This pilot project with a cost of Rs 800 crore aims to let passengers use India’s first driverless pods. Their pods will be suspended on ropeway and will initially cover a stretch of 12.3 km. The areas which will fall under this pilot project are Delhi-Haryana border to Badshapur via Rajiv Chowk in Delhi and IFFCO Chowk and Sohna Road in Gurgaon.

According to the transport Minister four initial tenders have been received for this project and they intend to invite financial bids to implement this project soon.

Mr Gadkari said that this pilot project will be implemented under NHAI (National Highways Authority of India). He said that he had a recent meeting with the Urban Development Minister and in the meeting, there was a discussion on whether to implemented this project under Tramways Act or the NHAI Act. It was eventually decided that the pilot project will be executed under NHAI act.

Transport Ministry officials have said that initially there will be 13 stations. The official further added that four global companies have been successful for the technical bids. This includes a company from London which has done work in this context in the UK’s busiest airport Heathrow. One company each from US and UAE have also been successful for the bids. A Polish company has also qualified in the technical bids.

The Metrino is considered to be extremely environment-friendly as it will run on electricity. The pods will be suspended 5-10 meters above the ground.

The Prime Minister of India and the Union Cabinet was given a presentation of this ambitious project a few months ago.

The Metrinos are also considered cost effective as compared to the Metros. According to news reports, the capital cost of a Metrino per Km is 50 crore whereas the Metros cost much higher at 250 crores per km.

In the coming times, it will be interesting to see how the citizens of the metro respond to this latest form of transport and if this new project by the government to decongest the capital roads will be successful.

Metrino Project | Govt. may implement Delhi-Manesar Driverless Pod Taxis project soon

New Delhi: The government will soon implement the ambitious Personal Rapid Transit or Metrino project in the National Capital Region, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Sunday.

The pilot project, which will cost Rs. 800 crore, will let passengers use India’s first driverless pods – suspended on a ropeway – on a 12.3-km stretch from the Delhi-Haryana border to Badshapur via Rajiv Chowk in Delhi and IFFCO chowk and Sohna Road in Gurgaon.

Mr Gadkari said that four initial tenders have been received and it will soon invite financial bids for the implementation of the project.

“We are going to implement the Rs. 800-crore pilot project under NHAI (National Highways Authority of India). I had a meeting with Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu and it was finally decided that we can execute it under the NHAI Act. Previously, it was being explored whether to do it under the Tramways Act or the NHAI Act,” the minister added.

A ministry official said there will be 13 stations on the stretch and five people can travel in one pod,

“Four global companies – one from London which has done work in this regard at the Heathrow airport, one from the UAE, one from the US and one from Poland have qualified in initial technical bids. Once the road transport and highways ministry approves it, we will float financial bids,” an official said.

“Initially, we are planning 1,100 pods and the system will be such that if one has to travel from station 1 to 12th, on a specific command that particular pod would reach the 12th station without any halt,” the official explained.

The complete public transport project for travel in driver-less pods suspended on a ropeway in NCR wil cost Rs. 4,000 crore.

The first phase plans connecting the 70-km stretch from Dhaula Kuan in Delhi to Manesar in Haryana to decongest NCR and ease traffic.

The ropeway system runs on electricity, and driverless pods come down at designated stations, thus shifting the traffic burden from the already congested roads.

Under the project, fully automatic, driverless small pods travel independently suspended over an overhead network which is usually 5-10 meters above the ground.

A few months ago, a presentation on the project was made before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet.

Mr Gadkari has said the massive work is under way to reform the face of the highway sector and the pilot project will be one such step in that direction.

Delhi Metro | DMRC needs 916 new coaches to tackle overcrowding in metro trains

New Delhi: In a move that may significantly reduce crowding in trains, the Metro has approached the government making a case for procurement of 916 coaches to tackle the 17.5% annual growth in ridership recorded over the past five years.

Says the detailed project report by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, “There is a persistent demand from all quarters, including the Supreme Court, that DMRC shall endeavour to run trains with best possible frequency to meet the needs of the city’s public transport.”

Given that Delhi Metro runs 1,396 coaches in its system, another 916 would mean a 65% increase in coaches.

In terms of trains, the proposal has sought 102 new ones to add to the existing network of 227. It cites “extreme overcrowding” for the need to add to the existing rolling stock, or coaches. According to the Delhi Metro, the augmentation is planned to be taken up from April 2017 to March 2021, after the approvals from the Delhi government and the Centre. The procurement is expected to cost Rs 13,284 crore, at 2016 prices.

At present, Delhi Metro operates on six corridors. Two more corridors will be added in phase III, for which the Delhi Metro has already placed an order of 486 coaches. However, the increasing ridership on the network has meant that the number of trains in the system is not enough to cater to the crowds.

In the past five years, 17.5% additional commuters have been added to the ridership, each year.At present, the daily average ridership of the network is around 28 lakh, though it recently touched 32 lakh on a hectic day .

The more populated corridors are line 34 (Dwarka sector 21 to NoidaVaishali) and line 2 (Sa maypur Badli to HUDA City Centre).

The average ridership is 10,75,586 on line 34 and 10,07,539 on line 2. The other lines clock between 40,018 for the Airport Express line to 3,74,516 for line 1, which is the Rithala to Dilshad Garden line.

Line 6 (ITO to Escorts Mujesar) recently saw a spike in ridership due to the opening of the corridor till Faridabad and extension of the line from Central Secretariat to ITO.
The addition of the 916 coaches, some of which will be used to convert the six or four coach trains into eight or six coach ones, will have an impact on the headway (the distance between two trains running on the same line, which roughly translates to train frequency), the DPR says.

According to figures in the DPR, the increase in coaches will minimise the headway , shaving away an entire minute on lines where the frequency is already quite high.

The validity of the 10 Trip Card will be for 15 days and the facility will be applicable on trial for three months. This facility will be economical and also help save time for the occasional commuters of the Airport Express Line.

The Trip Cards of Airport Express Line are economical for commuters as they provide cheaper travel in the range of 10% to 55% depending on the number of stations travelled vis a vis those who use single journey token for their travel. Rs. 9/-, Rs. 12/- with 30 trip card and Rs. 15 with 10 trip card.

This is one of the many measures that the Delhi Metro has taken in recent times to facilitate its passengers on the Airport Express Line. Recently, check in facility was introduced at both New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium Metro station for Air India and Jet Airways bound passengers. Ticket counters were also opened by Air India at these two stations. The frequency of the trains on this line was also increased to 10 minutes throughout the peak hours i.e. 08:00 AM to 08:00 PM.
