Telangana Government to Take Over the Hyderabad Metro Phase 1

0
Hyderabad Metro

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): The Telangana government has formally agreed to take full control of Phase 1 of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, which can be seen as a setback for the world’s largest PPP in metro project. Under the agreement, the government will take on liabilities of around ₹13,000 crore and will pay Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T) a settlement of ₹2,000 crore.

This decision was finalized after discussions between Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and L&T Chairman and MD S.N. Subrahmanyan on 25 September.

Hyderabad Metro Phase 1, currently operated by L&T’s subsidiary L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Ltd., has been a persistent financial burden for the company. In its FY25 annual report, L&T reported a widened net loss of ₹626 crore from the project, alongside a 21% decline in operating and other income to ₹1,109 crore.

The increasing losses and limited government support led L&T to formally express its intent to withdraw from the venture. Under the new arrangement, the state will take over the debt and provide L&T with a one-time payout for its equity exit.

Although Chief Minister Reddy encouraged L&T to contribute to Phase 2 of the metro, the company declined to participate as an equity partner, citing concerns over financial structuring. L&T Chairman and MD S.N. Subrahmanyan also refrained from committing to any agreement on cost-sharing or revenue models.

With the finalisation of handover, the Telangana government is now positioned to secure central clearance for the next phase. However, the absence of a private partner could alter the financing and execution approach for Hyderabad Metro’s Phase 2.

The initial trial run was conducted on a 4.4 km section between Gaimukh and Vijay Garden, covering four stations. This section is part of the first phase of the project. The trial was flagged off by Maharashtra CM, Shri Devendra Fadnavis.

Lines 4 and 4A are being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Line 4 extends 35.2 km from Wadala to Kasarvadavali, and the development of this line is expected to cost ₹14,549 crore, while Line 4A is a 2.88 km extension from Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh, costing approximately ₹949 crore.

The alignment passes through several densely populated areas and is designed to integrate with existing and upcoming metro lines. There is a potential future interchange with the proposed Mumbai Metro Line 11, which would extend connectivity from Wadala to CSMT.

On this occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Shinde said that more than 172 years after the inauguration of the railway in Thane, the city is now being served by a modern metro system, which is a historic moment for Thane. He added that the planned 58-km elevated corridor, which could result from integration with Metro Line 11, will be the first of its kind in India and is expected to support traffic management in the region.

Pune Metro: ITD Cementation Secures Construction Work of Swargate – Katraj Extension

0
Pune Metro

Pune (Metro Rail News): ITD Cementation India Limited emerged as the lowest bidder for the civil construction works of the Pune Metro Purple Line’s southern extension, which stretches 5.46 km from Swargate to Katraj. The contract, awarded by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro or MMRCL), plays a major role in the expansion of Pune’s metro network. The contract was awarded under the Package P1A-UGC(R).

This underground section will feature twin tunnels along the alignment and include the development of five new underground stations. These stations will be strategically located at Market Yard (Gultekdi), Bibwewadi, Padmawati, Balaji Nagar, and Katraj, thereby enhancing connectivity to some of the city’s most densely populated and commercially active areas. This extension is expected to address growing commuter demand in the southern parts of Pune while easing traffic congestion along the busy Swargate–Katraj corridor.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) had invited bids for the Swargate to Katraj underground extension contract in October 2024. At the time of the tender announcement, the project design included three underground stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj. Following a detailed process of consultation with various stakeholders, including inputs from government authorities and the general public, the scope of the project was revised.

As part of this revision, two additional underground stations were incorporated at Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar. The inclusion of these new stations increased the overall estimated cost of the project to ₹3,637 crore. However, despite this expansion in scope, the construction timeline for the project has remained unchanged, with the contract duration fixed at 42 months.

The bidding process advanced further in July 2025, when Maha-Metro opened the technical bids for evaluation. A total of six firms submitted their proposals for the contract. The technical evaluation process was carried out meticulously, and the results were finalised on 17 September. The outcome confirmed that all six participating bidders successfully qualified.

Financial Bids of Technically Qualified Bidders

Brief Scope: Design and construction of underground stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj (Stage I), as well as Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar (Stage II), along with associated tunnelling work at the North South Corridor of the Pune Metro Rail Project.

The Swargate to Katraj stretch is planned to operate as a continuation of Phase 1, linking directly with the 3.3 km underground section between District Court and Swargate.

Undersea Tunnel breakthrough- Bullet Train Project

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail (MAHSR) corridor reached a milestone on 20 September with the completion of a 4.88 km undersea tunnel section connecting Ghansoli and Shilphata in Maharashtra. This is part of a planned 21 km tunnel between the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai and Shilphata.

Historic Milestone Major Tunnel breakthrough achieved in Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project 2

Railway officials reported that the excavation of the undersea tunnel beneath the Mumbai-Thane Creek for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train was carried out simultaneously from the Ghansoli and Shilphata sides. The teams faced challenging underwater conditions, including varying soil layers and confined spaces, which required careful planning and execution. The breakthrough was achieved when the two tunnel sections successfully met, signifying the completion of the 4.8 km stretch.

On this achievement, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “This is an important milestone for the project as we construct India’s first undersea tunnel, connecting Mumbai and Thane through this challenging creek.

https://twitter.com/AshwiniVaishnaw/status/1969331297479983462

In addition to this, Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw met a high-level Japanese delegation to review the progress of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project on 19 September. During the discussions, officials explored the introduction of Japan’s E10 Shinkansen. Japan has agreed to provide this advanced train system to India. The Minister also clarified that the bullet train corridor and Vande Bharat trains operate on separate platforms, and the Shinkansen trains will exclusively run on the newly constructed bullet train corridor.

Historic Milestone Major Tunnel breakthrough achieved in Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project 4

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor is designed to cut travel time between the two cities to just 2 hours and 7 minutes. Beyond faster travel, the project will enhance connectivity between major commercial hubs, promoting economic integration and facilitating knowledge transfer. The first section of the project, between Surat and Bilimora, is expected to be operational in 2027.
