supported on piers measuring 10-20 meters in height with a circular diameter of 4-5 meters.

Piers 

250 Km(s) of pier work has also been completed on the Bullet train project. The project entails the construction of more than 465 km (s) of an elevated viaduct out of a total length of 508 km (s) of the MAHSR project.

Bridges 

The viaducts include bridges constructed over six rivers of Gujarat: 

  1. Par River (Valsad District)
  2. Purna River (Navsari District) 
  3. Mindhola River (Navsari District) 
  4. Ambika River (Navsari District) 
  5. Auranga River (Valsad District) 
  6. Venganiya River (Navsari District) 

Noise Barriers 

NHSRCL has also begun with the installation of noise barriers along the route of the bullet train to reflect and distribute the sound arising out of the high speed of the bullet train. Based on Shinkansen Technology, the noise barriers would be 2-meter high and 1-meter wide concrete panels. These will be erected on either side of the route. 

Tracks 

As per the NHSRCL, laying the Reinforced Concrete (RC) track bed has also started in Surta. It’s the first time a J-slab ballastless track system has been employed in India.

UPMRC Finishes Casting of 200th Pillar in Baradevi Naubasta Elevated Section of Kanpur Metro 

KANPUR (Metro Rail News): Metro construction work of about 5 km long Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section under Corridor-1 (IIT to Naubasta) of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project is progressing quickly. A total of 276 pillars had to be constructed in the section, of which 200 pillars have been completed. UPMRC completed the casting of the 200th pillar last night. Five metro stations will be built in the said section: Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Boudh Nagar and Naubasta.

Congratulating the engineers of UPMRC in this regard, Managing Director Shri Sushil Kumar said, “The civil construction of Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section of Kanpur Metro Project is going on at a fast pace. We have completed 200 piers of this section and soon the work of all pile caps and pier caps will also be completed. After starting commercial service on the priority section (IIT to Motijheel) within the stipulated time in December, 2021, we are now progressing on time in the balance sections of Corridor 1 and all the work is being completed within the stipulated time.”

Construction works on the Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section commenced on 8 August 2022, and the first pier cap was laid in this section on 27 December 2022. The first U-girder of this section was laid on 21 January 2023. Erecting Pi-girders at this section’s Baradevi and Kidwai Nagar stations is also progressing quickly. Metro stations are to be constructed on the base of these Pi-girders. On 10 November 2023, the first Cross Arm was erected at the under-construction Naubasta station.

At present, under the Corridor-1 of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, apart from the Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section, construction work is also progressing at a fast pace on the Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section and Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section.

Noida Authority Seeks Nod from the State Government to Prepare New DPR for Noida-Greater Noida West Metro

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail Mews): The Prime Minister’s Office has suggested changes in the DPR of the Noida- Greater Noida West Metro. 

Metro for Greater Noida West 

In its DPR, the Noida authority proposed building a 14.9 km-long metro line starting from Aqua Line’s Noida Sector 51 metro station. The DPR also included the proposal to connect the Aqua Line’s Sector 51 metro station with the Blue Line’s Sector 51 Metro Station through an elevator. 

Rejection 

The PMO has rejected the DPR for it doesn’t ensure seamless connectivity of the 14.9 Km long line originating from Sector 51 Aqua line with the Blue Line’s Sector 51 metro station as per its analysis. 

New Route 

This has come as a shock to the government of Uttar Pradesh. The Noida authority must find an alternative route to facilitate the metro line. The PMO has asked the Noida authority to change the route of the greater Noida west metro to ensure seamless connectivity with the blue line of the Delhi metro. 

New route Suggested 

The PMO has suggested originating the new route from Blue Line’s Noida Sector 61 station to reach Greater Noida West via Noida Sector 71, 72, Garhi Chowkhandi Village and Parthala Bridge. This has allowed the Noida authority to explore a new route to Noida extension rather than one originating from Noida’s Sector 51. 

Approval from the State Government 

Noida authority has requested the state government of Uttar Pradesh to permit it to prepare a new DPR for the Noida- Greater Noida West Metro link in compliance with the route proposed by the PMO.

L&T Emerges as The Lowest Bidder for Patna-Bihar Museum’s Tunnel Contract 

PATNA (Metro Rail News): L&T has emerged as the lowest bidder in the contract bidding, aiming to construct a pedestrian tunnel connecting Patna Museum and Bihar Museum. 

