Delhi Metro|Geeta takes a ride in metro train and visits Metro Museum

New Delhi: Geeta, the Indian girl who strayed into Pakistan more than a decade ago and who returned to India from Pakistan yesterday took a ride in the Delhi Metro today and also visited the Delhi Metro Museum at Patel Chowk Metro station.

She travelled on the Delhi Metro train from Civil Lines Metro station to Patel Chowk Metro station at 11 AM today. At Patel Chowk Metro station, she visited the Metro Museum and was briefed about the Metro Museum with the help of an interpreter.

During her one hour stay in the Metro, she was accompanied by the members of the Edhi family, who took care of Geeta for over a decade while she was in Pakistan and officials from the Indian High Commission and Delhi Government were also present.

Nagpur Metro|German Bank KfW Reviews Progress of Nagpur Metro Rail

Nagpur: A team of German Bank KfW, which has in-principle agreed to sanction a loan of Rs 3,700 crore for Nagpur Metro Rail, has reviewed the progress of the project.

The team, which is on a five-day visit of the orange city, held discussion on Wednesday with officials of Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (NMRCL), which is executing the rapid mass transport project.

NMRCL Managing Director Brijesh Dixit also took part in the discussion, which was aimed at finalising the process for funding the project, a release from the company said.   Representatives from KfW Bank and NMRCL visited the proposed sites of metro rail alignment at Congress Nagar, Santra Market and Gol Bazaar Market.

KfW appreciated the inclusive approach by NMRCL towards the Project Affected People (PAP) as well as different stake-holders, the release said.   Of the total land required for the venture, 77 per cent has already been acquired. Construction on one of the corridor has also started.   KfW has agreed to sanction a loan of Rs 3,700 crore which is to be repaid by NMRCL over a period of 20 years.

Chennai Metro| CMRL to appoint Design Consultant for Central Square

Chennai: The Chennai Metro Rail will soon appoint a design consultant specially for developing the largest underground station in Chennai, the Central Square.

The Chennai Central Metro Rail station, which has now been named Central Square, sprawls over 70,000 sq. m and goes as deep as 25 metres.

According to Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL), this station, built at a cost of Rs.400 crore, will have an exclusive consultant for civil, architectural and landscaping works.

Besides these, the consultant will have to supervise the construction work and design development.

They have called for tenders for the appointment of a consultant and this process will be completed soon.

In an attempt to make this station a hub, CMRL has planned to link it to various other modes of transport, including MRTS, buses (intercity and inter-State) and suburban railway lines.

Fears of heritage lovers allayed as authorities tell them the building will retain its original maroon colour

If you had passed by the Chennai Central railway station recently, you would have noticed that it was wearing a bit of white. The ‘white’ lead to consternation among heritage watchers, who heaved a sigh of relief when they realised that the colour of this heritage building is not being changed. It is just white primer paint that will prepare the building to painted its original maroon colour.

The facelift, being carried out after five years, is undertaken by the Buildings division of the Southern Railway.

A 20-member team led by the Southern Railway’s divisional engineer (Buildings), Mr. Ramamurthy, will monitor the entire work.

The Chennai Circle of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) provides technical assistance to Southern Railway in the conservation of the building.

There is no change of colour. As the earlier colour faded, we started to give a fresh coat of paint to make the building look bright,” said a senior railway official.

The painting work will cover around 9,000 sq.m of space of the main building of the railway station.

However, the work will be carried out in segments to ensure the original character and style of the building is maintained.

“Such regular maintenance of heritage buildings is needed. As the building belongs to the Southern Railway, we provide only technical support whenever we are requested by the railways,” said an ASI official.

Designed by British architect George Harding and later by Robert Fellowes Chisholm, the Central railway station buildings have some unique Romanesque architectural features, including Travancore ‘caps’ on the main towers, a central clock tower, semi-circular arches, thick walls and large towers.

Most of the churches in England and Portugal in medieval Europe have this style of architecture.

Interestingly, the place where the Central railway station is located now was earlier a garden owned by a Portuguese merchant, John Pereira, before it was taken over by the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway in 1870.

