Delhi Meerut RRTS: Modipuram Depot Nearing Completion

Construction work for the second Namo Bharat depot is progressing rapidly in Modipuram, Meerut. This facility is being established near the University of Agriculture and Technology campus to facilitate operations along the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor.

Alongside the depot, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is also developing a dedicated Meerut Metro station, which is expected to improve connectivity for adjacent areas, including Pawli Khas, Daurala, Sakauti, and Powersa village. A Depot Control Centre (DCC) is also planned for the stations. The DCC will be responsible for overseeing operational control and train movements within the designated space of the depot premises.

Currently, Namo Bharat trains are being operated and maintained from an existing operational depot located in Duhai, Ghaziabad. As operations expand throughout the entire corridor, the necessity for an additional depot for ongoing operations and maintenance becomes increasingly critical. To address this requirement, another depot is being constructed in Modipuram.

A train workshop will also be established at the Modipuram depot, where maintenance for both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro trains will be conducted. Furthermore, a 1.2 km-long test track will also be constructed on-site to facilitate comprehensive train testing.

Supporting infrastructure, including a Depot Scrap Yard and crucial technical units such as the Inspection Workshop (IWS) and the permanent-way office for track maintenance, is also being constructed at this depot. The facility will comprise four inspection bay lines (IBL) and four workshop lines to enable thorough train checks and maintenance. It will also feature stabling lines with the capacity to accommodate 34 train sets of both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro.

An automatic coach washing plant will be set up for the external cleaning and washing of train sets at the Depot. Additionally, a heavy-cleaning shed is being established to allow for deep-cleaning and scheduled maintenance of the trains.

In a step forward towards promoting a sustainable and environmentally friendly transport system, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has successfully installed fast Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at the Guldhar and Duhai Namo Bharat Stations.

Each fast charging station is equipped with high-voltage charging units with a capacity of 50 kW, enabling accelerated charging for electric vehicles. These charging units can recharge four-wheelers to about 80% in just 30 minutes.

The charging points at both stations are designed to accommodate multiple types of electric vehicles. The Guldhar station is equipped to charge one vehicle at a time, whereas the Duhai station can charge two vehicles simultaneously. In addition to the new charging stations, the e-vehicle charging facility is also available at the Sahibabad Namo Bharat station.

Electric vehicle users can access these facilities through the “ElectreeFi” mobile application, which is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. The entire EV charging process is facilitated exclusively through the application. To utilise this service, users must register on the app, reserve an online slot for charging at the selected Namo Bharat station, and commence charging their electric vehicle within minutes. Furthermore, the application provides real-time monitoring of charging status and incorporates a secure digital payment option.