Specifications of the Tunnel 

The tunnel specified in Package PC-08R connecting Patna Museum and Bihar Museum will be 1.5 Km long and 16.5 meters deep. It will be bored by a TBM with a diameter of 8 meters. 

Facilities 

The tunnel will be equipped with air conditioners showcasing art across the ends. It will have battery-operated Golf carts, a security checkpoint, and service elevators and restrooms. 

Location

It will be built between Bailey Road and Chajju Bagh to specify the location. The pedestrian tunnel will be located above the twin tunnel, on Bailey Roa, of Patna Metro’s Line 1, running between Danapur Cantonment and Khemni Chak, with a vertical clearance of 6.5 meters. 

Scope of Work 

The scope of work under Package PC-08R includes the Design and Construction of the Single Tunnel, Fire Escapes, Ancillary building, and Entry/Exit building, including Architectural Finishing Work, Water Supply, Sanitary Installation, and drainage Works at Patna.

As per the re-invited bids estimated by DMRC, the estimated cost of building the tunnel amounted to Rs. 426.88 crore, with a deadline of 900 days to complete the work after issuing a Letter of Acceptance (LoA). 

Expected Developments 

The technical evaluation for the bids will be held in the coming weeks, and further, the LoA will be issued with a deadline to complete the project in the deadline itself. This will significantly boost the museums by offering them many visitors owing to its integration with the metro system. 

DMRC

After the approval of the project in May 2022 at an estimated cost of Rs 373 Crore, the Bihar government’s Urban Development and Housing Department (UDHD) signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the development of the Tunnel. 

Patna Metro 

Patna Metro is the first mass rapid transit system proposed for the capital city of Bihar, Patna. The Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC), a public company established in February 2019, is developing the project. In February 2016 and 2019, the state and central government approved the project, respectively.

The initial stage will have five Patna Metro stations operational by March 2025. The Patna MRTS, developed through a Public-Private Partnership model, is projected to incur a cost of ₹133,657.7 million (US$1.7 billion).

Revolutionizing Railway Maintenance: Alstom’s Digital Innovations and Sustainable Initiatives 

Metro Rail News conducted an in-person interview with Mr. Anil Kumar Saini, Managing Director of Rolling Stock at Alstom, India, at Saharanpur Depot, where the WAG12 Locomotives ( Wide gauge, Alternating Current, Goods traffic locomotive-12) are undergoing maintenance. 

He talks about Alstom’s innovative approach to predictive maintenance in the rapidly advancing digital landscape of railway applications. He sheds light on the strategic placement of depot maintenance facilities, emphasising job creation and diversity. Addressing the skill gap in the workforce, he discusses internship trends and ongoing skill-building programs. The conversation concludes with Alstom’s commitment to sustainability, local MSME support, and openness to future opportunities in India.

Here are the Edited excerpts: 

01. How are you leveraging digital technology for predictive maintenance over here? Both aspects are pertinent.

Your inquiry addresses a vital issue as digitalisation advances quickly in railway applications. Generally, railway vehicles have numerous components, e.g. power, electrical, pneumatic and mechanical parts. High-quality sensors are now available to connect to various equipment to collect data/parameters related to the health of a particular piece of equipment. These sensors and geotagging methods enable us to gather all data/parameters in real-time while the rail vehicle operates in the field. This data is then fed into a digital asset management system that we refer to as Health Hub. With the help of Health Hub, we assist the train driver/loco pilot in the event of any troubleshooting requirements in the field. We can optimise our maintenance schedule by leveraging this data and moving towards predictive maintenance. This also helps us optimise the maintenance effort and improve the availability & reliability of the fleet.

02. Could you explain the strategy behind placing the depot maintenance in Saharanpur? You’ve also mentioned opening a depot maintenance in Nagpur. Will it provide the same facility, or are there any improvements in maintaining the locomotives?

The determination of Saharanpur’s depot maintenance location is made by Indian Railways, based on their comprehensive planning for locating goods locomotive sheds. Regarding Nagpur, the facility will be almost identical to Saharanpur except for staffing. At Nagpur, all operational staff will be provided by Indian Railways, while Alstom retains managerial control and spare management. Thus, the maintenance in Nagpur is performed by Indian railways staff under the supervision of Alstom staff. This pioneers a very innovative model as planned by Indian Railways.

03. So, with the depot coming in Saharanpur and Nagpur, there will be some job creation on the local level. As per our understanding, you also include women in the workforce. What is the future of jobs in Alstom for our people?