Light Metro | Kerala CM meets Venkaiah Naidu over Light Metro projects

New Delhi: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy held discussions with Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu here on Friday for getting the Central Government’s approval for the proposed Light Metro projects in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram.

At the meeting, Chandy stressed the need for implementing the Light Metro projects in Kochi and Kozhikode urgently, and discussed extension of the Kochi Metro Rail. The Chief Minister, who was accompanied by State Public Works Department Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju and Kochi Metro Rail Project principal advisor E Sreedharan, talked to the Union Minister for more than 40 minutes.

Welcoming the proposal for the Light Metro projects, he said the Ministry would initiate the necessary actions once Kerala submits the report. “If Kerala submits a detailed report on the Light Metro projects, we would take action on it without any delay,” Naidu said after the meeting. Oommen Chandy, meanwhile, assured Naidu that a new report would be submitted within one week.

Venkaiah Naidu has said that the Centre welcomes the Light Metro projects in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, and will take the necessary action once Kerala submits the report. “If Kerala submits a detailed report on the Light Metro project, an immediate action will be taken,” Naidu said after a meeting with Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy over the Light Metro project.

The Kerala Government had written to the Centre regarding the Light Metro projects on September 11, stating that the twin projects would be taken up on the lines of the Kochi Metro project. The State and the Centre are supposed to bear 20 per cent of the cost each, while the remaining 60 per cent will be raised through borrowings.

Chandigarh Metro | DMRC’s submits revised report on Chandigarh Metro Rail Project

Chandigarh: The Metro project for Chandigarh and its peripheral areas will now cost Rs 13,600 crore. In a revised detailed project report (DPR) submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to the Chandigarh Administration, the cost of the project has been pegged at Rs 2,700 crore more than the earlier estimated cost of Rs 10,900 crore.

The revised DPR for the Metro project, one of the important components in the integrated multi-nodal mass transport system, has been prepared after the Union Ministry of Urban Development had sought a revised report since the parameters of the last study conducted in 2012 had changed.In the fresh report, it has been mentioned that the rate of return in terms of investment will be 1.5 per cent of the cost, which works out to Rs 200 crore per annum.

The report states that the rate of return in terms of saving as a result of less load on roads and less fuel consumption on private vehicles will come to 14.25 per cent of the cost.Based on the revised DPR, the Chandigarh Administration has already initiated the process to get approval from the Union Cabinet.

Bangalore Metro | Bangalore’s East-West Metro connectivity could be a New Year’s gift

Bangalore: Whizzing past the traffic from the east part of the city to the west on Namma Metro could be the city’s gift for the New Year. The east-west corridor of metro (purple line) is expected to be a reality by this year-end.

The underground station at Minsk Square is all but ready, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) officials said after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s inspection of the station on Saturday.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said work only on the false ceiling was left, and the works in their entirety would be completed within a month. “There will be five entrances to the station. The roads around the station will have to be repaired to make them motorable,” he said, after being taken through the station that has also got power connection now.

After inspecting the metro rail work at Sarakki and Banashankari later, he said the footpaths and service roads around the stations had to be improved, while plants could be grown on the median.

BMRCL Managing Director Pradeep Singh Kharola said the most difficult task would be to deal with the Chikpet area for the north-south line. “There are very old houses on that stretch, some of them made of mud,” he said.

Kochi Metro | Alstom offers Driverless Trains to Kochi Metro

Kochi: With the first lot of Kochi Metro coaches expected to arrive by mid-December, Alstom has offered two crucial value additions that together cost Rs.55 crore.

A pioneering initiative to regenerate 99 per cent of braking energy of each train would increase the project cost by Rs.15 crore, from Rs.633 crore to Rs.648 crore. The proposal has been submitted to the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).

Another first

Another first-time-in-India initiative is Unmanned Train Operation (UTO) that could escalate procurement cost of 75 coaches by another Rs.40 crore to Rs.688 crore. A proposal on this is expected to be submitted to the KMRL shortly.

