Guess how many people travel by Metro Rail in Bangalore?
The huge 1.5 lakh people! This is the average daily number of passengers being served by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) following the recent completion of the purple line, 18.2 km East-West Corridor that connects Baiyappanahalli Mysuru Road in the city .
Judging by the statistics provided by Bangalore by the Minister K J George in the Legislature on Tuesday metro rail passengers has tripled in the past two months. Before extending the metro trains to Mysuru Road, the average daily passenger hovered around 55,000 passengers.
The increase in passenger numbers has also led to complaints about trains to be packed, especially during holidays and weekends. Mahalakshmi Layout MLA K Gopalaiah noted that women had trouble finding a seat on trains and sought to know if BMRCL plans to ask the chairs for women in the trainers or coaches exclusively reserved for existing passenger women. In response, George said: “Each train has three coaches, and each coach has a capacity of 250 passengers has 43 seats in each coach though the journey time is short in the Metro trains we keep appealing to commuters to give seats for women.
On coaches for women, George said: “We have plan  to increase the number of coaches in each train from three to six in the near future. We will examine the proposal to reserve a coach only for women and take action.”