Establishing new facilities, such as the Saharanpur depot or the Nagpur depot, has resulted in significant job creation, directly and indirectly. The direct job creation numbers around 500 individuals, while the indirect job creation may be almost twice that of direct job creation. This has contributed to the area’s development as we predominantly employ local individuals and provide them with the necessary skills for the job. Additionally, these individuals are trained to take up any new assignments that may arise from other projects. Diversity has always been a top priority for us across all the functions. Traditionally, the rail sector has had low levels of diversity regarding women in the workforce. However, we have employed 15% of women in working-level positions in Saharanpur. Our objective is to take this even further and reach 25% shortly.

04. Out of curiosity, with our youngest population worldwide, more than our engineering colleges were needed to provide a workforce ready for use in the plant. Do you find any technical skill gap between what we have learned in college and what we use in the factories or any industry? How do you see it can be overcome?

In the present day, with engineering colleges producing a plethora of young graduates, it is essential to ponder over how they are being equipped with the necessary skills. Encouragingly, a notable shift occurs with students engaging in internships during their second, third, and fourth years, providing them with a firsthand understanding of industry dynamics. At Alstom, we’ve initiated several skill-building programs through our CSR initiatives. On completion of skill-building sessions, these individuals are recruited by various companies. Recently, a batch of about 30 people who underwent a skill-building programme in Madhepura has been recruited by a port company in Gujarat.

05. During our conversation, you mentioned that Indian Railways are floating tenders for the overall lifetime of the product. Previously, they used to buy the locomotives, use them, and do maintenance work. Now, they call the vendors to give the product, buy the locomotive, supply it, and maintain it further. So, Alstom is a giant in locomotives, be it RRTs, Indian Railways, DFC, or Metro projects. We cannot imagine the Metro project without Alstom in the past 20 years. These are the recent changes by the government. But the locomotives and metro coaches need to be refurbished or overhauled. Are you planning to be part of that service for overhauling?

To provide a summary of the current approach adopted by the metro authorities and Indian Railway, it can be observed that a bundled contract is being offered, which includes supply and services for either 15 or 35 years, depending on the contract terms. This trend has become quite common in India today. As a company, Alstom has become fully integrated into this scheme and has a large stake in the service sector. For example, we maintain a high-power locomotive in Saharanpur & Nagpur and RRTS Trains in Duhai Depot. We are eager to partner with the metro authorities and Indian Railways in such initiatives.

06. What sustainability measures have Alstom undertaken to mitigate carbon emissions? You posed an exceptionally crucial inquiry today.

At Alstom, sustainability holds primary importance, encompassing various dimensions. We prioritise sustainability throughout our product lifecycle, from manufacturing to the product’s service life. Our focus revolves around employing high-grade, lightweight & recyclable materials, implementing modern manufacturing techniques, and curbing carbon emissions in the production stage.

Another pivotal aspect lies in enhancing our product’s operational efficiency. This involves maintaining top-tier equipment functionality and optimising the product’s energy efficiency. Extensive research and development initiatives actively explore improvements across the entire value chain.

Sustainability remains a central focus driving our efforts and initiatives, underscoring our commitment to sustainable practices at every stage of our operations.

07. How does Alstom support local MSMEs and contribute to developing a supplier ecosystem in India?

Let’s take the example of the WAG 12 Locomotive Project. It is worth noting that nearly 30 primary suppliers are involved, most of which are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that have been established in India through the transfer of technology by Alstom. We have achieved 90% localisation on this project and have thus trained these MSMEs ourselves. We have provided them a long-term order, depending on the contract period and supply duration. Only a few components are being exported from abroad. Similarly, localisation efforts are increasing for metro/regional trains as well. Therefore, we are effectively establishing a supplier eco-system that will cater to the country’s needs as we move forward in the rail sector.

Patna Metro Unveils the 7 Bidders for Architectural Finishing & PEB Work 

PATNA (Metro Rail News): Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has unveiled seven bidders who have submitted bids for the package PC-01A of Patna Metro Phase 01. 

Scope of Work 

The scope of work for the package includes Architectural finishing work, including DFSE and roof Sheeting of Pre-engineered Building (PEB) structures and DC of External Facade, WS, SI, drainage, and Site development works at five stations: Malahi Pakri, Khemni Chak, Bhoothnath, Zero Mile and New ISBT Stations of Patna Metro. 

