THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (Metro Rail News): The much-anticipated conventional metro rail project in Kerala’s capital is estimated to cost Rs 11,560.8 crore. According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the metro will feature two key corridors, enhancing Thiruvananthapuram’s urban transit landscape.
Financial Breakdown and Corridor Details
The project cost is split across two major corridors:
- Corridor I: Extending from Technocity at Pallipuram to Pallichal, this stretch will cost Rs 7,503.18 crore.
- Corridor II: From Kazhakkoottam to Killipalam, this corridor will be built at Rs 4,057.7 crore.
Corridor I will cover 30.8 km and include 25 stations, all of which will be elevated. The second corridor, measuring 15.9 km, will have 13 stations, with 11 elevated and two underground stations located at East Fort and Killipalam Junction.
Government Review and Approval Process
On April 15, a high-level meeting led by former Chief Secretary K M Abraham reviewed the project details. The executive summary of the DPR, submitted by the project’s implementing agency, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), in February, is currently under consideration by the state government and is likely to receive approval soon.
The final DPR is expected to be submitted to KMRL by the DMRC once the model code of conduct is lifted, with a target date set for June.
Infrastructure and Development in Thiruvananthapuram
The metro construction will begin with the flyovers at Sreekaryam and Pattom. This is part of a broader effort to manage the city’s traffic, which is anticipated to increase due to significant developments like the Vizhinjam Port and the growth of the IT sector.
The project budget includes allocations for civil, electrical, signalling, and telecommunication works, rolling stock, environmental protection, and rehabilitation initiatives.
The state government has prioritised this project to tackle future traffic congestion and enhance Thiruvananthapuram’s urban mobility. This metro rail project is a crucial component of the city’s comprehensive mobility plan, which aims to accommodate the projected peak hour traffic of 19,747 by 2051.
