Kochi Metro|Land-swap deal for Metro Rail finalised

Kochi: The land-swap deal between the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and the management of St Albert’s College was finalised on Wednesday. The deal was finalised at a high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Thiruvananthapuram.

A total of 88 cents of land was surrendered by St Albert’s to the KMRL from its 4.84-acre land at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium at Kaloor, for which the college authorities owe lease rent arrears to the Government.

As per the decision, the GCDA will give 74 cents to St Albert’s, along with 14 cents of ‘purambokke’ land. In exchange, the GCDA will be given 60 cents of government-owned land near the Kerala High Court.

“At the meeting, it was also  decided to refer the land swap proposal at the next Cabinet meeting for approval. Since the college authorities have to clear dues of some of the buildings on the leased land, the deal should be cleared by the Cabinet. Once the Cabinet okays the deal, the land will be handed over.

The District Collector has been asked to hand over the possession certificate to us, before that,” said GCDA chairman N Venugopal, who attended the meeting. The College owes a total of Rs 1.75 crore as lease arrears to the State Government.

Meanwhile, a consensus has been reached between the authorities, and the arrears amount was finalised at Rs 45 lakh. A final decision in this regard will be taken at the next Cabinet meeting.

The meeting was also attended by Excise Minister K  Babu, Minister for Power Aryadan Mohammed, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash, the Revenue Principal Secretary, District Collector M G Rajamanickam and the KMRL general manager, among others.

Bangalore: Entertainment firm Innovative Studios and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation on Monday signed a deal to set up an entertainment complex at the metro station on Mysuru Road. This was part of the 30 MoUs the Karnataka Tourism department inked with investors on the second day of the 38th PATA travel mart, here.

Innovative Studios, which operates Innovative Film City on Mysuru Road, will spend about Rs 15 crore on this entertainment complex.

“We have taken the first step to put Karnataka on the tourism map of the world. We will soon convert all of them into reality,” Industries and Tourism minister RV Deshpande told ET.

Bangalore Metro has a large space at its Mysuru Road station (which will be thrown open to traffic soon), and the Metro was keen to give away the space for commercial activity. The entertainment centre will offer gaming and other recreation.

The other tourism projects are set to come up in different districts such as Kodagu, Shivamogga, Vijayapura etc. If all the projects signed were to see light of the day, they will bring investments worth about Rs 1,800 crore.

“We had more than 1,100 delegates from 61 countries and we had representation from almost all the states. Buyers and sellers (of tourism services) are very happy. The event has been a grand success,” Deshpande said. According to additional chief secretary (Tourism) PS Kharola, the Tourism department had done some studies across the state and identified 30 projects with great tourism potential, and these projects had been offered to investors at the event.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who opened the event on Sunday, said Karnataka has seen phenomenal growth in tourist arrivals, which, he said, has grown more than thrice from a mere 24 million a decade ago to 85 million now. The State has two world heritage sites at Hampi and Pattadakal and has the largest number of tourist destinations including heritage, pilgrimage, adventure etc. “We have identified 319 such destinations,” the CM had said.

Delhi Metro|SunEdison installs 8 solar systems for DMRC Badarpur-Faridabad line

Global renewable energy firm SunEdison on Sunday said it has installed eight solar systems for Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) along the Badarpur- Faridabad line.

The Badarpur-Faridabad metro line, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, “is the first metro line in the DMRC network to integrate solar into the design of the buildings”, SunEdison said to media.

The systems are built on the roofs of the stations and depot and are expected to generate 1.9 megawatts (MW) of clean, reliable, and cost effective solar power.

“Millions of people rely on the Delhi Metro each day and by installing SunEdison’s solar system in eight of the metro lines, we are excited that these commuters will be able to benefit from a clean and reliable source of electricity,” said Pashupathy Gopalan, SunEdison’s president of Asia-Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa.

“These systems took only two months to build and will generate electricity for the metro line for 25 to 30 years with little maintenance cost,” Gopalan added.

The solar systems are expected to generate 2.

5 gigawatt- hours of electricity a year, and avoid the emission of 1,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, the equivalent of taking 363 cars off the road or preventing more than 800 metric tons of coal from being burned.

SunEdison is building similar solar power plants generating 1.7 MW at the Yamuna Bank station and Yamuna Bank yard.
