MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday, 20 August 2026, approved a proposal to build an underground pedestrian link connecting the Nehru Science Centre Metro station on Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) to the Worli Promenade.

The 1.3km underground passage will run beneath the Mahalaxmi Racecourse area and Lala Lajpatrai Road. It will give Metro passengers a safe, direct and all-weather walking route to the Worli waterfront and the planned landscaped garden. Commuters will no longer need to walk along busy roads or cross heavy traffic corridors.

The underground links will feature escalators, lifts, lighting, ventilation, fire-safety systems, CCTV cameras, multiple entry and exit points, and facilities for universal accessibility. These features are designed to keep the route comfortable in Mumbai’s heat and monsoon while keeping pedestrians completely separate from surface traffic.

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) will execute the project, while the BMC will bear the entire cost of around ₹702.4 crore. The BMC had earlier made around ₹2,500 crore available for the Metro Line 3 project. The proposal was cleared by a majority vote at the BMC Standing Committee meeting, clearing the way for construction to begin.

BMC is not supposed to release the entire amount at once ,The first 25% is linked to the MoU advance, while the next 15% linked to Design, approvals & major contracts ,and later 20% will release after physical progress of 25%,50%and 75%.

Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde said ‘‘The Coastal Road and the proposed landscaped garden at Worli are expected to become major tourist attractions. However, access to the area by public transport and on foot remains inadequate. The underground passage will fill this gap by offering a safe and convenient route for people arriving by Metro’’Hindusthan Times reported.

The project aims to improve last-mile connectivity and make the Worli waterfront easier and safer to reach for daily commuters and visitors.
