JAIPUR (Metro Rail News): After multiple revisions and delays, the Jaipur Metro Phase 2 finally received approval from the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Phase 2 will facilitate connectivity between the northern and southern parts of Jaipur. The corridor will cover a total length of about 41 km from Prahladpura to Todi Mod via 36 stations.
The Union Cabinet approved the project at a cost of ₹13,037.66 crore. The Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited will be responsible for implementing the project. Funding will flow through a mix of equity contributions from both governments, subordinate debt, and multilateral financing in line with the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.
Connecting the City’s Key Nodes
Unlike Phase-1, which runs along the East-West axis from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar and covers 11.64 km across 11 stations, the new corridor will cut across the city along its North-South spine. It will link major destinations including Sitapura Industrial Area, Jaipur International Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital, VKIA, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar. In addition to this, the new corridor will have an interchange with the existing Phase 1.
Ridership Expected to Surge
Jaipur Metro’s current Phase-1 corridor draws around 60,000 passengers daily a modest but steady figure for a relatively short stretch. The addition of a 41-km corridor through some of the city’s busiest corridors is expected to drive a sharp jump in daily ridership, nudging more commuters away from private vehicles and towards public transport.
The project carries an Economic Internal Rate of Return exceeding the 14% threshold, it signals strong long-term socio-economic value beyond just commuter convenience.
Clearances and Timelines
Phase-2 has cleared multiple layers of institutional scrutiny, Inter-Ministerial Consultation, Network Planning Group review, and Public Investment Board evaluation before receiving Cabinet approval. It also aligns with the Rajasthan TOD Policy-2025 and broader national objectives around sustainable urban transport.
Construction is targeted for completion by September 2031. Once operational, the corridor is expected to ease traffic pressure across Jaipur’s congested arteries, bring down vehicular emissions, and improve daily commutes for residents, workers, and tourists, positioning the Pink City more firmly as a modern, mobility-ready urban centre.