Bidding 

In August, DMRC issued bids for the project with an anticipated expenditure of 74.95 Crore. The Bidders are

  2. Godrej and Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd.
  3. Himcon Engineers India Pvt. Ltd.
  4. Metcon India Realty and Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd.
  5. Premco Rail Engineers Ltd.

Technical Evaluation 

All the submitted bids are currently being technically evaluated, and it may take a couple of months or so to complete. Once done, the name of the lowest bidder and the probable contractor for the package will be revealed.

The Bihar Cabinet had allotted the Patna Metro work to DMRC on a nomination basis. It was decided the work would be completed on a “Deposit Work Method” at an estimated cost of ₹ 482.87 crore.

3 Bidders Unveiled for the Track Work of Delhi Metro’s Sarita Vihar Depot   

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) unveiled the three bidders for the package DT-16 under Phase-IV of the Delhi Metro. 

Package DT-16 

The bids for Package DT-16 were invited in September. It aims to repurpose the Sarita Vihar Depot for stabling and maintaining thirteen six-coach Alstom trains of the under-construction 23.6 Km Silver Line connecting Tughlaqabad to Delhi Aerocity with 16 stations in between.

The Three Bidders 

The three bidders for the contract are : 

  1. SC Agarwal
  2. Pee Pee Mandal Projects 
  3. Texmaco Rail & Engineering 

The contract includes track-laying at Delhi Metro’s Sarita Vihar depot for augmenting additional maintenance facilities. It will be done at an estimated cost of Rs 9.44 Crore and within a deadline of 1.47 years. 

Scope Of Work 

The work relates to the following dynamics of the Ballastless/ballasted track to be laid on the Sarita Vihar depot: 

  1. Supply 
  2. Installation 
  3. Testing 
  4. Commissioning 

It will augment Sarita Vihar Depot’s maintenance facilities for the upcoming Silver Line

Further Developments: 

It can take roughly 2-3 months for the DMRC to complete the technical evaluation of the three bids and then come up with the lowest bidder and prospective contractor for the package DT-16.

The 23.622 km long Silver Line of the Delhi Metro is an under-construction line of Delhi Metro that falls under its Phase 04 tranche. This line comprises 15 stations (4 Elevated & 11 Underground) from Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity. It is expected to be completed by September 2025.

Delegation of Govt. of Japan & ADB Visit the Priority Stretch of RRTS Corridor

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): A delegation of senior officials from the Japanese government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) visited the recently inaugurated priority section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor on 17th November, 2023.

The delegation included Mr Daiho Fujii, Deputy Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, Japanese Ministry of Finance; Mr Shigeo Shimizu, Executive Director for Japan, Asian Development Bank; Ms Nanami Shigyo, Deputy Director of Multilateral Development Banks Division, International Bureau, Japanese Ministry of Finance; and Mr Takeo Konishi, Country Director for India, Asian Development Bank, among others. 

Shri Vinay Kumar Singh, managing director of NCRTC, accompanied the delegation on its visit, among other officials. 

Activities 

The activities performed during the visit include taking a ride in the Namo Bharat trains, contributing to the plantation drive & witnessing a demonstration of the self-defence training program being conducted by NCRTC.

The entire 82 Km stretch of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 31,632 Crore. The debt for the same is in a 60:40 equity ratio that the Asian Development has fully facilitated. Toral funds facilitated by ADB amount to  $ 1552 Million, which is approximately 45% of the total funds being used to build the project.

The Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) is a mass rapid transit network stretching 82.15 kilometres, connecting Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan with Ghaziabad and Meerut. The inaugural phase of the priority corridor, spanning 17 kilometres, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi. This segment includes five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guildhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot.

Our organisation is involved in various projects within India and projects operated from India for the global market. Q.5 With the Indian Railway undergoing a massive transformation in infrastructure, passenger experience, and rolling stock, how will EMKA be part of this journey?

We are pleased to inform you that we have established a robust online technology network in close collaboration with our technology and testing centres in Upatal, Germany. This partnership enables us to transfer the latest technological advancements from Europe to the Indian market in real time. As a result, we can keep pace with the rapid development of technology in Europe and bring it to India. We aim to catch up with high-speed new projects and ensure we provide our clients with the best possible service. As an Indian representative of an overseas company, we take pride in maintaining a formal and professional approach to our work.

Q.6 As an Indian representing an overseas company in India, what has been your journey so far with EMKA? What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?