“The total increase of Rs.55 crore is marginal since its pay-back (break even) period will be less than four years. We are awaiting response from the KMRL since the first few coaches must be delivered in two months,” said Bharat Salhotra, MD (Transport – India and South Asia) of Alstom. The firm is trying to hard-sell its regenerative braking technology branded Hesop to the KMRL.

“Using this, 99 per cent of braking energy of each train can be fed back into grid or can be used by the train that follows. This will result in phenomenal savings to the KMRL, while ushering in a revolutionary green technology in Kerala,” said Mr. Salhotra.

Safer journey ensured

The manned trains can be transformed into unmanned ones by making slight structural and engineering alterations. This will ensure safer journey since the remote probability of human error can be ruled out.

The UTO technology will also ensure more comfortable journey since trains will operate as per standardised norms – no sudden acceleration and braking by unskilled drivers, while enabling structured time gap between trains. All these contribute to lessening wear and tear of trains, thus lessening life-cycle cost, sources associated with the metro coaches said.

The AAP government has also decided to provide bus services at a frequency of 2-5 minutes on the city’s 10 road stretches to be redesigned soon.

“I have asked DMRC to increase train frequency. Metro has informed the government that in the past one month, DMRC has inducted 125 new trains in its fleet, but it is not sufficient.

“I recently sent some of my volunteers to check the status of frequency of metro trains and I got to know that at 6 AM, there is a frequency of 7 to 15 minutes between two trains,” Kejriwal said here.

He said several persons told him that they have stopped traveling by Metro because of the heavy rush.

DMRC chief Mangu Singh has told the government when less than seven people occupy one sq m in the metro, they decrease the frequency, the Chief Minister said.

“I have asked him to run trains at peak frequency for three months. If there is no crowd even at 6 AM, DMRC should also run trains in peak frequency and Delhi government will pay for any loss the metro suffers,” he said.

PWD Minister Satyendar Jain said that government has decided to provide high-frequency bus services on 10 roads to be redesigned by the department.

The 10 roads to be redesigned are from Janakpuri to Sarai Kale Khan, Wazirabad to Sarai Kale Khan, Mukarba chowk to Singhu Border, Wazirabad to Apsara Border, Nizamuddin Crossing (Ring Road 2) to UP Border, Wazirpur DTC Depot to Rithala Metro Station, Britannia Road to Outer Ring Road (West Enclave), Shiv Das Puri Marg (Ring Road) to Patel Nagar, Mangolpuri to Kanjhawala, Nawala Cross Road (Road number 41) to Road Number 41 A (Patparganj).

“Government has planned to provide high-frequency bus services on these 10 redesigned roads. People will be able to get buses on these stretches at every 2-5 minutes. Government will also create a dedicated bus lane on this stretch,” Jain said.

He also said that in order to provide last mile connectivity, government will provide feeder bus services and CCTVs will also be installed on these 10 roads.

Nagpur: The ambitious Nagpur Metro Rail project on Tuesday virtually received an assurance of extension of Rs 3800 crore loan from a German Bank. A team of the German Bank KFW was in Nagpur since the past three days to study Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) project in detail. The German team scanned and studied the Metro Rail project report on Tuesday.

According to senior officials of the Metro Rail project, the German Bank’s Director Steffni Ringer and four other team members were apprised of the project in details. The Bank on its part evinced keen interest in the project and hinted positively of extending the Rs 3800 crore loan. The German Bank team focused its attention more on assessing the number of persons to be displaced by the project and the land presently available with Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation. A speedy loan is generally depends on these two aspects. At present, 77 percent of land necessary for Metro Rail project is available with the Corporation.

The number of persons to be displaced by the project is almost negligible. Moreover, under the first phase of the project, work on airport line is being done speedily. Considering all these positive factors, there seems no reason for making available the necessary loan for Metro Rail project, stated the NMRC officials.

The German Bank KFW is likely to announce its decision on extending loan to Nagpur Metro Rail project on Wednesday (Oct 14). The massive loan, if extended, could put the project on fast track.
