GURUGRAM (Metro Rail News): The design of the proposed double-decker flyover and underpass at Bakhtawar Chowk in Gurugram needs further changes, as Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has sought amendments to the revised design submitted by Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL).
GMDA officials said the authority wants to utilise the available space at the junction more efficiently. This will ensure sufficient room for the proposed six-lane underpass and smooth traffic movement between Sector 47 and Medanta Medicity.
About Gurugram’s Double-Decker Project
The proposed project will combine road and metro infrastructure, with provision for a future underpass.
First level- The first level will have an elevated road with three lanes on both sides.

Second level- The second level will accommodate a metro viaduct and a station at Bakhtawar Chowk.
Ground level- Two service lanes on each side will facilitate traffic movement.
Future plans- The design will also need to accommodate a proposed six-lane underpass connecting Sector 47 with the road leading to Medanta hospital.
Need for a revised design
The main challenge is the limited space available at the junction. GMDA wants the supporting piers and other structures to be positioned in a way that leaves sufficient room for the six-lane underpass. However, GMRL has pointed out that although the junction itself has enough space for six lanes, the connecting roads on either side are not wide enough to accommodate them. GMRL revised the design following GMDA’s directions, but the limited width of the road connecting Sector 47 to Medanta Medicity remains a challenge.
Following the GMDA CEO’s directions, GMRL submitted an updated design on October 1, incorporating provisions for the underpass. The agency also informed GMDA that it had made the necessary changes and submitted the revised drawings for approval. The revised plan focuses on Medicity-Satpaul Mittal Marg, which has a right of way of 50 metres. It proposes a central pier for the double-decker structure while making provision for the six-lane underpass.
Impacts after revised design
Possible delay in finalising the design: Further modifications and the pending approval process could extend the time needed to finalise the design.
Traffic management: The underpass is planned to support traffic movement between Sector 47 and Medanta Medicity, particularly as commercial developments come up in Sector 47 and nearby areas.
Coordination between road and metro infrastructure: The authorities need to ensure that the placement of the flyover and metro structure leaves sufficient space for the proposed underpass.
GMRL will need to make further adjustments in consultation with GMDA before the authority approves the design.