There appears to be a certain degree of apprehension in the German mindset regarding the progress made in India. However, upon witnessing firsthand the pace of development in India, they are beginning to realise that it is indeed happening. Having spent 25 years in Germany, I deeply understand the German perspective. Additionally, I know how things operate because I was born and raised in India. That being said, India is currently experiencing a dynamic growth phase, with numerous projects tangibly coming to fruition. While no significant obstacles have been encountered thus far, our team at EMKA has been restructured and is now operating faster. The team is currently faced with the challenge of responding to customer needs and providing technical solutions. This journey with EMKA has spanned nearly two years for me, during which time we have worked to establish new team dynamics in India’s growth phase. Our growth potential is reflected in our growth rate, which has reached nearly 80% compared to the previous year. The team in Germany, as well as the parent company, now recognises the importance of the Indian market and provides support and encouragement to invest more in the Indian factory and subcontinent. Our sales team is present throughout India, allowing customers to reach out to us easily from any location, such as Ahmedabad or northern India.

SC pulls up Delhi Govt for not Providing its Share of Funds in RRTS

New Delhi (Metro Rail News): On Tuesday, the Supreme Court criticised the Delhi government for not providing funds for the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors. 

What did the apex court say? 

The apex court said budgetary provision was something the state government should look into, but if such national projects were to be affected. Money was spent on advertisements, and it would be inclined to direct those funds to this project. Additionally, if the dues were not paid within a week, the funds allocated by the AAP government for advertisements would be transferred to the project.

Gross Breach 

The court observed that the Delhi Government is in blatant non-compliance with the prior assurances that it had provided. The government of Delhi was directed in the month of April itself to pay its due RRTS for the timely implementation of the service, although it still needs to.  

A week Time 

The apex court has granted the government of Delhi a week to allocate the funds for the same, or the inclination of directing the ad budget of the government towards RRTS will come into effect. 

RRTS

The Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) is a mass rapid transit network stretching 82.15 kilometres, connecting Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan with Ghaziabad and Meerut. The construction of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor, with a total cost of Rs 30,000 crore, is underway. The inaugural phase of the priority corridor, spanning 17 kilometres, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi. This segment includes five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guildhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot.

On October 20th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched India’s inaugural RAPIDX train, Namo Bharat, departing from Sahibabad Station. These trains are designed to operate at a top speed of 180 kmph, with ticket prices ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 50 for standard coaches and Rs 50 to Rs 100 for premium coaches.

The RRTS project entails semi-high-speed rail corridors connecting Delhi to Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Alwar in Rajasthan, and Panipat in Haryana.

ABB & Titagarh Enter into Strategic Partnership for Metro Propulsion Systems 

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): On Monday, ABB, an electrification & automation giant, announced its strategic partnership with Titagarh Rail Systems to supply Propulsion Systems for Metro Rolling stock. 

Scope of Agreement 

It encompasses Titagarh’s purchase of ABB propulsion systems, including traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors & TCMS software. It entails securing manufacturing rights & production licenses for traction motors, along with the complete Transfer of Technology (ToT) from ABB to Titagarh. 

Market Expansion

This partnership will provide ABB with a business opportunity to expand its footprint in the emerging market of India in rolling stock and propulsion systems. 

Regarding advantages for Titagarh, it will provide Titagarh with a fantastic opportunity to accomplish and develop such high-end technologies in India for future projects and orders currently in its books. 

Aatmanirbhar Bharata 

This agreement will help Titagarh develop in-house capabilities to have its own TCMS along with TCMS laboratory and source codes, often referred to as the brain of the train. It also qualifies for the latest technology in the market to date. 

Current Status

The partnership has already been entrusted with Propulsion Equipment & TCMS orders for metro coaches in Gujarat.  

Titagarh Rail systems 

Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, previously known as Titagarh Wagons Limited, is a significant Indian company that makes trains and train components. They have won essential contracts from the Indian Railways to build and maintain Vande Bharat Trains. In addition to its involvement in the railway industry, Titagarh is also involved in shipbuilding, bridge construction, and defence.

ABB 

ABB is a Swedish-Swiss multinational corporation headquartered in Västerås, Sweden, and Zürich, Switzerland. ABB is a technology leader in electrification and automation, enabling a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. It is the most prominent company for designing, manufacturing and servicing propulsion systems and electrical equipment for rolling stock used for railways and metro systems.

DMRC Signs MoU with Bhubaneswar Metro for Phase 1 

BHUBANESHWAR (Metro Rail News): Delhi Metro Rail Corporation signed an MoU with the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation on 20th November for Bhubaneshwar Metro Phase 01. 

