The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is India’s first bullet train project and the flagship of the National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL). Spanning 508 km between Maharashtra and Gujarat with 12 stations, it is designed for a top speed of 350 km/h, a step change from anything on the Indian network, and would connect Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex to Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati in roughly two hours.

The project is the only HSR corridor in India under active construction, built with Japanese Shinkansen technology and financed overwhelmingly by a concessional JICA loan. Viaduct, station and track work is advancing across Gujarat and into Maharashtra, with depots at Sabarmati, Surat and Thane.

Why it matters

Everything about India’s high-speed rail future rests on this corridor. Its cost structure, a Rs 1.1 lakh crore project underwritten largely by an 0.1%-interest Japanese loan, and its delivery timeline are the reference case every subsequent HSR proposal is measured against. Whether it opens on a realistic schedule and at what ridership will decide if the eleven other planned corridors ever move beyond DPRs.
