CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): The ₹621-crore Anna Salai flyover project in Chennai has undergone a design change due to its planned alignment not matching the existing Chennai Metro station structures at Nandanam and Teynampet.
The change affects around 426 metres of the flyover, slowing work at the two locations. The revised design has received government approval. There will be no additional project cost, and the overall completion is now expected by February 2027.
Construction of the four-lane flyover on Anna Salai began in January 2024. The alignment problem came to light only when the work reached the points near the Metro stations.
Under the original plan, the flyover was to rest on three columns, with one column placed in the centre of the road. The revised design has reduced this to two columns one on each side. This change helps save space on the carriageway and avoids conflict with the existing Metro structures.
Project authorities clarified that construction will not stop completely because of the design change. Work will only slow down along the 426-metre stretch near the two stations. So far, 62% of the total project has been completed. IIT Madras is currently conducting a third-party audit of the project.