Memorandum of Understanding 

The MoU between DMRC & BMRC aims to assign DMRC as the turn-key consultant for the Bhubaneswar Metro Phase 01 at a Rs. 326.56 Crore fee. Its role here would be the same as in the Jaipur, Kochi, and Mumbai Metro. Its role would be limited to that of an implementer. The Project is to be completed within a four-year deadline. 

Signing 

The memorandum was signed between Siba Prasad Samantary, CEO of BMRC and Pramit Kumar Garg, Director of DMRC, in the virtual presence of Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik through Video conferencing. 5 T chairman V.K Pandian moderated the Program. 

“We are now poised to transform the transportation landscape in the state’s capital region. This is a flagship programme under the 5T (teamwork, technology, transparency, timely completion leading to transformation) initiative of the government that will also symbolise the emergence of a new Odisha,” Naveen Patnaik said.

Bhubaneshwar Metro Phase:01 

Bhubaneshwar Metro Phase: 01 runs from the Airport to Trishulia Square, approximately 26 Kilometers. It is being built at an expenditure of Rs 6 255 Crore, for which the state government approved the DPR on October 7, 2023. 

The 1st phase will have 20 stations made up of elevated viaducts. Bhubaneshwar Metro Rail Corporation, a fully-owned entity of the Odisha government, will bear the project’s entire cost. It will have stations as Biju Patnaik Airport, Capital Hospital, Sishu Bhawan, Bapuji Nagar, Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Ram Mandir Square, Vani Vihar, Acharya Vihar Square, Jaydev Vihar Square, Xavier Square, Rail Sadan, District Centre, Damana Square, Patia Square, KIIT Square, Nandan Vihar, Raghunathpur, Nandankanan Zoological Park, Phulapokhari and Trisulia.

The central Depot of the Metro Rail Project will be located near Trisulia Square, where the command and Control centre and the stabilising facilities for the metro trains will be constructed. 

Connectivity Boost 

The project will significantly boost connectivity in Bhubaneswar by connecting central locations. As per the future extension plans, the metro will connect Puri with the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneshwar. 

It was announced by the Chief Minister of Odisha on April 1, the statehood day of Odisha, while it will be inaugurated by the CM himself on 1st January 2024.

The Humane Side of London’s Metro that the World Must Witness

Introduction 

London’s metro rail is lovingly called London Tube or the London Underground. With 250 miles of track and 270 stations, it sprawls in every direction with around six million daily travellers. It is indeed the beating heart of London. Globally recognised, locally loved. Transport for London (TfL)  is the authority responsible for enabling this seamless travel to become a reality. It looks after the integrated management of London’s transport, including its tube, buses, taxis, cable cars and boats. London isn’t London without TfL. They have served and shaped the city for decades. There are probably 100s of lessons we can draw from their 160 years of functioning, but this article specifically focuses on bringing the humane side of the London Tube system. Some small or big initiatives have given life and belonging to the otherwise mundane transit systems, intertwining them with art, culture and tradition. From the buskers performing a wide array of music to the many thousands of pieces of art which grace the station walls every day, we have the pleasure of essentially walking through an immersive cultural gallery every single day.

Poems on the Underground

‘Poems on the Underground’ celebrated Its 37th anniversary in 2023. Poems featured in Tube carriages have been a big hit with the public. Poems on the Underground was launched in 1986, following an idea from the American writer Judith Chernaik to bring poetry to a broader audience and the delight of bemused commuters. These poems pay tribute to the magnificent tradition of English poetry and those who have contributed to its richness and diversity. Old and new, familiar and unfamiliar poems explore diverse topics such as love, London, exile, family, dreams, war, music and nature and feature hundreds of poets. Arts Council England, the British Council, The Poetry Society and TfL proudly support it. What an unconventional partnership! The poems became so popular that they were published as a book, and some were hosted on a website

Complimentary Morning Newspaper and Weekly Magazines

The free morning newspaper has become part of the fabric of city life and something that Londoners say improves their daily Tube and bus journeys. But the first question is, what is the business model behind the free newspaper for everyone? The newspaper distribution contract with London Underground Ltd. began in 1999. It went through the process of public tendering. Today, newspaper agencies fiercely compete with each other to get this partnership. It is said that there has been a sharp revenue rise from advertisements to these newspaper agencies that got these tenders. Hence, newspaper agencies are willing to give the newspaper for free. The profit has been more than the cost of the newspaper. These new paper agencies also pay a fee to TfL. Revenue from such Tube and bus distribution deals is used to fund transport improvements, carbon emissions-cutting projects, and to boost paper recycling. It’s a win-win!

Busking

I recently realised that there has been a stark change in my taste in music. Thanks to TfL and the artist at the tube station near my office that keeps playing classic jazz. It’s been 20 years since TfL launched its first busking scheme, where it designated around 40 pitches across 30 central London stations, where music artists get fantastic opportunities to show off their talents. Passer-by would often donate money as a token of appreciation, supporting the livelihood of the artists. London is world renowned for music, with many venues to visit and performers to appreciate. Busking has a vital role in the music ecosystem and provides artists with a free, public stage to hone their skills, whether on the street, at one of Busks in London’s high-profile locations or on the Underground. These buskers join a long-living tradition that has been part of the careers of international stars such as Ed Sheeran, Bob Geldof, and Jessie J.

Art on the Underground: Art Everyday for Everyone

In 1917, Frank Pick said, “Where there is life, there is art”. He was not an artist but the Managing Director of the London Underground. Art has now run in the veins of the underground system for ages. Tottenham Court Station is a prevalent example of that note. It has mosaic works done in 1986 by Eduardo Paolozzi (1924 – 2005), and Daniel Buren was commissioned for his works in 2016. This station is now one of London’s most remarkable spaces for public art. The ‘Art on the Underground’ initiative invites artists to create projects for London’s Underground that are experienced by millions of people each day, changing the way people experience their city. Incorporating installation, sculpture, digital and performance, prints, and custom tube map covers, the programme produces critically acclaimed projects that are accessible to all and draw together the city’s diverse communities.

Book Swaps for London

I have encountered many book swap pop-ups on the London Tube, at Stratford, and at Tooting Broadway, to name a few. Some are purely community-led initiatives, and some partner with social charities and TfL. Delving into the history, ‘Book Swap for London’ dates back to 2012, which started with an ambitious aim of a London-wide book-sharing scheme. It’s an exciting yet simple idea. Shelves are set up in the Tube & overground stations, and commuters can use them to pick up books they would like to read and drop off books they want to give away.

The ‘Quote of the Day’ made my day.

I am cheered up by this whiteboard every Monday morning on my way to work. Someone wrote a book called ‘TfL Quote of the Day’ compiling these words of wisdom from 100s of boards at the underground stations that bring London together through the power of words.

Shaping the Future of Welding and Sustainable Solutions: A Conversation with Mr. V.V. Kamath, Managing Director of Fronius India Private Limited

Metro Rail News team Interviewed Mr V.V. Kamath during IREE 2023. He is the  Managing Director of Fronius India Private Limited. This interview explores the latest innovations and technologies ushered by Fronius India Private Limited in the Indian mobility sector, emphasising Railways. This interview also unravels the company’s commitment towards sustainability and an environmentally friendly approach to business. 

Mr. V.V. Kamath is the Managing Director of Fronius India Private Limited. With over 30 years in the welding industry and a background in mechanical engineering, he has led Fronius India since 2013. Beyond welding, his purview extends to solar energy and battery charging across SAR countries. Here are the edited excerpts:

IREE Interview Fronius MD

Question: 01 Fronius’s motto is ‘changing the world for the better.’ How would you define this mission, and what major efforts is the company undertaking to fulfil it? Additionally, what does sustainability mean for Fronius?

Fronius firmly believes that sustainability is an action rather than a word. Our commitment to sustainability stems from our desire to leave a better Earth for future generations, including the unborn child. Our founder, Mr Gunter Pronius, believed that every product we make must endure its full life cycle and be easily repairable. At Fronius, we adhere to the three R principles: repair, reuse, and recycle. This is the foundation of our business model. We take great care to ensure that our products have the lowest possible CO2 emissions from the purchasing phase to the end of their life cycle. Our first battery charger was created using scrap materials, and the discarded battery charger was later transformed into a functional device. 

Our welding machines, used since 1950 in Austria, are utilised globally. Some machines are still operational after 40 years of usage and remain recyclable. We take great care to safeguard the health of our planet by using the lowest amount of resources possible and returning them. Our welding business is centred on joining metal, while our solar energy business is focused on returning energy to the grid. We acquire energy from the grid in the former, but in the latter, we return energy to the grid. For us, this is the essence of sustainability.

Question: 02 How does Fronius ensure an efficient energy supply for various industries? Are there tailored solutions to optimise operating costs, especially for organisations in the railroad industry?

When considering passenger or freight transport, it is imperative to remember that the vehicle’s longevity is of utmost importance. Minimal repairs are necessary to ensure its longevity. This can only be achieved if the manufacturing process is handled carefully. Proper welding joints are key to ensuring durability and reducing the need for repairs. This is where Fronius comes in. With over 73 years of experience in the welding business, Fronius is committed to providing perfect welding joints through their welding machines. Fronius has 36 subsidiaries worldwide, offering experience in welding across various atmospheres and continents. They focus on transferring welding skills from the welder’s hand to the machine, ensuring a sound output. Furthermore, Fronius machines have been designed to consume the lowest power in the world, resulting in less grid energy consumption and a sound welding joint. Question: 03 Give us an overview of Fronius’ customised welding solutions. What are the major developments in robotic and automation systems in welding, and could you elaborate on TPS/i WireSense?

The history of robotic welding dates back several decades, during which the robot was considered the primary system, while the welding power source was relegated to a secondary position. However, this dynamic has shifted with technological advancements, and today, both the robot and welding power source are considered equally important. The welding power source has significantly developed, improving welding equipment technology. Robots would not be able to accomplish much without a welding power source. Modern welding machines are designed to achieve sound joints, with the robot as an arm to hold the equipment.

Regarding the TPSI wire sense program, this is a unique feature developed exclusively by Pronus for robotic welding. This program ensures that the welding path is maintained, even if there is a deviation from the sightline welding program. Our company offers customised welding solutions for various applications, including railroad, oil and gas, thermal power plants, etc. We have developed a specialised welding solution for bogey frames involving a complex welding path and restricted joint areas. Our solution ensures that the entire bogey frame is welded to meet the required quality standards. At our IREE stall, we showcase our welding solution for the specialised steel Indian railway, which is looking to modernise its rolling stock by incorporating aluminium racks.

Our company has already begun executing plans to expand our market reach by creating aluminium coaches, specifically the Pune Metro, which has been operating for the past eight months. The fabrication for these coaches was done by Titagarh Wagon using only our welding system, and the results have been world-class. Our next step is to move forward with the Vande Bharat passenger coaches, and we are currently in discussions with the contractors who have won the bid. We are dedicated to bringing customised, world-class welding solutions to our country to produce more Vande Bharat coaches in less time. As someone who has recently visited various facilities globally, our team is committed to action and producing results.

Question: 04 How is welding data management revolutionising the production environment? What software solutions does Fronius offer for data management?

Data management is integral to every aspect of our lives today, from communication to manufacturing. To this end, we present to you our solution, WeldCube, which offers various levels of data management systems depending on the needs of our customers. We offer WeldCube Basic and WeldCube Premium, and our data management solution can also be rented out to customers. This allows them to understand the required data, and if they are satisfied, they can continue with the solution. If not, they can short-close the contract. 

We capture the essence of the arc, including voltage current, wire feed speed, gas consumption, energy consumption, and barcode scanning. If a product fails in the field, you can retrieve data on who welded it, what day it was welded, and what current and amperage were used. If corrective action is needed, it can be taken. Our complete end-to-end data management solution ensures you have all the tools to manage your data easily.

Question: 05 With over 25 years of experience in the rolling stock manufacturing industry, how is Fronius supporting the rail and metro industry with its welding systems and technologies?

It is important to note that we are in a business partnership where both parties benefit. The strength of our business is comparable to our strong welding joints. At Fronius India, we support Indian Railways in underframe manufacturing, bogey frame manufacturing, and coach manufacturing. We provided a welding solution during the manufacturing of Train 18, now named Vande Bharat, which faced numerous welding challenges. In the manufacturing of the Metro, passenger safety is of utmost importance, and we ensure that we provide quality welding joints that can last longer. 

In addition to our welding mission, we have a team of 150 people in India and 14 offices spread across the country. We have over eleven robotic welding stations exclusively dedicated to our customers for their welding trials and over 40 manual welding stations for our customers’ training and conducting trials. We also aim to develop underprivileged families’ society kids to become employable welders and secure a place in the industry. Our program has successfully placed 70 kids in the industry in and around Pune, and we plan to take this program across the country to ensure that we have quality welders who can guarantee good-quality rolling stock in the future.
